    This is what I like about China: It's an ambitious country and it's not afraid of undertaking colossal endeavors. I'm not Chinese, but for some reason, their tremendous levels of ambition give me goosebumps, and frankly, make me proud to be human again. We need more countries that are willing to take such risks for the sake of moving humanity forward if we are to reinvigorate a sense of purpose and pride within our species. Somewhere throughout the middle of the 20th century, "we" (mainly the West) lost our way and started focusing on celebrities, fleeting pleasures, and vapid entertainment rather than inspiring acts of human bravery and ingenuity. We need a sense of purpose if we are to get out from the moral rut we're in now. At least, that's how I feel.

      +Siamand Omar The biggest problem in many "westernized" countries is that most citizens have already settled into a comfortable situation, even in cases they shouldn't be, they are distracted by fundamentally unimportant things. Most of those countries it's the lowest common denominator which dictates the culture. The top 1-2% essentially lives a separate & segregated lifestyle. They are the invisible hand, a much more sophisticated invisible hand.

      Siamand Omar one simple reason. China had endured through the 20th century--- the Century of Humiliation for China. It is that past humiliation that pushes the Chinese to strive their best to reverse this humiliation and discrimination from the past century. They want to prove that they are no longer the Asia's sick man anymore. They will ensure no one will ever look down on them anymore. This century will be the Century of Tremendous Rise for China.

      @@Yalishenderful Yes my comment could have been more aggressive however China's stability is not really long lasting. They have shot themselves in the foot. Western investment is for quick profit as a plan. Chinese investment is planned for the next 500years. They have become like Japan unable to self sustain it's self or feed themselves. By being cheaper labour corporations closed and chose to manufacture In China. China's economy relies on Western customers. If you take the money from your customers then eventually economy slows down. China's plan is to create a marine silk road to Australia as they are educated on the fact that the continent of Australia holds more natural resources than any other continent and is very much untapped. Modern China was built on these resources. Second and largest mistake that China has made is assumption. Example of this is there largest water dam project which failed. At present from latest data China's annual rainfall can only supply 19% of there population. They are not as strong as we all think. However no matter what they plan in other countries is never ever a sure thing when that countries government can change laws to suit it's interest even if the land has been purchased by China.

      Yeah but the ego of a Chinese leader is beyond belief. In Europe, a leader like the Italian republic power is check by powerful families, voted council members and different bodies to distribute the power.
      During 514, a Liang emperor order a dam built. This was intended to create a reservoir up stream that would drown the unassailable fortification of Shouyang to regain the stronghold from the Northern Wei.
      Of course his engineers were shocked and pleaded with him not to give them the assignment. As the Huai River had a very silty riverbed, and was prone to shifting. It was a disaster in the making that could not only fail to drown their enemies but instead unleash that terror of water on their citizens on the plain down stream.
      The work took 2 years. A wooden dam was built measuring 4 and a half kilometres long (sorry forgot the dimensions), except that it was roughly 70% of the reservoir of the Hoover dam and required constant maintenance and supervision. The entire army camp was based off the wooden dam wall top itself.
      Winter came, the huai river level rose greatly and the dam broke. More than 100,000 people died and the entire army camp of soldiers on top of the dam wall was killed... That's enough to put anyone in big waters. Not finished yet... Not only did this emperor not get overthrown, he will repeat this strategy again later in his life, but this time succeed.

      @@ananthaswath5543 You can get the exact dimensional details if you have a copy for the zizhi tongjian.
      You could also check out the the history of china podcast in-which the podcaster had converted the Chinese measurements to American imperial system and metric in order to calculate roughly the volume of water held in respect to the Hoover dam in America
      Otherwise, as taken from wikipedia:
      Starting in 514, Emperor Wu started carrying out a major construction project, downstream from Shouyang on the Huai River-a major dam that was intended to create a reservoir to flood Shouyang to allow Liang to capture the city. He started the project despite opposition from his engineers (who believed that the Huai River contained too much dirt in its water for a dam of the size necessary to be built). Despite engineering difficulties, however, the dam was successfully built by the general Kang Xuan (康絢) -- albeit at a major loss of life among the workers, due to the amount of work necessary and the diseases that occurred among them. (Zizhi Tongjian described the casualty rate to be at 70% to 80%.) Northern Wei's regent Empress Dowager Hu (who became regent over Emperor Xiaoming after Emperor Xuanwu's death in 515) sent armies commanded by Li Ping (李平) to attack Kang's escort forces, but could not damage the dam, which was finally completed in summer 516. it was described to be four and a half kilometers long, and the army pitched camp on the dam itself. Kang skillfully maintained the dam, and Shouyang began to be flooded. However, Emperor Wu recalled Kang to the capital and put the general Zhang Baozi (張豹子) in charge of the dam. Zhang, far less skillful and attentive than Kang, did not maintain the dam. With Huai River's water level greatly rising in winter 516, the dam collapsed, leading to more than 100,000 deaths downstream, and Shouyang was saved...
      ... Shouyang fell to Liang troops after Emperor Wu successfully reemployed the damming strategy. For the next several years, Liang continued to make minor gains on the borders with Northern Wei.

    Amazing video. Many thanks. After reading some of the comments, have something to say.
    Western world, led by the US, always blames China for no reason, for every reason. They mock everything in China, criticize everything. For example, human right, every year the US goverment publish a report just to criticize China. But why don't you take the history factor into concern? Not every country is as rich as America, and they need time to change. For my dad, he is the only person among his 6 siblings and 30 cousins who finished high school. Actually, most people at that time dropped middle school because they need to work for food. For me, I was born in a small city in Liaoning Province in 1992. Frankly, that time was hard and poor, my parents, even though they are both engineers, didn't earn enough money for us to buy what we need for daily usage. Groceries like meat, seafood, eggs, dairy, bakery and ice cream were so expensive that we only bought some during the holiday. The only source of protein was beans. In 1998, they saved half a year's salary and bought a desktop. In 2001, they saved 4 years and bought a new 2B1B condo. But since 2002, I can easily felt our life was changed, they could earn more, life was much better, I can drink milk every day. Before 2002, they only earn less than 1k RMB monthly, and now as of 2018, this number become 20k(of course CPI matters a little bit). And from 2014, thanks to my parents they could support me to study overseas, 100K US dollars, without a loan, without a scholarship. When the US blame China, please imagine if US was in the same scenario , what would US do? The major problem of China during that time is not what they said the right of election, but feeding people and distinguish starve.
    I was told America was haven before my life in America, but during these years living here, I don't think so. Guns, drugs, race, hate to Islam, tax, illegal immigration, terrible Trump and fake Clinton. I will not say American is terrible, just like every individual is different, its normal that each country has its own problem. But when judging others, please put yourself into others' shoes. One day you meet a beggar begging for bread. He almost dies. And you, a mid-class, or anybody who don't know what a beggar's life is, ask him: you wanna feed you with bread? Why don't you do something to feed your spirit first? The same reason, understanding and respect. There isn't a best way and political system around the world. All of the countries just choose the most suitable one for them.

    If you think about how quickly China developed from an agrarian rural 'backwater' in 1945 - that had recently been economically exploited by the UK, Germany and USA on an epic scale and pounded by Japan in WW2 - to one of the the world's leading countries today it makes your head spin. It really is incredible.There are 341 cities in China with a population greater than 1 million. How many can you name? Exactly. The media coverage of China is minimal and though it has improved a bit, there is no emphasis on how quickly China is doing what in the west took hundreds of years. It is comical how the Economist, Financial Times, Time magazine and other western stealth propaganda purveyors used to run stories about "China's upcoming crash" or "China Economy to Implode by 2013". But of course. Just like in 1997 the headlines were all about how Hong Kong was going to become a totalitarian hellhole where nobody wanted to live. But of course.
    China also killed the lie that a centrally planned economy can never be flexible enough to keep up with consumer demand and supply the market with a wide variety of stuff people actually want to buy. While China is capitalist it is still run like a socialist country and the CPC is still officially dedicated to actualizing Communism. Whether that happens remains to be seen but it would be a delicious irony if China in 50-100 years actually pulled off a successful transition to Communism as envisioned by Marx and Engels. What most people do not know is that Marx was a great admirer of western capitalism which, during its heyday, was the most advanced and efficient economic system ever devised and lifted millions out of poverty and destitution. Marx thought capitalism would eventually fall apart due to its internal contradictions and communism would be its successor. The Soviet Union failed in part because it tried to skip the capitalist step and force a communist system out of the ruins of Czarist feudalism. That did not work out to well and it is a mistake that China did not make. And western capitalism, since it became 'financialized', is in a serious bind it can't easily get out of. While Chinese and BRIC capitalism is still lifting people out of poverty this trend has stalled and even reversed itself in the west where the middle class is being kicked down into the working class and the super wealthy elites are hoarding their profits and starving governments of much needed tax revenue.Western political parties foolishly agreed to give the capitalist class more power over the economy and have lost the ability to procure revenue for public services and infrastructure upkeep. Hence the endless austerity and the internal tensions in Europe and the USA as citizens lose access to secure good paying jobs and wages plummet as the cost of living rises. This also gave rise to right-wing populism and Trump and Brexit in the UK. The elite and government leaders however seem to have no clue to resolve this crisis.
    China must be watching with some amusement as its rivals hasten their own demise. And I just wrote a long comment on a year old YT video that nobody is going to read. Except you, dear reader, and for this I thank you ;-)

      Great insight, agreed on majority of the comments except one: the former soviet union didnt work out not only because of the skip of the capitalism, but also many other reasons. One of the reasons was the “shock therapy” which was sold by U.S. and adopted by russia and many eastern European countries. They fully opened up their market to the world in one day without building up and strengthening their market and economy first. The vultures with capitals flooded in and grabbed huge benefits from it. China back then tried the “shock” for less than a month and stopped it after realizing that there were problems. Instead they took the slower and safer approach to achieve a free market one step at a time. The first step was to build up Shenzhen, which was a tiny fishing village back then, and opened it up as an experiment”. The policies that were proved to be working there would be slowly applied to the whole country, while any failures would be carefully studied.

    China today is a pretty interesting and impressive country and government. We here in the USA might like to denigrate China as that "communist country" but it has two very impressive things going on for it - namely an benevolent and efficient project oriented government, and a lot of personal and entrepreneurial freedom for the Chinese people. I posture that their "system" just might be better than ours - especially compared with our war mongering, wasteful, can't agree on anything, lobbyist-dominated government.

      China's system is not just an influence of communism. It's more about culture and history. I don't think other countries can match China just by using communism. In China, to become a government employee, you have to take a test, and only those with advanced education qualifications are eligible. Such a screening method enables people with higher quality to enter government institutions. There are other measures. I believe China can take better care of the Chinese people. I really feel sorry for you folks, there are just too many like you from this comment section that chose to hate China as a way to blind fold yourself from seeing how bad you own country is compare to China. I don't see any sense of superiority from those hateful comments but instead, is just jealousy, despair and resentfulness. Keep up the China bashing and hopefully it help to suppress your severe depression.

    Western going renewable energy = environment awareness;
    China going renewable energy = cut cost in order to achieve higher GDP growth

      to be fair though in the US it is to cut cost as well even if it goes to the upper class businessman just like it does in china

      Real Tibetans will never accept China's occupation of Tibet. But unfortunately China has sent hundreds of thousands of Chinese into Tibet to ruin Tibet's aspirations of freedom.

    Great doc! I'm both fascinated and apprehensive of China's plans to basically terraform vast areas of their continent and engineer "uhphill" rivers and huge changes in water flow. With mega-projects like these will also come mega-disasters. . but I think that is a price they are willing to pay. China will have a new kind of tourist who go there to marvel at the feats of human engineering. .

    • @TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel
      @TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel  8 років тому +7

      +Daniel Tynan Appreciate that, Daniel! I hope to be one of those "megaproject tourists" too soon, and will of course make videos sharing that experience...

      Daniel Tynan....you should go visit one of those ghost cities with european themed buildings like little paris and london replica bridges in China - for some reason I want to go and sightsee them whilst they're still relatively uncrowded and new.
