I got into trouble building a stash ... I have a huge amount of fabric I no longer like as I now know better what my style is ... I can not afford to buy different fabric because I am now retired. I also no longer have the storage area I once had ..... I recommend only getting backgrounds ... the rest can be buying just for a project. Usually you will have enough scraps left over for future scrappy fabrics. ONLY BUY what you absolutely love as there is always more fabric available.

I too am retired and try to only buy fabric for projects. I do keep some solids but seem to find I don’t have enough of something when I go to use it. I would love to have a nice stash, but fear I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from buying everything I love!

@@donnaschindlbeck7457 I've once found myself with the not enough background material problem. I like using white as a background so now I buy tone on tone whites and always make sure that I use a variety of them as background in the same quilt. If I do start to run out I can always by another tone on tone white and it doesn't matter if the pattern isn't the same. I simply move blocks around.

As a quilter who doesn't need to buy a stash, I'm going to offer the suggestion as to buying fabric. My suggestion is that you don't buy fabric that you really don't like the colors of, or patterns used. I don't buy pre-cuts because after looking and looking through them, I never find a collection that I really love all of the fabrics in it. The example here in the stack of fat quarters, I'd throw out the black prints as I'd never use them. The only black I use is solid for back grounds. The next section of the fabric is blue and that's OK, but the green isn't my favorite green. It's a yellow green which sets my teeth on edge. I have occasionally used orange when I've had scraps of it given to me, but I don't buy it. Yellows, I like bright clear true yellow with no hint of orange in it. Reds, I'll buy true red, to cherry red and cold reds that will go with blue, but not orange reds (I think my total dislike of orange is showing again). The cream based fabric in the bundle again doesn't really interest me as I tend to use pure white for backgrounds and the cream just sort of looks wrong to me against clear white. I suggest that a new quilter watch the various videos on fabric reveals. Look at bundle after bundle of fat quarters being opened where you haven't bought them. Look to see what you honestly like in the bundle, as to color and prints. You might find yourself in the same situation I do when watching them. "Thinking, Oh, that's a pretty blue but why did they print cars on it?" That would be an entire fat quarter that I wouldn't use, but I would have paid for. I buy fat quarters individually , and pick out a number that I like the colors and they go well together. Buy only fabric that pleases your eye and you'll end up with a stash you'll use.

Shop retired quilter's stashes.. they have accumulated fabric beyond their life expediency and need to down size. Shop SMART ... the fabric is perfectly good but older style but they would make fantastic quilts. Fabric is pretty cheap ... most I have spent was $3 a yard and that was for hand dye fabric.

I actually just purchased some moda quick cuts in a variety of forms, all of which you mentioned. They are very lovely, since I am getting back into sewing I thought it would be a nice place to start I look forward to learning more.

The quality of the audio improved considerably at around the 6:00 point. Your audio is usually not that great, so whatever you are doing at that point, I would encourage you to use that methodology all the time. Great content as always, too!

What a great video with such great information. I have stayed away from checks and stripes, as I find they can look crooked when sewn into a block. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thank you.

Star Brown I have the same problem with stripes, checks or plaids. I tend to not use them because I find that crookedness in a block is very distracting to my OCD!

It might be helpful to zoom in on the different fabrics, to give watchers a better look at the fabrics you are describing.

Pick a pattern. Choose the fabric necessary to make that pattern. Save leftover fabric for a scrap quilt. Why have a stash at all? I inherited a lot of fabric and I agonize over trying to use them in a project. Frustrating.
