    Hi All, I hope you hd a great week, as you will see in this video, my week went a little oh dear. As many people say, Measure twice, Cut once. I should have thought about this before cutting into the fiberglass cowl of the plane,
    In this video we will try to fix the cowl by using fiberglass and resin to remake the side wall, if this works then we could fiberglass a whole foam plane! Maybe we will in another video.
    Stay safe and keep safe, but most of all..Have fun.....

    Great job Chris! Few tips for you, when you are fiberglass in a big area like that or any area where you want it smooth outside for less filler. Get yourself some three-quarter ounce cloth which is very fine. You will leave that as your first layer and then come back with a heavier cloth and cross grain it. Three layers is more than enough including the three-quarter ounce finishing layer witch you do first. Of course lay some resin in between each layer of cloth. You’re outside will be beautifully smooth with no holes and will give you less filler needed to be added. Also use a glazing putty for your final coat before painting. It is super fine and would allow you to fill all your pinholes.

    Besides from using PVA in stead of vaseline, your method of using balsa is the best I have seen so far. I will adopt this method for restoring my cowl. Thank you !!

      @@DadsRCHangar thanks Chris I’m gonna try get out in morning and have a fly if it’s not too blowy , I need to embrace the wind and not be scared of it I know it can help with flying but it’s knowing that when it can be good and not when you’re plane disappears lol I’ve lost couple little ones and it’s put me off a bit my foam spitfire has been out ages and it’s 1.2 m so should be ok in ten miles a hour wind but not brave enough yet to launch it but waiting for calm days is taking forever lol

    You did a good job on the cowl Chris, a little tip from me, when I cut big lumps of cowls off to fit I.C. Motors, I always keep the bit I cut out, then if I change motors etc I just glass it back in from the inside then use a bit of car body filler (isopon p38 to fill any marks on the joint, a quick and easy fix👍

    • @DadsRCHangar
      @DadsRCHangar  2 роки тому +2

      Lesson learned John, thank you for the tip, I think I have to master measuring the engine before I cut anything. It did not help that the thrust line for the engine made the OS mount go in a different place from what the manual said. Some tinkering about for the engine to sit in the correct place, you will see after Western Park. Have a lovely weekend John and thank you for popping by. 👍🏻

    Great job Chris, if you lightly spray the filler with Matt black and flat it back anything still black needs filler 👍

    • @DadsRCHangar
      @DadsRCHangar  2 роки тому +2

      Good tip Cliff, I still on cloud 9 that I made this work. Now I know how to do, I can take my time for anything else. For instance, I should have drawn the other side of the cowl edge on some balsa wood, then I could use that pattern to scrape the filler of the other side. Plus I should have glued a straight edge on the Balsa after the curve. Lesson learnt 😎. I might even fibreglass a foam plane as another project. Have a great weekend Cliff. 🫡

      @@DadsRCHangar Something else I've done in the past (as it's a discontinued model?) is to push the cowl into a small bucket of paster of Paris, just up to the rim (after taping up any holes and removing the exhaust stacks), that way you have a mould to lay up with fibreglass should you smash the original beyond repair. Ulternately you could make one up out of balsa ... that's how they were always made, cheers.

    • @DadsRCHangar
      @DadsRCHangar  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting Cliff, I was thinking doing something like this, it’s maybe a good idea with this model. Mind you, who knows what she will look like after a few flights 😎

    ITFF!!! I think I would have covered the inside of the balsa with packing tape which the resin would not adhere to. ZEN and the art of fibreglassing!
