Where is your accent from?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Literature at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and had lots of American friends, hence the weird accent. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!
Where do you live?
I live in London and have been here for 3.5 years now.
Where do you work?
I'm a Social Media Producer at Penguin Random House UK.
How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience on 3 different occasions, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel for 7 years. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).
Can you review my book?
I can't guarantee that I will, but if you'd like to get in touch, please take a look at my review policy on the 'About' page of my channel.
What do you use to film?
I have a Canon 60D with a Tokina 11-16 lens (which is super useful if you want to sit close to your camera and still get a wide shot) and I use a window as my natural lighting. I edit my videos in Final Cut X.
YOUR MUGGLECAST EXPERIENCE IS MY PODCAST EXPERIENCE!!! I would listen to it UNWAVERINGLY and then when I was done with it I was like "well, that was fun. Guess no other podcasts exist!"
Sorry to say but you were terrible at explaining
So many new podcasts to check out in the comments. Thanks everyone! :D
I love Magic Lessons by Liz Gilbert! It's a follow up top her book Big Magic; each week she takes a reader submissions about dealing with problems of creativity and tries to tease out the problem, and then the next week she discusses the issue with a friend or professional writer/artist/creative and tries to give advice to the previous reader! She has such a lovely voice to listen to and it always leaves me feeling creatively inspired and motivated afterwards :)
I'm not really a podcast kinda person, but recently I've been bingeing on Emma Gannon's Ctrl Alt Delete, where she interviews creatives and freelancers about their work and social media. It's been making me SO inspired for my blog lately and I love it!
so happy that you're a fellow Tim!!
Grey and Brady are seriously my favourites, they make me laugh so much and also discuss about important topics :-D
Yes! I have just started listening to more podcasts, so this is brilliant! Any time you have an update throw it at us. I'm always looking for new ones.
Have you heard of My Favorite Murder? It's a true crime podcast where these two women talk about murders from all over the world. People write in their hometown murders and they read them and discuss them. One of them is a comedian and it's really funny. You should give it a try! They often don't go into the really gory stuff if you don't like hearing that. Also hello fellow murderinos!
So excited to find a fellow HI listener! I listen to podcasts whilst I run and when I'm doing routine work. Some of my favourites so far are Stack Magazines, Design Matters with Debbie Millman, Charlotte Green's Culture Club, The Simple Show and Explain Things To Me. :)
I literally started listening to podcasts again today! Brilliant coincidence! Thank you for sharing :)
i highly recommend my favorite podcast, its called 'Earth to us'. its very interesting, they talk about self growth, creativity, veganism, homeschooling-unschooling and how we teach children, they talk about having side projects and goals along with your job etc. its very motivating! 💙 you should totally check them out
The best podcast is still season 1 Serial. I was so invested in it!
Ayfd 9 I recently started Undisclosed, the unofficial follow up to Serial, and I am so so happy to be back in the case of Adnan, it is gripping!!
where can you find undisclosed podcast?
One of my favs is Witch, Please! It's two feminist literary scholars who analyze the Harry Potter books and movies. It's like Call Your Girlfriend meets Harry Potter, but with 100% more Canadians and whimsy.
Katarina yessssssss
Katarina ❤️
I've listened to a couple of episodes am not crazy into it yet, but will listen to a couple more :)
Witch, Please is THE BEST. Hannah and Marcelle are 100% what I wanna be when I grow up!
One of my favorite podcasts is Pop Culture Happy Hour, it's a good digestion of what is going on in pop culture and like you said about The Banging Book Club, I find myself listening to their segments even if I haven't yet seen the movie/tv show/etc they are talking about. The three main hosts are all friends in real life, and have a good rapport with each other. Each episode features a different "fourth-chair", but they're always friends of the hosts and blend in really well. Somehow it turns out to be a really funny podcast as they go off onto tangents, and I love it!
You should definitely listen to Hello From the Magic Tavern! It's a really fun improv podcast!
I'm obsessed with podcasts currently! some of my favorites are Lit Up which is book related, Fat Mascara for beauty & Serial!
I only really got into Podcasts last year but now I'm hooked so always on the look out for more. I love Emma Gannon's Ctrl Alt Delete where she interviews a different guest every week mainly about creativity & how the internet and their careers intertwine. I also love the Pandolly Podcast which is a really funny discussion between two super cool ladies about the news of the week AND I've just started listening to Witch, Please after hearing about it for months. It's about Harry Potter and it's brilliant (but I'm sure you knew that already)
Dear Sugar Radio and Explain Things To Me are amazing and really worth a listen!
My new job allows me the ability to listen to things while I work so I have been enjoying barrelling through podcasts that have been building up. It'll be nice to have some new ones to add.
I love Sawbones so much! You put me onto that podcast a while ago, so thank you - from Sawbones I also got into Still Buffering (by Sydnee and her two sisters) which is also really great :)
There are so so many good ones :) On spotify there are tons of them. My favorite- drawn and recorded
Not too Deep with Grace Helbig is a long time favourite of mine.
Gilmore Guys, if you're interested in Gilmore Girls (or just pop culture in general because they don't always stay on topic)
To go a little of topic, I was wondering what service(s) you use for listening to audio books? And do you know if these are usable in the Netherlands? And any other advice you have, would be very much appreciated.
I really enjoy your videos, groetjes Yvonne
My favorite bookish podcasts are Get Booked (you send in a request and they recommend you books) are Dear Book Nerd (it ended a few months ago, but it's about answering listeners' questions). I also listen to The Jillian Michaels Show and Eat Your Kimchi.
So happy you mentioned CYG! It energizes me the same way.
I assume from Sawbones you already know about the other McElroy/Max Fun podcasts, but of all of them "Interrobang" is my favourite. Also "Alice isn't Dead" is a great surreal mystery story you might like. "99% invisible" showcases fascinating design stories, "The Allusionist" for word lovers, and "Reply All" for all sorts of internet based stories and reports.
Thanks for this! Would love another video from you on podcasts in the future if you have more recommendations!
Sawbones is totally my favourite! I guess I might add Stuff You Missed In History Class, which is two women, well, talking about what it says on the tin. They're really funny and go into interesting detail about big and small stories. They also make a bit of a concerted effort to reflect women in history, which I definitely appreciate. Judge John Hodgman is my "perfect commute to work" length podcast and I find myself talking about the cases with friends. Love your work! Thanks for the video.
I've been listening to serial and I love it!
I had the same experience--listening to Mugglecast forever ago, then only getting back into podcasts in the last couple of years. Thanks for sharing your recommendations!
I've recently gotten into podcasts myself, but they are more of self development ones.. thank you for the suggestions, I'll be checking them out :)
You would love "stuff you missed in history class" it's amazing!!
I love listening to podcasts on my commute to work! some great ones I haven't heard of to check out. I loved season one of the Serial podcast, it was so gripping! Also recently been listening to 'Creativity Talks' which is great to get inspiration from different creative people! xxx
I have been listening to "Craftlit" for years and love it. It's definitely more lit than craft, and the craft is most often knitting, but the aspect of it that I treasure most is that host Helen Ordover is a very experienced Lit teacher who provides information and guidance for audio renditions of classics. Who knew "The Count of Monte Cristo" or "Bleak House" we're so entertaining? They are here!
I'm definitely going to check out Call your Girlfriend, thanks for the rec! I recently got really into The Adventure Zone. Three brothers and their father play Dungeons and Dragons together, and it's hilarious! Also, as the podcast goes on, the storylines become really gripping =)
Thanks for your recommendations Sanne I'll have to give some a go. I'm a big fan of The Receipts Podcast. It's by 5 women of colour who are Londoners and they talk about relationships with friends, family partners as well as themselves. I really relate to what they have to say and absolutely love it. Really enjoyed this video, much love 😊 xx
That sounds excellent, thank you :D
1. Risk!
2. Strangers
3. Call your girlfriend
4. 99 % invisible
5. Radiolab
For learning things, I really enjoy TED Radio Hour, Song Exploder, and Anna Akana's Explain Things To Me! As for more conversational podcasts, I like listening to Nerdist podcast and Coffee with Chrachel (which is my ultimate fave). ☕️
Earbiscuits from Rhett and Link is a great podcast where they interview/talk to youtubers about their lives, not so much their youtube career and it is really interesting. They don't do it anymore, but there is a backlog of like 100+ episodes I think.
Hi! Don't know exactly where to ask this, but do you have a video in which you talk about poetry recommendations? I really want to get into some more modern-day poetry.
Ladies who lunch - Ingrid Nielson and Cat Valdez talk about dating, UA-cam, managing family conflict, and heaps of other topics really honestly and openly. I absolutely love it
Yanery Ventura I enjoy ladies who lunch podcast, too.
the vulture TV podcast is really good! tv/movie critics talking about TV. they often have actors/directors/writers as guests too. very addicting
I love podcasts so much!! I would really recommend Strangers, which is a storytelling based podcast, 99% Percent Invisible, wich is about design and architecture, and The World in Words, which is a great podcast about lesser known languages and linguistics.
I so LOVE sawbones. So great. Thanks for this video!! I added to my huge list :)
Mugglecast was also sort of my podcast gateway; I also stopped for years before getting back into it much later, heh. Thanks for these recs, CYG has been on my list for such a long time. I think you'd enjoy You Must Remember This :)
Waow! I needed this!! thanks, you are great ❤
Hello Internet is the best podcast, omg! thank you so much for recommending it! i'm nearly caught up.
Great video. I don't have a long commute, so I walk and cannot read books, thus I am an avid podcast listener. My top five are This American Life (usually three stories/interviews/reports on one topic, concerning contemporary US lifestyle/politics/society with an unexpected twist each time. Also the voice of the moderator - so good); Death, Sex & Money (wonderful interviews with celebrities and common people about the aforementioned topics with a very engaged listenership who will send in clips telling her about their experiences); Women of the Hour by Lena Dunham ( feminist and human rights issues. Loved especially the second season); Freakonomics (not as scientific as you might think! As an economist of course I am drawn to the easy "how is this theory important in real life" attitutde of it); and of course Serial (investigative journalism and justice issues). Have fun discovering new things in the new year!
You should try This American Life and Reply All. They are my absolute favorite podcast to listen to. I also listen to Fran's podcast about their friendship book since I am bilingual 😊😊 love that one too!
Cool suspenders! And thanks for sharing.....
I've been listening to Hello Internet from the start, such a good podcast. Sawbones sounds perfect for my interests, I'll be checking it out.
My current podcast obsession is Hello From the Magic Tavern. Its improv comedy meets fantasy world building and its fantastic.
My favourite podcast is the Legendarium Podcast by Craig Hanks and Ryan Bruckman. They deal with fantasy books and movies!
Witch, Please is amazing. Feminism, Harry Potter, laughter and of course lots of great sound effects!
I love Banging Book Club, and Sawbones too, might have found out about Sawbones through you at some point actually. I listen to 'Make It Then Tell Everybody' which is interviews/chats with comic artists, you could try it listening to the Kate Beaton one as you like her work. I like 'Lore,' 'No such Thing as a Fish,' 'Infinite Monkey Cage' there're plenty more I dip into every now and then.
No Such this as a Fish is definitely also one of my favs
I really like Welcome to Nightvale. It's funny and weird and it's soooo amazing!
Meredith S. I remember binge listening to all of the episodes in one or two weeks (there were about 90 episodes back then) and now I'm hooked and can't wait for the next episode.
I tried to get into it, but I think it might just not be my thing.
booksandquills fair enough, it took a couple of episodes to get into. Maybe 'Alice isn't dead' is more up your street, the story line is more cohesive.
i really enjoy "stuff you should know" i like it bc you can listen in any order and they give a really nice overview and discussion of different topics. they range from actual things (like anonymous, bonsai) to different processes like immigration or the history behind passports. super interesting and entertaining material (: -- side note: idk if others do this but i love to listen to podcasts on 1.5x or 2x bc it just flows so much better for me and i can listen to more content!
My favourite podcasts: Invisibilia(NPR), Embedded (NPR), Lore (about scary folklore), Oh Boy by Manrepeller (interviews successful women), and The Ted Radio Hour (Ted talks adapted for radio).
its actually this song: Sing For Me by The Midi Mafia - (feat. Elijah Blake, Rick Ross, & The Game).
Didn't even know Manrepeller had a podcast. Thanks for the recommendation. This video and comments are so useful!
I know most of these!!!
My personal fav: 'Kevin and Ursula eat cheap' aka KUEC in the podcast-store. Ursula Vernon and her husband Kevin Sonney review cheap foods and beverages (and get progressively more drink throughout each episode) as the title implies. More about the hilarity that ensues than the food, but I love it. Massive backlog if you love it, since they've done it for almost 7 years now. Also by this creator-couple; 'The Hidden Almanac' a fiction podcast 3 times a week, for about 4 minuten long
'The History of Rome', self-explanatory title , finished, but long! Almost 200 eps.
love your outfit!
I am a huge slut for podcasts. I listen to so so many, and yeah I think it might be why I'm reading less at the minute too, it's just so easy to cook dinner, do the washing up, have a bath, all while listening to podcasts and while I couldn't necessarily be reading. Plus I walk about 6km a day minimum so it's good for that. Some of my favourites:
Science Vs - debates with the facts about things from the paleo diet to race
The Guardians Token - race and feminism etc.
Code Switch - Race, current events
More or Less - explains the numbers used in the news, behind the stats
Alan Davies as yet untitled - funny people talking about stuff
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - in depth interesting history
The Broad Experience - Feminism
The Read - Pop culture, race
Gilmore Guys - a Gilmore Girls fancast
Adventures in Roommating - Meghan Tonjes and Keith Batista
Welcome to our Poscast - Mike Falzone and Zoja
Myths and Legends - fun retellings of folklore
Black Girls Talking - race, feminism, pop culture.
As well as Banging book club and Call Your Girlfriend.
Roisin McLaughlin-Dowd I have sooo many I listen to, too. I'm probably subscribed to over 20. Mostly business personal development.
i love sawbones so much!! sydney also hosts still buffering with her sisters teylor and rileigh and it's so lovely!
If you haven't already, I would REALLY recommend you listen to The Allusionist - a podcast about language, words, etymology and all kinds of other interesting linguistic things. The episodes are pretty short, but really brilliant! X
I feel in the know because I listen to a lot of those podcasts. I started listening to Sawbones when you mentioned in a video before. : )
Witch, please is a great scholarly deep dive into the harry potter world. It's amazing!
Also Bad with Money by Gaby Dunn.
The latest podcast I've been binging is Spontaneanation. It's a podcast where Paul F Tompkins (comedian and actor, does a voice on Bojack Horseman) has a conversation with a guest using a blind question left by the previous episode's guest. Then in the second half, he and some improv comedians improvise a scene based around elements that were brought up in the conversation, set in a location suggested by that week's guest.
You can jump into any episode and are guaranteed a good laugh. One of my favourite episodes that I have listened to so far is "Ep #13 - A Dental Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona"
Great book related was Books on the Night Stand, although it has ended, a good recommendation doesn't get old . 390 awesome episodes!
also check out Within the Wires, Alice isn't Dead and The Orbiting Human Circus!
I feel like you might like the podcast Still Buffering. It's about three sisters. Two of which were teenagers in the 90's and one who is a teenager now and they just compare things about being teenagers at different times. (Also one of the sisters is the woman from Sawbones)
You need to listen to Overdue podcast! They discuss books they've been meaning to read, and the guys on it are so funny and intelligent and endearing and whenever I listen to it I'm always like "wow.... yes!" because they make some pretty good points that I haven't even thought of.
I had the same experience where I listened to Mugglecast years ago and then recently realized that other podcasts are a thing!! I do love Dear Hank and John, so thanks for the other recommendations!!
One pod I'd like to recommend is Bad With Money With Gaby Dunn !! It's entertaining and has very good practical life advice, particularly about money which doesn't get discussed nearly enough!
I know it's like going back to the beginning, but you NEED to listen to Alohomora!. It's a really in-depth discussion of the HP books chapter by chapter. Would describe it by saying that when you thought you knew everything about the series, they discover something knew and totally blow your mind off.
i'm not a huge podcast person, but the one podcast I could listen for hours is Radiolab.
They talk about everything, from social, to scientific topics. Buet the hosts interview an expert on the topics and they thread the intwrview though out the whole podcast, so you have coments or explanations as your hearing the story of the day.
I don't know if I explained myself properly, but Radiolab totally deserves a listen.
(love you and your channel, btw)
Hey I reckon as a fellow book and I'm assuming word lover that you would absolutely love"The Allusionist" personally I'm addicted. It's all about words and their uses or origins plus they're a not committal 20 minute average! :)
The Black Tapes!!
Oh, I love podcasts! And looks like nobody talk about it. I love Magic Lessons made by Elizabeth Gilbert, I like too Scriptnotes Podcasts its about writing, characters development and things like that. And Paper Wings! Love your videos!
My favourite at the moment is the pop-culture podcast SRSLY, hosted by two political columnists, Caroline and Anna, from The New Statesman, I think. They discuss cinema, TV shows, graphic novels, books, and pretty much everything I am into! Love having intelligent, articulate, well-spoken ladies in my ears every week. :-)
I love finding out about new podcasts! Im hoping to start my own one day. A few of my all time favorites are You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes, Hollywood Babble-On with Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman, and Vagina Slims' Podcasts on soundcloud her voice soothes my soul.
I strongly recommend listening to 'chat 10, looks 3' - two senior female Australian journalists discuss what they've been reading, watching and cooking. For two women who discuss politics all day they manage to fit in a lot of reading and amazing recommendations and it's hilarious and wonderful!
At the moment I'm obsessed with Witch, Please! and I also REALLY LOVE Welcome To Night Vale. It's so unique and hilarious and wonderfully weird.
Another one you might enjoy is Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, which is a project by two divinity scholars who read Harry Potter as if it's a sacred text to see what we can learn from it. It sounds a bit weird, especially if you're not religious (which I'm not) but essentially it's just two nerds conducting a SUPER in-depth (they read per chapter) and positive, generous reading of Harry Potter.
I love podcasts, so thanks for the recommendations! Sawbones sound very cool. Some of my favorites are: "My Dad Wrote a Porno" (obiviously), "Death, Sex and Money" for great conversations about things that are taboo or difficult to talk about, and lastly "My Favorite Murder" for anyone who likes true crime. It's two friends, who are also comedians, who basically just retell true crime stories to each other. Dark and strangely comforting at the same time.
How have you not heard of Witch Please !!! It's an amazing podcast, 2 Canadian friends who talk all about Harry Potter, the topics discussed are very interesting! Would recommend
I love ear biscuits & shane and friends !! definitely recommend! i use soundcloud
My favorite podcasts are: Imaginary Worlds (about fictional worlds); Nocturne (about the night and what people do and experience at night); the Myths and Legends podcast (about myths and legends); the Adventure Zone (a dungeons and dragons podcast, really funny even if you don't know/play the game, like me); Man met de Microfoon (Dutch podcast about real and almost real stories from a neighbourhood in Amsterdam. Really well made). And The Message and more recently Life After are really really good
I love'Not Too Deep by Grace Helbig and The Messy Heads' podcast (they only have two out at the moment but they've been great so far). But to be fair the Banging Book Club is probably my fave ^^
I always listen to Ladies Who Lunch and love it, highly recommend! :)
Sawbones!
Court Appointed by Sydnee from Sawbones' dad is also pretty good and similar but with Law. As is Still Buffering from the Smirl sisters (about growing up/being a teen with perspectives from a few different generations)
aah i love podcasts and i'm always looking for more so i'm gonna check some of these out! a couple of my favourites that you didn't mention are Hello From the Magic Tavern which is a comedy improv podcast set in a magical land called Foon (lol). it's extremely silly but so well done. i also like #Millennial, which is actually hosted by some past (and one present) Mugglecast peeps. they talk a lot about American politics, world news and entertainment. definitely nsfw but, again, hilarious.
I can't stop listening to My Favorite Murder podcast right now. It is somehow so funny while going over details of gruesome crimes.
My absolute favourite one at the moment is The History Chicks, in which two women discuss the lives of historical women. It's always amazingly well-researched and they tell it in such an interesting way. Some of my favourite ones are the Zelda Fitzgerald, Jane Austen, Ella Fitzgerald and Tudor episodes.
The Judge John Hodgeman podcast & Lore are my top picks!
Global Treasures Podcast is a great one to check out as well for travel/history lovers
coffee with charachel is by far one of my favorite podcast! they touch on a little bit of everything
Dear Hank and John is my fave too!:D
Philosophize This and Dan Carlin's Hardcore History are both amazing!
Welcome to Nightvale and Limetown, as well as Radiolab are my faves
oooh have you listened to witch please??? it's just swish :)
I love Dear Hank and John sooo muuch.
I have quite the list of podcasts I listen to. Many I had already been listening to on the radio when they are on NPR but some I got off a list from a blog post on ted.com that was like titled "40 podcasts to listen to during your commute". So I have old favorites I listen to regularly, some I fell in love with last year, some I downloaded last year but never listened to so going to try this year, and of course I found new ones to try out from Esquire Magazine's top 10 podcasts of 2016. Anyway this is my list of the top podcasts I just love...
1.This American Life - hosted by Ira Glass each episode is an hour long and has 2-4 stories that relate to a topic.
2. the Story Collider- collection of stories that relate to science these are usually only 20min long
3. Slate's Culture Gabfest - 3 hosts talk about movies, music, books, museums, etc.
4. Gastropod- all about food and the history of food
5. Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me - NPR's weekly news quiz show, where people are quizzed on that week's news. (Warning you will laugh)
6. Freakonomics- its hosted by the authors of the book by the same name. They discuss a variety of topics from an economics point of view such as the economics of going to college or marriage etc.
My fave podcasts at the moment are Kill The Podcast and the Man Time Podcast (which ended ages ago but it's still great). They're both comedy podcasts with friends and they basically just talk about what's going on in the world and in their own lives but somehow it's really enjoyable.
Anyone have any comedy podcast recs?
LOVE Sawbones!!
All podcasts from Gimlem studio are cool! You can listen to a small intro before you jump into it. I have started to listen podcasts thanks to them
The Campaign podcast from The One Shot network, if you like Star Wars and comedy it is a hilarious RPG campaign set in the Star Wars universe. Kat Kuhl does a great job of keeping the players, who are mostly improv comedians, heading in the right direction. There are a ton of episodes now but it's not that hard to drop in at any point. Who doesn't love Star Wars, comedy, long shopping trips completely derailing the plot and adopting space wolves with above average human intelligence?
I really like "no such thing as a fish", every week they discuss four random facts
And "my dad wrote a porno" which is self explanatory really. He reads the novel out loud and gives commentary with his friends. This one often has me crying from laughter
