Just so everyone knows, this tent ended up breaking and I got a warranty replacement that is heading the same way. I did an update video explaining what happened so please give it a watch. Cheers!
Very accurate review. I’ve had mine for 12 months and used lots. Another Con is the tie down straps. Would rather buckles. I have a 4 metres strap around the leading end in case those straps let go. Another dislike is the condensation on the inside of roof. Apart from that, again, top stuff.
“ Thanks for a great honest review. We are headed to the Big Red Bash in a couple of weeks and have ordered our tent! Thanks for helping us to decide what to buy:)” Cheers ✌🏻🇦🇺 Safe Travels
The “flappers” have been sorted!!! We were hanging towels on them.... but after heaps of suggestions we now feed them through some little gaps at the top of the tent! I can’t remember who gave me that tip but cheers 👍🏽
You can use one of the internal bungy cords that come inside the tent to link the 2 flappy straps together and tuck them up above the side door, its a very quick and easy solution. Great review too guys
We have had ours for 18 months and absolutely love it recommend it to anyone that doesn't want to spend a fortune as all others start fron $4500 & upwards absolutely fantastic for the money.
Subscribed mate. Fantastic vibe on your show. In an age of 200 grand plus super rig's its awesome to see realistic set ups with real people doing trips that are accessible to us regular folk. Will keep an eye out for your videos
Cj francis thanks very much mate glad you liked it! Yeah I think it does put people off a bit, and it makes them feel like they need a serious rig to get out among it.
Interesting about the canvas. I'm guessing they use similar canvas on their tents and swags. We bought a cheap Kings Double Swag, literally for a single 3 week trip so weren't expecting much. I'm actually very impressed by it. Waterproof and very durable. Been using it for 3 years without issue now. Our other two more expensive swags leak in very heavy rain, which this doesn't. Cheap doesn't always mean lower quality. You've got me thinking about one of these tents now.
TK-421 I agree about the canvas, they’re onto something good. I suppose if you’re making it at the quantities they are you could make half decent stuff very cheap. We haven’t had a drop of water inside from the start and is holding its integrity very well in massive changes in climate and temperature.
Overland travellers The two belts on the outside of the tent, to solve the wind and beating sound problem: 1- tape them to the hardshell before you go into the tent. 2- throw them on top of the tent and tie them up together with a little piece of rope or shoelace.
Great vid. I picked up one of these and love it. I also came up with a solution for “the flappers” after opening up the tent, throw each strap onto the roof, then I climb to the very top of the ladder and use a small adjustable strap (occy strap would work too) between the two straps. Hope that helps!
iKamper Skycamp, Budtrol makes one and there is another company in qld who makes the half clam shell half hard top, give them a look at, I went to Fraser in one and they're the best. They're huge easy to set up (only 2 straps) have bigger windows and are just as quick to set up (they're about 2.1x2.1m).
I have no problem with mine,to give you some idea,on my vehicle, the ladder is barely long enough,so the pack up solo is a little harder than you experience. If you get a couple of stretchy straps, you can stop the straps flapping in the wind, see how you go,one less con👍
Wayne Doeblin haha I wish my ute had that kind of height, it’d mean I have actual clearance 😂 nah I got new suspension in recently and it’s a lot higher, and adds a little more effort to the pack up. And yeah it’s great how many different ideas I’ve got to sort the flappers from everyone, better than me just hanging the towels off. But yes straps have been mentioned a few times I’ll pick some up when I’m in bunnings next. Cheers mate!
bro I put a simple plastic glue on hook on the front and back under the tent and it holds the loops down. then just run a hair tie or some tape around it and you have no flapping in the wind. The flapping is terrible and you cant sleep through it if you dont do it. good review brother!
Top review, very comprehensive. I've just bought one and have lined the roof with a van liner to keep in some heat and stop some heat and to deaden any sound of rain on it.
Overland Travellers got the Van Liner through Car Builders you buy in a 5 metre roll for $133. Feel like I’m in an oven or air con duct but does the job. Bugger to put on. Self adhesive and needed to put on in strips to make it look reasonable. Just laid a big strip without sticking ,under the mattress to stop cold from underneath
I have a Maggiolina, which is four times the price. Ten years old still flawless. No noise when driving and no change in fuel consumption. So I wonder how this holds up in the long run. Gas struts will have to be replaced at some point, usually they stop working in cold weather. The Maggiolina shell looks more sturdy and has a more streamlined look. For the money the Kings may be a good buy.
Great review, thank you so much for putting it up. Hearing that your tent is needing replacement has really helped me make the decision on what to purchase for our needs.
I know you said the flapper issue is solved, I have one of the Kwiky RTT's and I just tie the cam buckle strap to the pull down. Works a treat. Loving your vids too. 👍
Got to hand it for you to you for sticking it out for two months! I use a spring loaded carabiner to stop the flappers. You'll find it's just long enough to hook on where the roof top tent bolts to your roof rack. you do have to tweak it a bit and pull it to one side to get the best result. I've added two extra layers of foam to my mattress too but it's only just bearable. Definitely considering a high density foam mattress from Clark rubber. Looking at about $300 though. Also postage to WA for me was about $300. another con I would say to is being black really absorbs heat if you want to have a nap during the day, it's a no go. I'm on my second tent now. With this one has the weatherproof ladder flaps on the wrong side for my setup. It all comes down to how they assemble in the factory. First one was fine but now I'm putting holes in my canvas hooking my ladder on the wrong side. I have to unzip the canvas and unbolt the struts and twist it 180° to get the canvas weatherproof flaps on the correct side for the ladder. That is if I can be bothered taking the tent off the roof.
Reuben Jones that’s a bloody good way to strap the flappers down! We just started hanging towels on them every night and that works well, but not great for the towels if it rains 😂 next bunnings trip I’ll pick some up. Yes foam is surprisingly expensive! Exactly the issue we ran into when I was looking at doing it, I luckily got a 250mm mattress for free through work, which made cutting it to pieces a bit easier to do without thinking about how much it cost. But you will have to cut it so the struts fold in correctly. If you do get one message me and I’ll show you how I have done it. And yeah agree it get very hot. All tents do but this a bit more so. And that’s weird they do it at different sides, I would have thought they would do it to both sides!
So nice to hear Aussie voice on UA-cam. Subscribed just cos that (well and you say you'll be vlogging your travels around Oz). I liked how the tent was dusty and stuff - obviously getting used and well, dust, so Australian
Fantastic video mate. Love the tent and price point for just a place to be able sleep off the ground. This yank will see where I can find a pop-up tent like that in the States for my Chevy Colorado.
If you get another one built 100% the same way by kings but arb or tjm put there name on it instead of kings the price will go up $500+ even $1000 easy, a lot of the time your paying for the band name not the product its self.
To stop the straps flapping roll the front one up and tuck it between the shell and canvas. For the rear pull it though the zipper at the top. Helps out a lot
Anything with gas struts has a powerful internal strain when the struts are compressed. This means plastic needs to be reinforced with metal, such as stainless steel or aluminium. I always reinforce them with stainless--it is tougher. Some have tried fibreglass with metal inserts to take the dtrut anchor points. Lotsa luck wuth that one, but properly done it should work as long as the struts are not too powerful.
Hey Matt and Holly, great video and a little marketing goes a long way I guess as found your channel via this vid and will watch your adventure unfold. You balanced the audio well on this one with music not overwhelming the commentary, looking forward to seeing your new camera in action on your next upload. Great honest review, the getting-in-and-out challenge is one that might see us buy a different tent, otherwise good to know the more affordable option stacks up ok so far. Safe travels.
David R thanks so much mate it’s good to hear that it’s brought you to our channel :) hopefully the quality and adventures only get better from here! Cheers mate.
Shane Von Harten haha cheers mate. Don’t worry, if I had the cash, Alu-cab all they way. But I’d rather be touring around aus in my Kings tent now compared to not at all!
The con you listed about the pull cords is easily fixed by tying off a guideline to your towe ball away from the actual tent and on the front you can tie it through a front door handle or something. That would have driven me crazy for the length of time it took me to find some string and tie it.
Nice, it's annoying when you've got rattles and bangs disturbing your sleep. Love your country, plan on living there in 5 years and exploring, can't wait.
My roof cracked on this exact tent right on the 11 month mark, one month before warranty. I got my money back tho so appreciate that. Going with the James when I can as that has a five year warranty.
Michellina van Loder that’s interesting. It’s good they honored the warranty at least! Yeah I think I’ll have to do a “12 month update” on it. And that’s a massive difference on the James tent for warranty. Fingers crossed it lasts me haha
@@OverlandTravellers Hi I had one when I opened it the two front struts did not work. they supplied two new ones for me to fit. (no compensation for fitting) then after 6 months the two front corners cracked on the upper shell. They replaced it with a new complete unit. Fitting was also a problem as I was fitting it on Rhino Racks heavy duty the bolts supplied were not long enough & i had to work out some way to fasten them. The new unit cracked after two months when I got in touch with them I asked if my warranty would be extended because the hole unit was replaced & the answer i got was that the warranty ran out 12 months after i bought it which means i did not get a full 12 months warranty because it was 6 weeks after paying for it that i got it. So I asked for my money back & got it no problem. Must say they were good with my claims replacing & then refunding. On my last trip Sydney to Brisbane I saw 3 Kings Pop Up Tents & each one was starting to crack as mine did. I would say to you to check yours as I stopped your video on the only good view of the drivers side front ( 3 min 30 in) & it is showing signs of cracking as mine did. I also had trouble once it was fastened the out sides of the bottom shell was flexible & rattled so I had to put rubber under it. Other than the cracking problem I thought it was good to sleep in for 1 person & once I got use to putting it up & down on my own no problem. I did enjoy your video I thought you did a great job good luck with your travels.
Allan Davis that’s good to hear about someone who has had one of these tents longer! Thanks for all the tips, I’ll have to make sure it doesn’t crack, I’m about to get onto the really rough stuff so the real test will be the next 6 months. Good to hear they at least were good with the refunding of the money.... who knows..... I might need it soon!
Hi guys awesome review. We have subscribe and are starting to watch your videos. We have purchased a Kings 2.0 and are wanting to direct stick a solar panel to the top do you have one that you recommend. Cheers
As with most of Kings products, this thing is an absolute bargain! Let's face it, 95 percent of people who buy their stuff are probably likely to use it half a dozen times a year at most. Used in that capacity, you don't need a $5000 roof top tent! Sure, you might be hardcore or planning some major adventure but I still think the Kings tent would be up to the task.
Music Islife that’s right people literally use this stuff maybe once a month. I’ve been living full time out of it for a while and it’s been fine so far!
Great review. I did notice that the side of the shell seemed to be distorted along its length when you were closing it. Did this have an adverse impact on dust and water ingress. The MK11 has just been released and might be worth a look. just interested in the occasional post Covid getaway.
Hey Guys thanks for the review. I am going to be purchasing the same type of roof top tent for my Triton, so any review i get is good at this stage as i have not yet purchased one. thanks heaps.
Good review. Never liked rooftop tents tho. After a bottle of liquor, bit hard to get up the ladder haha. Then needing to get out to take a whiz a few times during the night.
We have the clam style and find a collapsible shoe box from Big W a great solution for shoes/boots in our tent. A great overall review of the poptop style.
Have you considered putting a latex mattress in there. Your sleep will be the best ever. Much better than a normal foam mattress. Little bit heavier but definitely worth it.
TinyHouse and Offgrid Resources yeah mate pretty heavy.... but rooftop tents generally are around that. I suppose it’s a decent surface area and if you had really thin plastic it would turn to shit pretty quick. But yeah if you’re a serious off roader too much weight up top would be a deal breaker.
Jimi Lewis I think it comes down to the tents being really accessible to everyone because of the price, so more Kings tents means more people reviewing them :) Haha don’t worry I’d love to do a Alu-cab review one day!
Mate . Love the gag reel. Bonza. One thing popped into my head with regards to the tent is not only having to get out of it in the middle of the night as you mentioned, but having to get out of the thing at any time when its it's raining. I take it that your going to get wet even with that piddly little awning?
Its great.....my logic is......great option for weekends away perhaps a week......4 to 5 grand for the top option??? Well id buy a caravan once we start talking that sort of money......Kings....best value for the weekend warrior
The ‘Kings’ gear just looks cheap. There blue & white logo is terrible. I am biased though, after having problems with there gear on several occasions. I’m not knocking your video though, I liked it. New subscriber.
retry tobuy it defiantly is cheap, in build and price. And I know what you mean about the logo 😂 cheers mate! You’ll like the next few reviews coming out :)
Overall though, it seems like a very nice tent! Like would you argue that the 'imperfections' are just things that glampers would worry about? What's camping without a little bit of work-around or puzzle?
@@OverlandTravellers I came across your video right now... Thanks for that! I'm planning a few trips where I will be depending on it day after day so this does make me umm and arr. BUT nothing against your channel or the product 😊
Zhu Oscar mate I have the ladder racks on the canopy which I use. I have 3 on there but if I knew how to spacing on the rails worked on the tent I’d have got 4 ladder racks.
Do you know a supplier of these shipped to the US? They're like $2k+usd ($2,900aud) here plus shipping and I can't see spending that much on something that'll likely break like your's.
I bought one second hand and it had no fittings. Could someone here please post a picture of what they look like ? The things that attach the rtt to the roof racks/ tray.
Haha the end is too good! Question.. how does it go with rain? The windows don't have any covers over them, does water get in if you zip the window cover up?
@@OverlandTravellers Hey mate, I did see it a few days ago, should've updated my comment. I LOVED your optimism... 'I'll... probably just get another warranty replacement I guess.' GOLD. Sheer Gold!
Well kings have sold thousands of them this is the first time i have head of them breaking i am still buying one they are way cheaper than others made in the same factory
If you only go camping a few times a year it will be fine. Not sure about the new ones but when we had them, two broke in the same way and we had a lot do people messaging us with the same experience. We even had a kings employee message us and tell us they were very well aware of the issue. So they might have fixed it I honestly don’t know. Hope it goes well for you 👍🏽

Great review. I did notice that the side of the shell seemed to be distorted along its length when you were closing it. Did this have an adverse impact on dust and water ingress. The MK11 has just been released and might be worth a look. just interested in the occasional post Covid getaway.
Great review Matt I loved my Kwiki :-) I used an occy strap to stop the flappers :-)
David Long that’s a pretty good idea, we might give that a try. Will save us hanging towels on them :)
@@OverlandTravellers anything to stop them from flapping in the middle of the night. Do you have a Facebook page?
David Long we totally agree with you there! Yes we do have a Facebook page, you should be able to find it under our name Overland Travellers 😊
You should use bungees to tie down the straps so it won’t flap around when the wind hits it...
Great video guys, very good honest review. Cheers!
Good review and how-to make it better.
Like the bloopers at the end. Nice touch.
Martin Febanske cheers mate! They’re my favorite part of the editing haha
great review mate, hope the travels are treating you both well
Joel Moe glad you liked it mate!
Thanks for the video man really informative stuff and I can’t find enough of this real people using these products in everyday life
Your Undies hey mate glad you liked it but please check out the follow up video where I had had a few problems with it
Hey Guys thanks for the review. I am going to be purchasing the same type of roof top tent for my Triton, so any review i get is good at this stage as i have not yet purchased one. thanks heaps.
Reinforce the gas struts stress points and use it on a small trailer--excellent value. A camper for under five grand new? Yes we can.
Boom DROP the mic say no more. 7.24 in you solved my one and only ? solar on the roof. answer flexable solar panel.
thank you SO MUCH. Greateful
Good review. Never liked rooftop tents tho. After a bottle of liquor, bit hard to get up the ladder haha. Then needing to get out to take a whiz a few times during the night.
Have they fixed this cracking problem with these rooftop Tents .
Very well done, thanks for sharing this
We have the clam style and find a collapsible shoe box from Big W a great solution for shoes/boots in our tent.
A great overall review of the poptop style.
Where do you leave it when in the tent?
Great review.
Hey..would the ladder be long enough for a patrol with 3inch lift & 33inch tyres do you think?
Daryl Zampese yeah mate pretty sure it would. Just go online and have a look at how tall it is fully extended.
Great review, now subscribed
Have you considered putting a latex mattress in there. Your sleep will be the best ever. Much better than a normal foam mattress. Little bit heavier but definitely worth it.
Which king was it invented by?
Did you say 70kg!? thats nuts. has it got a steel base?
TinyHouse and Offgrid Resources yeah mate pretty heavy.... but rooftop tents generally are around that. I suppose it’s a decent surface area and if you had really thin plastic it would turn to shit pretty quick. But yeah if you’re a serious off roader too much weight up top would be a deal breaker.
@@OverlandTravellers exactly. I like the idea of a solar rooftop shower but I don't like the idea if 40kg up there love your vids
Wow at that weight it won't be coming off after every trip. Lol
Have just watched 30 RTT vids. Kings show up more than they should. They seem to be a budget product but are saturated in the searches.
Jimi Lewis I think it comes down to the tents being really accessible to everyone because of the price, so more Kings tents means more people reviewing them :) Haha don’t worry I’d love to do a Alu-cab review one day!
Did someone say tassie lol 😂🍻🥾😎💪
Great review im tossing up with this and the dune nomad one...doesnt look like.much head space can you sit up in it ?
Mate . Love the gag reel. Bonza. One thing popped into my head with regards to the tent is not only having to get out of it in the middle of the night as you mentioned, but having to get out of the thing at any time when its it's raining. I take it that your going to get wet even with that piddly little awning?
You left out the part where someone closes it on you.
Great review Matt - thank you!!
Thank you so much!! Fantastic review. We're in Tassie at the moment!
Eve & Artie such an amazing state! And the free camping is second to none!
Eve & Artie me too. But I live here, sooo, there's that, lol.
Its great.....my logic is......great option for weekends away perhaps a week......4 to 5 grand for the top option??? Well id buy a caravan once we start talking that sort of money......Kings....best value for the weekend warrior
Great vid just one thing when it’s raining I assume you would get wet getting in and out. Thanks Alan
alan coller yeah you do but I suppose most tents it would be the same.
People like to shit on Kings gear, but it's the difference between spending $20k or $2k on your setup.
Master Ruseman I agree 100%
Overall though, it seems like a very nice tent! Like would you argue that the 'imperfections' are just things that glampers would worry about? What's camping without a little bit of work-around or puzzle?
Kyle I really like using this tent..... but I’d watch my other video on it.... it broke
@@OverlandTravellers I came across your video right now... Thanks for that! I'm planning a few trips where I will be depending on it day after day so this does make me umm and arr. BUT nothing against your channel or the product 😊
nice and detailed review! btw which kind of roof rack u use under the tent?
Zhu Oscar mate I have the ladder racks on the canopy which I use. I have 3 on there but if I knew how to spacing on the rails worked on the tent I’d have got 4 ladder racks.
@@OverlandTravellers thanks for the info!
Nice one Mate. Now subscribed.
Hilarious! Good review too :P
Where is the best price of this tent? Looked around about $1500?
Straight up thanks mate.
No worries!
Nothing worse than bad flappers 😂👍 love your work guys
Doesn’t look very airtight when you strapped it down?
Mazda_Media yeah I’ll see how it goes when we get onto the red dirt! Might be a different story inside.
Do you know a supplier of these shipped to the US? They're like $2k+usd ($2,900aud) here plus shipping and I can't see spending that much on something that'll likely break like your's.
I'm just gona find an old spa pool n stick it on my roof.
How thick was the foam you put in instead of the mattress they gave you mate?
more kings reviews please! loving them
big dogs gotta eat if you want more you’ll get em! I’ve got enough of the stuff to keep the content up for a while.
Good review. I reckon It's perfect for down here in Tas.
Mitchell we spent 6 weeks in tassie with it and it was great.
I bought one second hand and it had no fittings. Could someone here please post a picture of what they look like ? The things that attach the rtt to the roof racks/ tray.
Some bungie with slight tension around the canvas might help with closing
Evan McSwegan yeah it actually has two small bungie cords on the inside that you hook on before you climb out and it pulls the canvas in :)
Haha the end is too good!
Question.. how does it go with rain? The windows don't have any covers over them, does water get in if you zip the window cover up?
kizz jd honestly we haven’t had a single drip of water get in and that’s in some pretty serious rain 👍🏽
Excellent bloody review. That’ll do me!
whats it like on a heavy rainy windy night?
How thick is the base of the Kwiky MKII Hard Shell Roof Top Tent?
No idea look it up 👍🏼
How does it do with wind make, it a much of a issue being that high when setup?
How do you put these top of your truck thought? Do they do it for you?
G'day Matt, loved the review...how have you found it after a few more months?
Raymond Stanton hey mate watch my second video on it! It’s more recent.... I kinda broke 😅
@@OverlandTravellers Hey mate, I did see it a few days ago, should've updated my comment. I LOVED your optimism... 'I'll... probably just get another warranty replacement I guess.' GOLD. Sheer Gold!
Use a occy strap on your flappers over the roof to pull them together
Would you worry about the ladder scratching on paintwork or something if I just had the standard tray and canopy, not the box like you do?
Kyle you might need an old sheet if you don’t want any scratches :)
Hope it goes well for you 👍🏽
Good review, thanks
Great video, cheers!
thank you very much for your comical information .you have convinced us thats just what we need ,,,
Inka Herman watch my next video on the tent! It broke......
Great review thanks
Looking to hunt from this tent. Do the windows on either end open completely including fly screen.
Yes they do...
Thinking of getting a roof rack for my soft top 95 yj....then I'll have an instant sleep area if I camp or drink too much
E vazkee haha that’s what it’s perfect for! Instant up and no thinking about the setup ;)
