rtt's start at $650 australian so about $450 usd. hardshell popups start at $1000aud about $700usd. yes you can get 4 person rtt's. you can also lift them on and off by yourself if set up a pulley system in the roof of your garage which is also a good way to get it out of the way when not in use. just a few things i noticed.

Excellent review! The cost has me out. Honestly, if I had the money and seeing that I'm a truck guy, I'd go with a nice topper. Doesn't come off, can sleep in it, store stuff and etc... Much more efficient. Less space obviously, but much more useful.
I have been looking at the utility trailer with the topper. It looks like the best solution. I just can't see putting your main vehicle out of commission for a roof top tent. The utility trailer you just drop off your tow vehicle and level out the trailer and set up trailer with lots more storage that is more secure.
@@OutdoorsAllie plus you can store and lock everything up and stay at your campsite. I have been trying to figure out how to put one of these tents on a boat trailer and able to drop it before launching the boat. I may need a tampon trailer to pull it off for my 17 foot Bass Tracker.
We went with the roof top tent because when we car camp we are usually towing a small fishing boat. We've been using a traditional tent in the past, but love the idea of being up off the ground. The campground we go to its hard to find a really flat area too.
Good Job. I leave a tablecloth on the table and a chair at the campsite when I pack up to to go for the day. Never had a problem. It only takes 10 minutes to pack up.

Was looking in Google for how long they last. Haven't had a tent in many, many years. Back then the fabric would become brittle and rip. Looking at getting one for my Jetta. Love to travel, but hate dealing with hotel reservations. Thanks for the video. Was definitely nice to watch.
I have just started exploring roof top tent to possibly mount on a trailer (discovered Space Trailers in Minnesota). Although the tent and trailer is an investment, the trailer can be multi-purposed and not close to the investment one would have in a pop-up, teardrop or travel trailer if they don't need the extra room to accommodate a family.
Couple days ago I ordered my Tuff Stuff Ranger 3 person RTT , with annex room, for $1,378.65 off Amazon Prime. Should arrive any day now. I'm thinking that me and the wife will have lots of room up top and Jr can goof around in his 'downstairs' room.
Have you ever thought about truck bed tents? I had one and liked it alot they are much cheaper and have air mattresses that fit in the truck bed around the wheel wells you can get too.
they've become more of a trend than anything. I know a few people with them. you missed their main point/use(unless I missed it), it would be a "pro", I guess. they are mainly for being able to camp in areas where one couldn't otherwise. like in areas unsuitable for setting up a regular tent, could be rocky, marshy, etc. they don't even make sense to be using them in campgrounds, yet that seems to be the "trendy" use now. using them "to feel safer" is beyond ridiculous, nothing is attacking you in a tent anyway. but yeah, their price is beyond ridiculous, but, as long as people keep buying them, they ain't getting cheaper.

You didn’t mention the added weight on the top of the vehicle. Might not have effected your truck much but on SUVs they can cause a lot of balance issues.
You're absolutely correct, many people have had issues with unstable vehicles especially if they have to traverse uneven terrain to get to their campsite. Even on a truck I would get a rack that fits above the bed and never carry it higher than the roof. Which is another huge expense
@@asteiner9181 It seems odd to call out gas and wear and tear as a con, but then offer towing a trailer as an alternative. A trailer is going to have worse aerodynamics than a roof top tent, and it's going to be a lot heavier, giving you even worse gas mileage. Also, the tongue weight of your trailer is almost certainly heavier than the weight of a roof top tent, so you're putting just as much strain on your suspension and transmission.

I hope people watching your video understand that most animals, snakes, etc can climb. I know you said psychologically it helps but some might not understand. Go figure. 😁 otherwise great video.
I am a tent camper and just got back from a month long trip out west. My wife and I camped at campgrounds to BLM land. When we seen the rooftop tents I would set up my chair and a bag of popcorn. From setting up to taking down the roof top tents were a mess. People were climbing up and walking around on top of their vehicles to set up or take down. While at Yellowstone I got to see a family from California set up and take down their rooftop tent. It was so comical. He was yelling at everyone to do this or that all while he was walking on the windshield wipers and engine hood. Then he slipped and landed on the hood all while yelling at his kids. I looked over and my neighbor was getting a good laugh too. Do yourself a favor and just say NO to rooftop tents.
Its a shame that car manufacturers today don't design some vehicles with the Pontiac Aztek concept. Imagine the same Roof top tent you have with AC.. Yaaah Cool. I know,, Im a hopeless comfort leisure junkie.
Your experiences with RTT are very limited and some of your observations are not well informed. You can get quality hard shell for under 2k, you can get large ones that sleep 4 comfortably, the roof rack you use is not designed for an RTT and is dangerous, the squeaking is not from the RTT, it’s probably from your rack. Most people mount them on the back and leave them full time. You did not represent RTT’s very well in this video IMO.

I don't consider this camping, maybe the best term for it would be car-hiking. For this purpose a roof-top tent seems to be the best option.
Thanks for watching John.
I have no idea what you said, you are so gorgeous. Half-kidding ;) I am evaluating rooftop tents for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. This was very helpful, thanks!
I hope people watching your video understand that most animals, snakes, etc can climb. I know you said psychologically it helps but some might not understand. Go figure. 😁 otherwise great video.
Ask someone in the military if sleeping on the ground vs up in the air has advantages against insects.
Kool video like 😎👌🤙🤘👍an good work ⚘⚘⚘
Thanks Rick.
Did a good job on the pros and cons but you left out one con and that is if you sleepwalk at night 😁👍
hahahahahah
true
Con....go down the ladder for bathroom in middle of night?
Or zip open the window like Nick does LOL
Outdoors Allie ....that works! Lol
Use a bottle. Dont fancy opening sticky door handles in the morning 😂👍
LOL that does sound humorous.
Ours is useable in less than 10 mins.
I just read an article in outdoor life comparing camping options... Their review of roof-top tents said best use- Instagram. Real life not so much.
Buy a dummy Tent cheap for when you want to explore. It will Reserve your First come first serve spot
I will next year for sure!
Its a shame that car manufacturers today don't design some vehicles with the Pontiac Aztek concept. Imagine the same Roof top tent you have with AC.. Yaaah Cool. I know,, Im a hopeless comfort leisure junkie.
Sounds awesome lol.
Except for the carbon monoxide poisoning...what with the vehicle running and you being in the attached tent and all...
Thanks for watching Preston.
She is stunning! Great information. Your the first female that I've seen who enjoys camping.
The Tuff Stuff tent is $1,492😳
Most rooftop tents like the ikamper ones are around 3,000 so thats fairly good believe it or not
Quality snip
Thanks for watching Ben!
I’m sorry but your price ranges are way off. I got mine for $300 and it weighs about 20lbs
It's easier to shoot a wild animal attacking your tent from higher up... lol
LOL

Too much intro. Lose the vocal fry.
This bitch just called a 200 pound tent heavy.... Feelsbadman... I dieted from 235 to 215 and I would still be too fat to be a tent for her.... Keep up the great content! I like how you outlined everything which made it easier for me to skip to where I wanted!
LOL thanks for watching!
