6:00am at Catacombs (a predominately gay, mostly African-American club in downtown Philadelphia) circa 1982. Karen Young arrived and performed this song, as well as Hot Shot, to an enthusiastic group of gay men. She could not have been more entertaining and more gracious. She knew who her fans were. RIP Ms. Young....you make so many of us feel valued and loved.
I’m not sure if I would have liked had I heard it in 1982, I have only just discovered her and Deetour is one of the most played songs on Spotify for me in 2022. I think it will be the same in 2023 too along with No U Turn. Bless her, I was very sad to learn of her death.
I guess I was hoping for "Hot Shot the sequel" but instead they released this track on an Atlantic single. Never heard this one played in the clubs, no street buzz, but I did want to support her career. Unfortunately this record did not have the excitement and fierce vibe of "Hot Shot" nor did it showcase her wild vocal talents like her classic. It could've as easily been Stacy Q ("Two of Hearts") or any number of generic disco singers singing this so it was a "deetour" without much traction. Karen Young.... Vicki Sue Robinson... Sharon Redd.... all great disco divas and gone too soon . Life is like a mausoleum now compared to those happy, footloose disco daze!
It may not be to your taste but there is nothing generic about this unusual pop gem so I don’t get the comment about how it could be any number of generic disco singers on this It was released years after Hot Shot - it couldn’t sound less like an attempt at a sequel, it sounds like an attempt to make the perfect space pop record! Superb
