So here at UDS Gaming we cover all things gaming, no matter genre, platform or era. But recently we’ve been delving more and more into horror games, and I’m not really sure why, but at the same I’m really not complaining. From recent releases to hidden gems of the past, we’ve covered some absolute spooky bangers.
And we’re hoping this trend continues with the recent release of The Last Faith, a game that looks to blend elements of Metroidvania and Soulslike to make for one atmospheric package.
You play as Eryk, who wakes up in a desolate world with no memory of how he got to this point, and swathes of Eldritch-style horrors in front of him as he races against time to save his deteriorating sanity.
But in an age when horror games have never been better, does The Last Faith do enough to stand out from the pack? Watch on to find out…
As you can imagine, the meat of the gameplay is a mix of non-linear exploration and bloody difficult combat, and I’ll talk a bit about both.
Now personally, I would say I enjoyed the exploration more, as everything felt purposeful, well designed and full of surprises. It feels like you’re discovering a living, breathing world, albeit one breathing the icy winds of death and decay. That was a bloody good line, wasn’t it, ruddy mysterious. There’s interesting NPCs who will reveal more of this world you’ve awoken in, piecing together the lore in a way that feels natural, without slowing the pace of gameplay.
There’s also the very welcome inclusion of fast travel points, which helped to keep things moving along at a healthy pace and most importantly for a scrub like me, stopped me getting lost.
Combat is also pretty good, if not perfect. You get a good mix of weapons, ranging from melee, ranged and magic. It’s an impressive variety, but you’ll definitely find some are more useful than others, and things can feel a little clunky. Now this might be your taste, as it can make things feel weighty and I guess in a sense more realistic, but I’m a man who likes his combat to be snappy, and this wasn’t quite snappy enough for my tastes. But I still had a good time getting to grips with the various systems, and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
And yes, like any Soulslike worth its salt, there’s a dodge roll. It’s not a fool-proof get-out-jail card, but you better get used to using it if you want to survive the various beasties.
And speaking of the beasties, there’s a lot of them and they’re bloody brilliant. You’ll find threats from all angles, from snipers who’ll take aim and try to take you down from distance, to rabid demon dogs that’ll charge you from close range. It’s punishing from the offset, and I think it’s fair to say there’s a steep learning curve.
But like many Soulslikes that have come before, there’s a rhythm to proceedings that once you get the hang of, is super satisfying like nothing else.
And that’s without mentioning the boss encounters, which open up into these immense setpieces that can honestly be jaw dropping. To evoke this sense of grandeur while limited to a 2D plane is mighty commendable.
Actually, I’d say the aesthetic of the entire game deserves a lot of praise. The pixel artwork is absolutely captivating, from hauntingly beautiful wilderness to ornate, gothic mansions. A more cynical reviewer might complain that it’s nothing we haven’t seen before in other games, but the sheer polish and refinement on show here is impossible not to enjoy on a visual level.
The sound design is equally engrossing. As action heightens, the score swells into epic, orchestral movements, but equally fades away into chilling silence in the quieter moments. This makes way for the ambient sounds of creaking buildings, the splatter of viscera and your own, echoing footsteps. It’s definitely one to check out with headphones to get the full effect...

I have. I liked it enough to net the 3 endings, but not really enough to get all the collectibles to net the secret boss. I really hate when metroidvanias do this. I'd like it if you could buy some sort of expensive compass to encourage players to seek them out (similar to Blasphemous' cherubs, or Hollow Knight's grubs). I thought it was a solid title and I enjoyed it the more I played. I like that it offered a wide selection of weapons and spells to play with, and I thought the combat was satisfying but a bit on the easy side. I would have liked for bosses to have hit harder, perhaps made the healing kick in over time. I look forward to any expansions/sequels as I think this was great for it being their first title.

Great review! I’ve played five hours so far, and I am having a good time. I told my wife that 7-year-old me would have been all about this game. I feel like I’m back in the days of renting NES/SNES games from the video store, staying up all night eating cereal, and taking turns at the game with my brother. I’ve tried a lot of “retro” games and modern side scrollers. They are great, but they don’t trigger the nostalgia quite like this one. I am interested to see what the dev would do with a sequel or their next IP.
So far, I think the voice acting is excellent, and I like how the dialog and cutscenes are presented. I’ve seen complaints about the writing, but it works for me. I really enjoy the subtle world-building, too. I don’t know what it is about this title that makes it feel more immersive than other side scrollers I have played. They’ve tapped into something I can’t quite put my finger on.
Part of me feels like modernizing would have elevated game, but I worry that then the magic would be lost. I am not sure what I would change. I am unsure whether I would like smoother animations, more responsive controls, or higher-quality sound effects. I feel like the mood of the game warrents a walking speed and running speed. I would definitely like more consistent music between rooms and longer tracks. I would have liked a little more content before the first boss. It would give people more to fall in love with before hitting a skill wall. It felt like, “Here’s less than five minutes of gameplay; now fight this boss ten times.” I started with the Stargazer, but I was too stubborn to change classes.

Its a lot of buggs. Had to quit game every time i encountered the dragon on the brige. Also the instans death at spikes makes it annoying to explore. A lot of cool thing. Weapon arts and lanscape. But Prince of percia was much better🙂

DS1 is kind of a 3D Metroidvania, and the game got a lot of souls dna so i'd say yes.

Maybe start with Hollow Knight. That’s looked at as a Metroidvania masterpiece and like Dark Souls, has an incredible world that you want to get lost in.

unfortunately if you have played Blasphemous before and then you go on this one the animations dont feel as smooth as they do in Blasphemous and that alone plus clunky combat can make you just forget the game at least i did, in terms of mele and combos theres not much there, sure the game has magic and guns but its not like its a giant theme i dont know maybe it just wasnt for me i would still recommend people to try it they might like it more than i did

This game is only like blasphemous visually. I had high hopes with all of the weapons options and the cool environments. But the mobility of the character was so clunky and restricted. And the combat was the same. I enjoyed what I could and beat the game with just a strength build. I experienced some bugs with some bosses that had me teleporting out of the arenas which was even more frustrating. There were also some peculiar rules for which enemy projectiles could pass through the stages.
I would say try the game but it shouldn't be compared to blasphemous 1 or 2 so as to not get one's hopes up lol. If I could do it again I would wait for it to go on sale.

Health flasks don't replenish on death or by using a save point.. they're a consumable which drops from enemies, very regularly in my experience (I'm always carrying 9 & have some in storage aswell). Not a major issue really

Loving the game but hating the bugs the frame rate and lag is ridiculous when there's multiple enemy's on screen doing things. the hot fix on ps4 whipped my save untill they rolled back the update. and the all spells achievement wouldn't drop after I got all spells. And I'm 83% complete. Clearly they didn't fully test there game before release. It's still a 4/5 for me. Maybee 5 stars when they fix it completely and add ng+.

Honestly, I prefer "recommend" or "not recommended" type of reviews. For the score, just see the Steam page, you will visit it anyway to get the game.
To me, scores don't give much, I pick UA-camrs who enjoy similar types of games to me, see if they recommend the games I'm interested in, I buy.
They don't recommend, I might double check the score on Steam, if it's good and they provide a demo - try the demo and decide for myself. No demo - no buy.

Literally nothing. What might be a 7 to him, might be a 4 or a 10 to you. 🤷‍♂️
