Sid Caesar - "This is Your Story" with Carl Reiner and Howard Morris (Full Sketch)

- [From "Kovacs Corner" on UA-cam.com] - Before video tape, when a live prime time television series went on mid year hiatus, the networks would broadcast "summer replacements". During the year 1957, "The Ernie Kovacs Show" was the summer replacement program for "Caesar's Hour". Earlier known as "Your Show of Shows", it starred the legendary TV comedian Sid Caesar, with co-stars Carl Reiner and the late Howard Morris. With a writing staff that included among others Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Danny Simon and Mel Tolkin, it was one of the premier comedy shows of it's time. This particular sketch satirizes one of the most popular programs of it's day "This is Your Life" which starred Ralph Edwards and it is, in my opinion, one of the funniest comedy sketches ever performed on television. Howard Morris' over-the-top performance as "Uncle Goopy" put an audience in stitches 50 years ago and he can do it again with equal ease today! After Kovacs' untimely death, Sid was called upon by director Stanley Kramer to replace Ernie in the role of "Melville Crump" in the1963 film "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World".

This is -- without question -- positively, absolutely one of the funniest 10 minutes ever broadcast on television.
Denny I was perhaps 5 when this show was broadcast. The first 3 minutes I was roaring.
I STILL !! laugh beyond control when I watch this 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
And, a side of Ernest T. Bass!
When Sid jumps up and desperately tries to escape the show was a spur-of-the-moment improv by Caesar that nobody was expecting. One of the funniest sketches in TV history.
OMG, you're kidding! That makes this even funnier which I didn't know was possible! Thanks for this comment. 💙
@@mortalclown3812 It's absolutely TRUE according to a recent Mel Brooks memoir.
@@mortalclown3812 Then the ushers were on their toes, able to handle a true spontaneous moments like this...
And the entire thing was LIVE. Genius and eternally hilarious. Howard Morris is priceless.
Sid Caesar and Howard Morris were a riot together. Perfect timing all around.
This single sketch alone is responsible for so many of today's comedians, Conan O'Brian and Billy Crystal amongst others. Howard T. Morris was so brilliant at the art of improvising. He was classically trained but his true gift was making people forget there problems for a short while and making them just feel good from laughter. Howard T. Morris R.I.P. and thanks for all the laughs.
It still made me laugh just as hard as it did when I saw this sketch fresh the night it aired. I'm 77 years old and it brought back great memories for me.
what minute does it become funny?
@@mrh3894 When Al Duncey tries to escape, that ignites the non stop laughter !!!
Now THAT'S comedy!! R.I.P.Mr. Caesar - no-one comes close to your greatness in today's world.
all hail the great caesar
As soon as I heard Carl Reiner has passed, I had to come watch this sketch again. Comedy gold even 63 years later. RIP Mr Reiner. Thanks for all the laughs over the years.
Same. One of the greatest sketches I've ever seen.
Me too. I also had to watch "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" from the Dick VanDyke show.
Can you imagine even being in that writers' room? LMAO!! I just had to watch this epi - and it literally made me..LOL!! Rest In Peace and Laughter, Mr. Reiner et al.
Redlinesixtynine This is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I laugh every time-truly laugh. What a treasure to have this on film!
@Redlinesixtynine Ditto here! One of the funniest comedy sketches ever.
My Uncle Howie Morris. Always so nice, and funny to be around. He did the cartoon voices of Jughead, Adam Ant, and the ground hog in the Disney Winney The Poo..
Even today the words "Uncle Goopy" will send my 85 year old mother and father into hysterics
This sketch stood the test of time. Never gets old, pure genius! 👍🤣
You know, in the hands of less talented men, this sketch could have gone so wrong. But the timing was masterful and Carl Reiner - the perfect straight-man.

I was a young boy when my parents & grandparents would gather around the TV to watch “Your Show of Shows” on Sunday nights right after the Ed Sullivan Show. These were clean, pure comic genius’ led by Sid Caesar with Carl Reiner, Imogene Coca, Howie Morris, Louie Nye & Nanette Fabray making us laugh until we cried. No cursing, no self deprecating or calling people out. Sid hired the best comedy writers like Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil & Danny Simon, Mel Tolkien, Larry Gelbert & eventually Woody Allen. The cream of the crop in comedy. Two days ago we lost Carl who lived to be 98 years old. The end of a classic era in TV comedy. To this day, there’s no comedy show or movie that comes close to what they did to entertain us. RIP to all these comics that made us laugh until our bellies hurt.....you’re all truly missed.
Your show of shows was on Saturday night on NBC. The Saturday lineup was The Jack Carter Show from 8-9, Your Show of Shows from 9-10:30 and Your Hit Parade from 10:30-11. I remember that lineup as if it was yesterday.
Madeline Pearl I stand corrected. It was Saturday night. I was only 6 years old at the time......
@@dolphe.chiarino6142 No problem I was 7 years old in 1950 when my family bought our first TV set and Your Show of Shows premiered that year. I am a tv junkie and I can remember sitting in front of the set watching test patters before Howdy Doody came on at 5:30 PM. Hey, kids, what time is it? Howdy Doody time(LOL)
@@madelinepearl7473 Oh yeah, I remember the Indian test patterns, Pinky Lee, Kukla, Fran & Ollie, Agricultural Farmer at 6am, Sheri Lewis & Lambchop, Andy's Gang, Sky King, Amon n Andy & the National Anthem around midnight when TV went off the air. Wow, how the world has changed & 70 years of my life has passed so quickly. Enjoy your 4th!
From what I understand this clip was taken from Caesars Hour.... the follow up to Your Show of Shows. This ran from 1954 to 1957.
Sid Caesar and Ernie Kovacs were my favorites. Two greats gone. RIP Sid.
I laughed just as much watching this today as I did when I saw it live, in the 50s.
Bless you and hope you're doing fine, lady
Yes, Faith, I'm with you!
We've lost a comedic giant!! Thanks for the laughter!!
R.I.P. Sid,thanks for the laughs.
First time I ever saw this sketch. My mother and I would watch 'This is Your Life' every week so I could really appreciate this sketch. I laughed so hard that I cried. Pure genius.
Yes, I well remember Ralph Edwards' "This Is Your Life" and seeing Sid's parody on live TV. Just brilliant!
One of the features of Sid Caesar's performances was the burning intensity of the man. Everything he did came from somewhere real, and sometimes a sense of desperation. When you can bring those qualities to a comedy sketch and make people laugh till they cry, you've got something precious. You could almost say, sacred.
Dear Town Hall, Thanks for your post. Your word "sacred" is perfect. Humor is so important. More so now than ever, as we endure such harsh realities - disgusting racism, pandemic spread, and shortage of Nutella. (I'm a stand-up myself. See UA-cam)
One of the most hilarious bits ever made with Sid Caesar. Farewell, Sid.
RIP Carl. Genius straight man to genius Sid Caesar's beautiful chaos.
This is probably the funniest ten minutes in television history, and it happened almost at the outset. This sketch served as the endpiece for the 1973 theatrical compilation "Ten from Your Show of Shows," which was first broadcast on TV several years later. It included other classic sketches such as "The Clock" and "The German General." In April 1967, the four joined together for what was essentially a final installment of Your Show of Shows. Since the title was owned by NBC and the special was on CBS, they had to call it the "The Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, Howard Morris Special." It won two Emmys and was nominated for a third. Thanks, Sid. Thanks, Carl. Thanks, Imogene. Thanks, Howie.
I saw ten from your show of shows when it came out in 73. I never knew I could laugh that hard. Tears. People in the theatre must have thought I was crazy. They were right
There's a story that "Monty Python's" John Cleese thought this was so funny that he was afraid he would damage himself laughing! Thanks for posting this immortal skit!
Classic slapstick comedy! Laughed so hard it hurt! Sid and Howard, not to mention Carl were legends. So glad that we have You tube in order to see all this talent in action!
Agree this had to be one of the funniest, if not THE funniest, sketch Caesar & Co. ever performed. R.I.P. Mr. Caesar.
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SKETCHES I'VE EVER SEEN....
What made it so funny is that normally the person that was the subject of the original "This is your life" show was always surprised but calmly came up onto the stage and excepted everyone from his past in a dignified manor.
@@rubyhunternc OMG!!! Now u r gonna tell us why it was funny to us!
This is the skit that I always remembered - I saw it live during the 1950's and still thought about it 40 years later. Truly a gem.
without a doubt.....this skit was the ultimate. thats always been my opinion, and when i hear mel brooks say the same thing, i went crazy.....god bless howie morris, and may god bless sid ceasar.....jim
Thank you King of Saturday Night for making me laugh so much. Rest in peace.
The funniest skit of all time. Live and in one take. SNL looks pathetic next to this stuff. Sid Caesar and his crew (Howie Morris, Carl Reiner, Imogene Coca) and his writing staff (Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart, Woody Allen) were the best comedy team ever assembled. I've seen this about 20 times, and it's still great. Thanks!
Probably one of Caesar's Best sketches...
R.I.P Sid Caesar
RIP, a legend in every sense of the word!!
When he fights off the ushers just makes me helpless with laughter! And Carl Reiner never stops commenting during that whole sequence. Hilarious! And Uncle Goopy.
Uncle Gopee! I saw this when I was a very small boy. It still works! Comedy that's funny..not mean! Thank you so much guys...
Sid Caesar -- one of the all-time funny human beings!
Comedy genius.....God Bless Sid Caesar and all the wonderful, CLEAN, humor he gave to the world. Never be another one like him. Thanks for the memories Sid. I like to think you and Imogene are laughing together again.
Uncle Goopy!!! I saw this sketch many years ago the first time I saw "Ten From Your Show of Shows" and fell madly in love with Sid Caesar and Carl Reiner! Is there such a thing as a perfect sketch? Yes - here it is. Thanks for these. Sid was the most gifted man ever to appear on television.
A classic. My dad was crazy about ‘Your Show of Shows’. Howard Morris was a comedy genius as was Sid Caesar. 😂
I had to edit this because I’ve never laughed so hard in my whole life oh my God hilarious old TV man oh my god ...I’m tears🤣
OMG--I looked up Howard Morris and Wikipedia said this was his fave sketch and behold...here it is. YT is a miracle--thanks for posting. Catch Howard as Earnest T Bass on The Andy Griffith Show--incredible stuff.
Exactly the same!
Unlike many classic shows, "Your Show of Shows" was never placed in rerun. I'd heard about it and seen some footage in documentaries but have rarely seen any skits. This was my first real time and I've been laughing for the past 20 minutes. This is unreal.
I saw this when it was included in the compilation at a movie theater when I was in my 20's and laughed until I cried! This sketch is timeless and I love 'Uncle Goopy'! LOL!
Great Humor is timeless!
The first time I saw this sketch many decades ago, I literally rolled on the floor laughing. One of the most hilarious bits of television ever! Brilliant all round. Carl Reiner was a genius. RIP to an old friend via the airwaves.
Thank you SO much, Kovacs Corner.
So stinkin' heckin' hilairous, thery are!
Ahhhh, such a sad day today - R.I.P., beautiful, irreplaceable Sid Caesar. But a long, GOOD (TRULY) life.
He gave us SO much.

Sid Caesar and Imogene Coco ? What a incredible duo in the early 1950 's with Carl Reiner. They were the very best to witness if you old enough to see them when television was less than 10 years old. God Bless them.

Absolute comedy gold. Sid Caesar will always be one of the all time great comedians. R.I.P
Hysterical!
RIP Sid. You have lightened my spirits more times than I can count!
One of the greatest performer/audience interactions ever...
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sid Caesar...he's brilliant! As are Carl and Howard and the others.... I can watch this over and over and over again and still be laughing out loud!
One of my favorites ❤️ RIP Mr. Reiner
Bless you Sid, and thank you for a great childhood of laughs.
I'm dyin'!!!!!!
This has got to be one of the funniest 10 minutes of TV EVER.. sure wish they still made great shows like this instead of the garbage on TV today.
I remember watching this live at the time. Never missed the shows. The Carol Burnett sketches almost came close.
I can still remember watching this episode with my father. He would laugh so much. This was classic comedy.
I remember seeing these shows in the mirror that hung over the dresser in our shotgun apartment ... of course it was flip flopped as far as reading the words in the commercials .... but the shows were so funny that I had to be very quiet and laugh in my pillow so that I wouldn't get caught staying up late and watching The Show of SHows ... RIP Sid ... your legacy lives on .... God Bless !
....often considered quite possibly the funniest sketch ever broadcast, and I can see why...
Even though I am only 46 years of age you gave me so much to laugh at. This is one of my favorite sketches. God speed Sid Caesar god speed.
Now that's comedy! Cracked me up almost non-stop. Crazy funny. Thank you!
I haven't laughed so hard at something in a long time! Carl Reiner Sid Ceaser, and Howard Morris were hysterical!
Uncle Goopy!!! That's the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV!!!!!
Ernest T. Bass from Mayberry
Haven't seen much, eh?
Great classic comedy sketch
Light years ahead of their time -simply hilarious
They are leaving us. It is a good thing they will leave us the laughter forever.
That has to be the best thing I've read about Sid Caesar since his passing-Thank You!!
This is the most outrageously funny skit I've ever seen in my life! Should have millions of views.
You bet! I love Sid Caesar! Howard Morris, Carl Reiner, Imogene Coca, Nanette Fabray...they were all FANTASTIC!!
This Skit is The MOST HILARIOUS Comedy Bit I Have Ever Seen!!!!! Had to keep pausing it coz I was laughing so much,...it hurt my side!!!!
Nothing but good memories. Just great!
Uncle Goopy was Howard Morris......also known as Earnest T Bass
Downright Hilarious!!!!! Laughed until tears ran down my face
I thought Conan O'Brien was exaggerating by saying this video was hilarious but I came to see it anyway. By the 2nd minute I was cracking up. This is really hilarious.
This was LIVE too! It amazes me they could pull this stuff off. I doubt anyone would have the grit and gravel to attempt it today.
TheUncaJoe
I know.
This was done LIVE! One shot!
One of the single funniest things I have even seen from a television show.
Sid Caesar was out of this world funny. Special kudos to Carl Reiner (the MC) and Howie Morris (Uncle Goofy) who were drop dead hilarious as well.
And let's not forget the fabulous writers.
"Your Show of Shows" (Saturday Nights, NBC 1950-1954) with Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner and Howard Morris.
What a show!

Happy 90th Birthday to the greatest comic talent in TV history. Hail Caesar!!!
This has to be among the top 10 funniest sketches of all time 😂😂🤣🤣
THANK GOD FOR THE GREAT CAESAR
Freaking hilarious!!!! RIP Sid Ceasar.
Arguably the funniest 10 minutes in television history.
RIP Sid Caesar. You were a funny, funny man sir! A true legend. Who could forget you in "Your Show of Shows" with Imogene Coca or in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" with Spencer Tracy, and of course Couch Calhoun in Grease. You will be missed!
Happy 90th Birthday Sid Caesar!!!!!
A perfect parody of this is your life....great job sid! d
This sketch had the longest and loudest unprompted outburst of laughter from an audience in comedy history.
Sid is a comic genius!!! Carl Reiner is a great straight man! Howard Morris was a hilarious actor! That's why I have boughten many Sid Caesar's DVD's! I fell in love with Sid Caesar in 1963 at a Drive Inn movie watching "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World! A five year old! He is the best comic in the business!
Absolutely brilliant.
This is right up there with who's on first. Just a piece of comedy genius
"(When) asked by the Archive of American Television how he'd (Sid Caesar) like to be remembered, he responded with six words: 'I brought laughter to the world'."
If you're not familiar with the great comedic talent of Sid Caesar other than the character of Coach Calhoun in "Grease", then I implore you to watch this sketch that combines the talented writing and acting of Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Howie Morris, and Imogene Coca.
You, my dear sir, did bring laughter into the world, and will continue to do so as your legacy lives on through the likes of social media such as this.
I've heard about this clip for years. It exceeded my expectations. This was hilarious.
I've seen this at least a hundred times in my lifetime and I still wet my pants, laughing! It's hysterically funny!
Good comedy NEVER gets old, NEVER goes out of style!
The funniest ten minutes in the history of the human race.
This is a true comedy masterpiece.... RIP Carl Reiner Sid Caesar,. Howard Morris and Louis Nye
This is a peak of comedy and stands comparison with anything from any period in television history, but I have to say, you just don't hear audiences laugh like this anymore.
dang this guy was hilaarious
This was live, the same as Saturday Night Live, except it's actually funny.
This is so silly but it had me cracking up. Love Sid Caesar
I have never laughed so hard in my life.
A masterpiece!
Brilliant and clean comedy. Terrific ensemble cast too. The kindly fireman was Louis Nye. RIP to a funny actor, Hail Caesar!!!!!!!
Henry -thank you,I didn't recognize Louis Nye,another great(and underrated)comedian!!You're right-they proved that it was possible to be funny without being vulgar! Good to know that someone else appreciates the absolute classics!!
I totally agree with you!! The kindly fireman in the skit looked somewhat familiar and the name Louis Nye came to mind. Thanks for the confirmation. I watched this show as a kid in the '50s. If memory serves, The Show Of Shows was originally a 60 minute show which was later lengthened to 90 minutes.. As a kid, I was disappointed to hear that but the more I watched the more I came to appreciate the humor. I suppose the content was beyond my early youth and I matured. Thanks to UA-cam, I can recapture those great moments. Regards.
Rehdman6444 Did you notice that there was an actual audience member near where Sid Caesar was sitting trying to hide his face,as if he didn't want his boss, wife, etc.to know he was there that evening!Thank you for your very nice reply,Rehdman 6444!
willow11st I think that was Ernie Kovacs.

Uncle Goofy! OMG I just laughed to the point of tears through that whole thing.
Uncle Goopy
Howard Morris later went on to a steady role in the Andy Griffith Show, one of the funniest men in television history.
I wish that more writers were crazy like this when sketches are written.
Wonderful combination of brilliant minds. A wonderful time in television. And I only recently learned that The Alan Brady Show, the one Rob Petrie wrote for on The Dick Van Dyke Show, was in fact based on Reiner's experiences on Sid Caesar's show. Same with Mel Brooks and My Favorite Year.
This is the all time best. Nothing will ever top this!
Talking to a really funny younger actor who had never heard of Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Show". Live TV in the 50's. Brilliant. Maybe TV Land could play some re-runs. On the shoulders of giants.
