Highlights of the European Cup third round first leg match between Liverpool and CSKA Sofia at Anfield in March 1982. Thanks to Simon Tyce for this video.
Don't believe it, don't believe it... CSKA Sofia was the leading specialist in dethroning the current European champions: 1974 (Ajax), 1980 (Nottingham Forest), 1982 (Liverpool) was the terror of the great champions
I've recently got a poor quality, black & white copy of the 2nd leg with Bulgarian commentary. Not had a chance to watch it yet but if it's watchable I will probably upload highlights
@nikolayyy - is your version of the 2nd leg complete, or is the start missing? If yours is complete I would love to see a copy, as mine starts a few minutes in and misses Ian Rush's disallowed goal.
@@DaveWallerLFC Its the one you have. I bought it from a Bulgarian supporter of CSKA who has possibly bought it from an Englishman. The minutes with the goal of Rush are missing. Rush scored a header that was wept away behind the goal line by Velinov but the ref disallowed the goal.
Interesting to see Spas Dhzevizov (CSKA's #9) playing in midfield here. He was in fact a prominent striker. Also interesting to see Souness treated by his own medicine although I suppose it was an accidental clash. Yontchev wasn't a dirty player.
Another great upload thank you Dave👍 Why were the attendances so poor back then? Have noticed all comps there were a lot of empty seats, was it the unemployment at the time? These days there is only a 22/1 chance for members alone to get premier league game tickets!
I think unemployment was the main reason. I assume the vast scale of Liverpool's national and international fanbase now mean that we're not going to see a return to those attendances, even as life gets harder for lots of people.
@@jonathancole833 It's noticeable in all competitions though, even league games. The Kemlyn Road stand as it was, looked almost empty in a few videos Dave has posted. When you think you had the likes of Dalglish, Rush, Souness playing in front of such small crowds it seems mad! I can't say I like many of the fans we have now but I suppose we'd never have coped with attendances like that for much longer.
@@nonnayoubuzinnes1669 And to think that some people thought that the reason for declining attendances was too much TV coverage! It was even proposed that the goals should be made bigger!
Whelan's winning goal was different to how I read about it. I thought he hit the ball from near the half way line and the wind aided it on the way into the net. It was a much better goal than I thought, good enough to win a European Cup Final.

In comic strips such as 'Roy Of The Rovers', Eastern European teams were portrayed as ruthlessly efficient and robotic, even to the point of being slightly sinister (Iron Curtain and all that!).
The elimination of Liverpool on the second leg is still considered one of the greatest achievements for Bulgarian football. Thanks for the upload.

Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful game of my both favourite teams!
18:50 that was truly one of the most unique plays that I've seen haha
The subtle touch of Barney Rubble!
Thx Dave:) good job mate. YNWA:)
Bleak times on Merseyside during the early 80s. Only 27,388 there.
A young Ronnie Whelan there, brilliant video.
Love all these videos mate. Thanks . Do you have the second leg of this round by any chance ?

@@DaveWallerLFC as a Bulgarian Liverpool fan, that would make my day! Thanks, Dave!

CSKA did a job tbf kept it tight 1st leg hit us on the 2nd leg.. definitely learnt the lessons from the sessons before 7-2 agg drubbing
I think that was 6-1.

Yes unemployment played a massive part in poor crowds not just at anfield but all around the country
Maybe also the fact that it was a midweek game against an Eastern European team.

I listened to the Radio 2 commentary of this match - all I remember is Whelan's goal and the fact that CSKA had two brothers playing for them.
@@jonathancole833 Dinko Dimitrov (No3) and elder brother, the captain Georgi Dimitrov (No5). Sadly, both are dead due to health problems.

Why have sky dubbed most of these old videos with their own commentary? Tyler doing most of them
They haven't. Tyler worked for ITV until 1990/91.

The days when every European team seemed to wear white and East European teams were referred to as 'crack East European outfits'
CSKA’s home kits were red, but they had to wear white at Anfield.
@@SKa-tt9nm yeah that was usually the case. The A Team were a 'crack command team' as well
I remember 'crack East European outfits' - many were army teams, e.g. Dukla Prague.
In fact, I think that 'CSKA' denoted a military-sponsored club.
@@jonathancole833 Yes, CSKA was an army club. That's the meaning of the name. But could you tell me what crack outfits means😂?

Unusual to see Souness getting clattered for once! 4:40
