Dang. That place was miserable when I went through on my way to Mount Whitney in late September a few years back. I may need to meander down there sometime pre-spring to be able to enjoy the area without having to worry about the car spontaneously combusting.
Yes it does get VERY hot during parts of the year! You gotta go right after a big snow storm!
I made a big mistake of buying REI merino wool socks right off the bat. The things start frizzing out and such very soon. It's definitely worth the extra investment for Darn Tough. Plus the lifetime warranty on them. Smartwool for running and Darn Tough for hiking.
For warmer weather hiking, though, Smartwool has merino wool bicycling socks that are nice and lightweight but with more of a Darn Tough aesthetic. And I think they come in at about $16-$18. :)
Those Igloo containers from WM are tits! That looks like the gallon size. I go through two half-gallon ones per day, with one huge gallon-size tea bag, then another teabag I fill with creatine, cinnamon, tumeric, and Pure so I can get my anti-inflamatories and PEDs taken care of. Most of it doesn't dissolve anyway, so might as well use a teabag. Squeeze a quarter lemon in it to prevent scurvy and I'm G2G. :)
I use the MOAB2 Vents. I usually do multi-day, so I need them to not be waterproof. The area at the side of the heel started detaching right away. Five years later, I still use them for the big hikes and that detached area hasn't gotten any worse. 🤣
If you want to make those meals more packable, you can move the contents to an appropriately sized freezer bag. Usually a quart bag will work but check the instructions to see how much water you need to add. You can write the instructions on the side of the freezer bag with a Sharpie. You can put boiled water into those bags, so you can still rehydrate those meals in a bag, plus you can ziploc the top if you want.

@@TheLoversPassport The one thing of theirs I can't recommend are the boxer briefs. Merino wool has some good properties, but durability isn't among them as far as those go. All manner of runs after a month or so.
