@DavidBennettPiano Dear David, I have a question regarding Ice Five (Dorian). I understand that you wanted to highlight the difference between the natural minor and dorian scale, but isn't interpreting the song in the 'parent key' of Bb really confusing? If we see it as being in F (so G dorian) we would simply have a ii - iii and have no need to raise the b5 of the vii chord. We would also have one accidental less in the key signature. Why did you interpret it this way?
I’d love to see you tackle their album “Changes”. The concept of the album being that they modulate between 2 different key centres with each chord change.

You gotta talk about changes. The entire concept is that each chord change changes the key the song is in, alternating between D and F# major (hence the title). While most of the songs just vamp between two chord the entire time, I still think it's an interesting thing to go into detail about
The most fantastic thing about KG&LW is that, despite their ginormous output and despite their ability to go full-on theoretical with albums like this (Or Microtonal Banana or Polygondwanaland), their songs are still great to listen to, earworms even, and they still convey messages. Other interesting thing are the microtonal albums trilogy, very interesting musically. But even more interesting than the music theory themed albums, are their concept driven releases, each album is unique trying something new.
This is awesome - so cool that the band deliberately decided to do a whole album based on modes! By the way, I would love to see you do a video about borrowed chords/ modal modulation and how they can be used for songwriting purposes to convey a certain emotions when writing. I’ve never understood the “Nobody plays in Locrian” thing. I did it, it was nothing, like any mode. You tell the bass player to play B-roots and everybody else plays in C-Major and occasionally just pretend that B is the tonic. 😊
I play in Locrian on harmonicas sometimes, which is like playing in Mixolydian but without resolving on what would be the tonic of Mixolydian. I usually improvise in Locrian for a bit before going back to Mixolydian.
@@reillywalker195 I think it's just that bV that upsets people. When you can't go to the natural V to lead back to the tonic (not that you always should be now you can't) you have to be creative and trust that your audience is hip and willing to go with you.
11:20 I had the same idea for a locrian song, except I also added an 11th to the chord. So my song had a Bm7add11(no5) as the tonic chord, ocassionally going to Em7,11(no5) and Am7,11(no5). That created a stable enough, but somewhat unsettling harmony.

Disclaimer: you may not like the vocals, but there are orchestral covers for technical death metal.
Question: Why instead of using g min/Bflat maj key signatures with a raised E to an E natural, we don't use F major key signature? G dorian is the second mode of the F maj/ionian so its more reasonable and we don't have to raise anything p.s. its the same with D phrygian...using B flat maj key sig. is better than F maj key sig. , innit?
@DavidBennettPiano Dear David, I have a question regarding Ice Five (Dorian). Well, this could lead to an interesting concept album series. Next album, the modes of the harmonic minor scale, next the modes of the double harmonic major scale, then melodic minor, and finally harmonic major. That's your next 4 albums sorted KG. You're welcome 😀
I came here searching for "why hasn't David Bennett discussed King Gizzard" and wasn't disappointed... he managed to sneak this in hours before I went after him
Locrian is one of those scales that exist in theory but not in reality. Doing Am7(omit5) is still Am7, the 5 is actually heard through the harmonics. The use of the Eb here is obviously ornamental. I would try to use an Eb chord maybe...
I love this band. I'm not too knowledgeable about music theory (getting more knowledgeable thanks to David Bennet!), but I appreciate King Gizz giving us a good sounding example of each mode. I get people often aren't into this, calling it boring or uninteresting, but I am the exact opposite, I find this album captivating and interesting. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of modern radio pop music. I still like The Beatles, but they're from the 60s, not really modern.
Hi David, I was wondering if you like Elliott Smith and could feature some of his songs on the channel. He uses a lot of interesting chords progressions and key changes.
So I have seen this before and I am always a bit perplexed by this: so whenever you have a non-Ionian or non-Aeolian scale/mode you still seem to have the same fixed accidentals as the Ionian or Aeolian counterpart. So the G dorian example has two flats and the D phrgian has one flat whereas whenever I play things notated and in these modes a G dorian would have only one flat and D phrygian would have two flats. Now interestingly, the F lydian example had no accidental but D mixolydian has two sharps instead of one and A locrian has no accidentals instead of two flats. Although I see what they did there by omitting the 5 in that A(di)m chord. :) So what gives? For me, the natural thing would be to indicate G mixolydian with no accidentals, C# phrygian with 3 sharps, C dorian with two flats etc. So again, what gives?
@@kierenmoore3236It did come off as sus, yes. :) But even so, I mean, if I wanted to indicate something to be in C Locrian I would put 5 flats there and not 3 flats and mark every single D flat and G flat.
@@weepingscorpion8739 It’s more than sus, though. The b5 is literally the defining/signature scale degree of Locrian. It would be like buying a “jam donut”, and finding out it’s a plain donut with a tiny dot of jam inside it, lol. I mean, technically, perhaps … but you’d feel cheated. We wouldn’t all be talking about how clever the donut manufacturer was, would we … lol
About the Locrian mode - did they just "cheat" by leaving the flat5 out? I think they did a bit. Also you talk about the one needs to be "resolved or resolving chord". No it does not. In my mind, music does not need to resolve into anything. It is ok if it resolves, but it doesn't have to. Or am I just too dumb to understand this "claim"?
The fact is that they are just an ok band, a couple ok albums, the rest is every uninspiring music, but their fanboys are totally unbearable that they make me dislike the band altogether. But apart from that, I don’t think they have any songwriting gifts at all
@@Tityretupatulae ah yes the fanboys like me who've made you come here and leave all these comments! If only they hadn't been so damn annoying, then you wouldn't have had to click on this video and leave 10 comments
@@Tityretupatulae might i ask which albums specifically you thought were "ok"? Also, what specifically do you dislike about their songwriting? Genuinely curious
Only downside I have with this is that the words in the title don't match the titles of the songs in their modes. Ice is Ionian, but then the song Ice V is not the ionian song and instead it's Mycelium, which would match more logically with Mushrooms being Myxolydian.
The example done in Phrygian - could it be compared to Dwight Yoakam's Long White Cadillac in the outro instrumental but not necessarily in Phrygian, which incidentally, is Pete Anderson's best work ¿`_
No, musicians know very well what good songwriting is. This isn’t unfortunately. This is music for hipsters and for publications like pitchfork that need to make money promoting unlistenable music to pretend to be hip and fresh and relevant

25 albums 25 albums
i kind of don't want to start listing starting points because i will never stop. i'll just say, do NOT discount their live work - they are a phenomenal performing band
Welcome.
@@iPig to what? He could hate them.
@@adino20 What are you on about brother?
Ain't no way! If David covers Necrophagist's "Fermented Offal Discharge" or Suicmez's use of harmonic minor or diminished scales I will die a happy man.
Necrophagist, Decapitated and Rimmsky-Korsakov would make awesome topics for applying diminished scales in music.
Disclaimer: you may not like the vocals, but there are orchestral covers for technical death metal.
Great video!
Oh yeahhh, finally a whole King Gizzard video by my favourite music youtuber
Question:
Why instead of using g min/Bflat maj key signatures with a raised E to an E natural, we don't use F major key signature?
G dorian is the second mode of the F maj/ionian so its more reasonable and we don't have to raise anything
p.s. its the same with D phrygian...using B flat maj key sig. is better than F maj key sig. , innit?
One of my favorite albums ever
@DavidBennettPiano
Dear David, I have a question regarding Ice Five (Dorian).
Oh look two of my favorite things
I LOVE THIS BAND
BRO I GOT AN AD FROM YOU ON YOUR OWN VIDEO YOURE MAKING IT IN LIFE MAN❤
Great video Mr Piano!
Loved this! Please do Ginger Toot 🙏
Well, this could lead to an interesting concept album series. Next album, the modes of the harmonic minor scale, next the modes of the double harmonic major scale, then melodic minor, and finally harmonic major. That's your next 4 albums sorted KG. You're welcome 😀
Those albums would release before your next birthday most likely as well. xD
I came here searching for "why hasn't David Bennett discussed King Gizzard" and wasn't disappointed... he managed to sneak this in hours before I went after him
Didn’t expect David to talk about king gizzard
YESSSSSSS!!!!!! Favorite album, favorite band, favorite music UA-camr
Yes!!! Please do more vids on Gizz!
your ass was like "even locrian" as if nobody was expecting an album called "ice death planets lungs mushrooms and lava" to use locrian
Locrian is one of those scales that exist in theory but not in reality.
Doing Am7(omit5) is still Am7, the 5 is actually heard through the harmonics.
The use of the Eb here is obviously ornamental.
I would try to use an Eb chord maybe...
So you know of any songs that use the whole chord?
I love this band. I'm not too knowledgeable about music theory (getting more knowledgeable thanks to David Bennet!), but I appreciate King Gizz giving us a good sounding example of each mode. I get people often aren't into this, calling it boring or uninteresting, but I am the exact opposite, I find this album captivating and interesting. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of modern radio pop music. I still like The Beatles, but they're from the 60s, not really modern.
Never heard of this band but I will be checking them out 😊
Into the rabbit hole you go
@@siebenedrissg wooooo! 🤘🏻
Woooos are an important part of the experience.
Finally a video that doesn't mention The Beatles :)
Hi David, I was wondering if you like Elliott Smith and could feature some of his songs on the channel. He uses a lot of interesting chords progressions and key changes.
agreed
NICE to know you like Aussie music Dave! \m/
STUDEER MUZIEK
Awesome video on one of my favourite bands!
Please do some kind of analysis on Ali Akbar Khan.
Time they come out with some new stuff though...
Please, no.
Give them a few months, damn, lol
Your metaphorical descriptions of the sound of modes are imaginative and very helpful.
Omitting the 5 and calling it Locrian is total BS. lol
@@kierenmoore3236 I know. I was ... uhm ... what ever the antonym of exaggerating is... on purpose :)
Does the key signature of the second song indicate C Dorian Rather than G?
About the Locrian mode - did they just "cheat" by leaving the flat5 out? I think they did a bit.
Also you talk about the one needs to be "resolved or resolving chord". No it does not. In my mind, music does not need to resolve into anything. It is ok if it resolves, but it doesn't have to. Or am I just too dumb to understand this "claim"?
always interesting to see people in comments sections hate on gizz just to hate on gizz. great vid btw.
So awesome video!!❤😊
was secretly hoping david would end the video with: "now here's a song that I wrote that uses all 7 modes" 😉
Love King Gizzard so much! This album is definitely one of their best.
The example done in Phrygian - could it be compared to Dwight Yoakam's Long White Cadillac in the outro instrumental but not necessarily in Phrygian, which incidentally, is Pete Anderson's best work ¿`_
Best band in the game, and in their prime right now. All hail King Gizz!!!
GIZZ VIDEO LETS GOOOOO
Very interesting as an academic exercise... but this is "music for musicians" to my ears.
This is probably one of their few albums that fits that description, but their majority of releases are music for regular people.
As a musician they bore me for not doing enough
No, musicians know very well what good songwriting is. This isn’t unfortunately. This is music for hipsters and for publications like pitchfork that need to make money promoting unlistenable music to pretend to be hip and fresh and relevant
@@Tityretupatulae I've played 5 instruments over my life and I like them :) I don't like hipsters or pitchfork though :( they're better songwriters than anyone else I've heard in about 3 years.
@@TityretupatulaeNow why do you and @unknown6390 feel the need to try and convince everyone that this band is terrible and unimpressive? If you, personally, don't like it, that's fine. But here's the thing, you can just say _that_ instead! It's so easy! Sure it's hippie music, often listened to by hippies, but they clearly know what they're doing and can write a great song. Again, if they're not your thing, fine by me, but just say that and stop trying to make people feel bad for enjoying something!
Unless you're both just doing this to garner attention or reactions. In that case, here you go!
I cut Stu Mackenzie's grandpa's hair hahaha. Love their music, been listening to em since I was about 15!
Maybe my favorite current band.
Ah yes Lizard Lizard and the Lizard Lizard.
