Where is your accent from?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Literature at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and had lots of American friends, hence the weird accent. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!
Where do you live?
I live in London and have been here for 3.5 years now.
Where do you work?
I'm a Social Media Producer at Penguin Random House UK.
How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience on 3 different occasions, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel for 7 years. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).
Can you review my book?
I can't guarantee that I will, but if you'd like to get in touch, please take a look at my review policy on the 'About' page of my channel.
What do you use to film?
I have a Canon 60D with a Tokina 11-16 lens (which is super useful if you want to sit close to your camera and still get a wide shot) and I use a window as my natural lighting. I edit my videos in Final Cut X.
So glad to find someone else who's read Paper Girls! One Hundred Nights of Hero is also one of my favorite books of 2016.
I think this might be my favorite shade of red lipstick I've seen on you! Great video!
I need to listen to more audiobooks! They can be so fun and could help me read more, I think! Glad you had a great reading year! 👍🏽
I love these end of year videos!
Hey Sanne! I am an Evangelical Christian and I love your videos! I hope the book Oranges is Not the Only Fruit didn't give you the wrong idea about what we actually believe/how we view the world/ and the distortion of Christianity by the modern world. I am more than happy to discuss it with you, etc! Another Atwood book that I read that I really liked is The Handmaid's Tale! Which ironically is also about the distortion of Christianity!
Ooh I'm excited about Hot Little Hands. That's a book for early this year, I bought it when it came out. Shame on me. Loved Paper Girls so much and The Glorious Heresies. Oh the new Greenberg, it's just everything. Everything. Great selection of books Sanne.
I read oranges are not the only fruit too this year and loved it! Possibly my favourite of the year
It`s good to have an area like this “fetching lobon only” (Google it) where you can discover and read most of the books. It possesses a user-friendly interface and there are no errors and mistakes at all. Its an important source for individuals who enjoy reading. Have a really wide selection also. You could have a lot of things to read about.
I'm so glad to see so many graphic novels! I'm always looking for more suggestions
Didn't even finish watching the video and I've already placed an Amazon order. My New Years resolution is to read a book a week or 52 books. May not seem much, but considering the year before I only read about 10 books, it's saying a lot. I've been watching your videos sporadically for a few years now, but every time I read one of your recommendations I always love it, so I'm going to you, to kick start my resolution. I'm on book three already.
Love when you have a really good book and you just can't stop reading. But then when it ends you're like what is life
Hagseed was my first Margaret Atwood as well. Vinegar Girl looks so good (and that cover!!)
My top 5 from 2016:
1. The Century trilogy (fall of giants trilogy) by Ken Follett
2. Ready player one by Ernest Cline
3. The last one by Alexandra Olivia
4. American gods by Neil Gaiman
5. The 5th wave trilogi by Rick Yancey
Thank you for suggesting 100 nights of Hero! It was beautiful, and I've lent it to all my friends who also love it so much!
The Glorious Heresis wasn't my favourite of the year but I followed the bailey's prize through yours and Jen's videos and decided to give a Prize winner a go even though it wasn't something I normally read and it is truly brilliant.
Yes! I have Oranges are not the only fruit on my next read :)
Currently reading The Book Collector. Loving the first 7 chapters, recommended by Jen!
Thank you for sharing your favorites list! I haven't read any of these, so I have lots of books to look up on Goodreads :)
These are all a must read!!! Great video xx
Woo! Go GOLDENHAND! ;). I also love Jeanette Winterson's writing - I used her in a dissertation and uni and loved studying her work :). You should read WHY BE HAPPY WHEN YOU COULD BE NORMAL - if you've read ORANGES ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT then it'll blow your mind (in a good way)
I've had Hot Little Hands on about two TBR's now and I just have not gotten around to it! Also you're really inspiring me to pick up more graphic novels this year (: My top two books this year were both classics (well, almost), they're The Handmaid's Tale and To Kill a Mockingbird, just so goooood.
Thanks for your list! I'll have to check out Paper Girls...I've only read a few graphic novels (Persepolis, Encyclopedia of Early Earth) but I loved them, probably because you guys always recommend the very best! I have some top novels and some close to top novels. My top 4: The Name of the Wind, Uprooted, Lab Girl, and The Just City. Close to the top: Emily of New Moon, The Table of Less Valued Knights, The Secret History, and Mr. Penumbria's 24 hr book store, among many many others. This year's books were fabulous :D
We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson, I don't know if it was the timing or the beautiful writing, or both, but it's a great book about working through grief and the hardships of life. Plus, alien abduction. Weird, but cool. :)
I just finished reading Hag-Seed; it was enjoyable, and wrapped up much like Shakespeare's plays usually do.
Sanne you should list your lipstick color on your faq because it's on point.
of all of these I have read hag seed and attempted vinegar girl because of the Shakespeare connection, although I did not know it was connected that both authors did something similar. I couldn't get into it, but I've never liked taming of the shrew. Atwood though got me into reading some true life Shakespeare in prison memoirs that were very interesting, so I'm grateful for that.also grateful that that would seem to happen need to tread kind of lightly she did a very Shakespearean peace, in the way of a Shakespearean comedy, do you know I think I may have just realized that the emotions in his comedies are just as deep as those in the tragedies, really. They just have less devastating endings. I did find that hag seed shared imagery with other similar types of books, and other media, you cannot tell me that a Canadian author writing about Shakespeare in the 21st-century it's not making allusions to slings and arrows--an early 2000's dramedy that took place at a Shakespeare Festival in a town outside of Toronto. 3 seasons of six episodes each and it's pretty much perfect --you just can't. but I think that she did a good job of making it her own, and I like that she was avoided forcing a modern twist into the book
My favourite book I read in 2016 (which immediately became my favourite stand alone EVER) is All My Friends Are Superheroes. If you have not read this book I desperately plead for you to do so! It's strange, witty, whimsical, heartwarming and down right amazing. It's about a man named Tom and all his friends are superheroes. On his wedding night his wife is hypnotized by her ex, Hypno, into no longer being able to see him. So it's his journey into getting her to see him again. While that's the main premise there is so much more going on in this book and I really think that anyone who doesn't read it is missing out on something extraordinary. I listened to the audiobook of it, and the narrator has a quirky way of reading that just adds a whole new dimension. Give it a chance! IT"S SO GOOD, GUYS! And it's only 106 pages!!!
Thanks for the recommendations! I'm attempting the 50 book challenge this year so am constantly adding new books to my "must read" list. I'm mainly interested in books with the themes of feminism, sexuality, gender roles, so your recommendations seem great!
Talking of graphic novels: have you ever read Elf Quest? I loved it when I was younger, and apparently the stories are all free online on Elf Quest's website
You really made me wanna read Oranges are not the only fruit, it sounds so good, I might get it on audible!
After seeing your interview with Garth Nix I bought Sabriel to read at some point this year so thanks!!
Stoked to hear you liked Vinegar Girl! I'm a huge Shrew fan but it's just been sitting on my to-read pile for ages because I found the blurb really off-putting. Based on the stuff I see you read and love, I think you should check out "What You Call Winter" by Nalini Jones and "Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel" by Sara Farizan.
My favourite reads this year were Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and the Locke & Key graphic novel series. I seem to like ampersands
I read The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney and really loved it.
Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare really stole the show for me in 2016. Vinegar Girl seems very interesting and I really want to pick it up!
I think the best books I read this year were probably Station Eleven, Girls will be girls, We have always lived in the castle, The Outsiders and Sophie's World :) I want to read like all of the books you mentioned, but especially Oranges are not the only fruit and the Hogarth Shakespeare ones, they sound so good!
Oh man, Station Eleven! Also I love Sophie's World.
For me it was definitely Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche. Such a good read and makes you question your perceptions quite a bit.
My favourite graphic novel was DC Bombshells, highly recommend it, it was brilliant! and favourite book, which i actually read for the first time, was the Order of the Pheonix!
i literally just bought the one hundred nights of hero today! i got it because you talked about isabelle greenberg's encyclopedia of early earth, so i thought that must be great as well :-)
Favourite book from 2016 - had to be the first from the six queen series :-) So excited for the new Anne Boleyn book in May. The new Dan Brown book too.
Alison Weir
I shaved my goal list down this year because I had way too may, and reading for pleasure was something I sort of crossed off, at least as "goals"....but I just added all of these. 😅 Thank you for sharing, I can't wait to start Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit. 🌈🌈🌈
My favourite books this year were Everyday Sexism and Girl Up by Laura Bates, Americana by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Thanks for these recommendations, looking forward to more great content in 2017 :D xxx
I'm reading some Atwood right now - The Handmaid's Tale. Such a good book. For another Shakespeare retelling I'm looking forward to Miranda and Caliban by Jacqueline Carey. My favorite book of 2016 had to be The Obelisk Gate by NK Jemisin (sequel to Fifth Season).
I really want to read Vinegar Girl, I almost bought it in Libreria with Jen Campbell the other day!
Yes, The Glorious Heresies was fantastic.
Read 'Oranges are Not the Only Fruit' for class a couple years ago and read quite a few Jeanette Winterson since and my favourite is a lesser known book called Lighthousekeeping that is absolutely beautiful to read and another one I loved (though potentially even rarer) is a small book that is a witty play on Noah's Ark set in the kind-of modern day called Boating for Beginners :)
Vinegar Girl was my favourite book of 2016 too! The Taming of the Shrew is a strange one for a self confessed feminist like myself to love, but I do and actually have a shrew tattoed on my leg in honour of Katharina
If you loved the Jeanette WInterson book, I'd DEFINITELY suggest to read her "Written on the Body". My favourite by far!
Great video, thank you
i really liked miss peregrines home for peculiar children, it gave me the harry potter feeling☺
"It gave me the Harry Potter feeling" is probably the best review I could give a book :)
I only have 2 favourite books of 2016 (they're pretty much the only 2 that art least kinda stand out that weren't rereads - it wasn't a great reading year for me). They are And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, which absolutely blew me away, such a great book, and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius which I picked up at exactly the right time for me and made me want to read more philosophy and religion.
Top pick of the year for me is Calvin by Martine Leavitt: schizophrenia YA that is also a love letter to Calvin & Hobbes. Runner up is This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills. This video makes me excited and hopeful about all the reading I'll do in 2017! Thanks for making great videos.
I am so nervous to read the Hogarth Shakespeare series - I think it's so interesting and a much better idea than like Oregon Shakes Festival who are changing the actual plays - but I'm still nervous they're gonna muck it up somehow 😩
awesome video!
I love being greeted in Dutch :)
You should definitely read Sexing the Cherry by Winterson. It was my first book by her that I read and it changed my life.
Ur trending!! Whoooop
I LOVED the Glorious Heresies. I think people who liked Trainspotting would probably like it? It felt like a more murderous, slightly more grown up version!
If you are a reader, you must try website “fetching lobon only” (Google it) also. There are several books you could read here. It gives fictional or non-fictional stories, or any reading material that will help jazz up your mood. Not as tactile as an actual book, but its the next smartest thing. The organization of the books in the site is The organization of the books in the exceptional. The books there are much like a photo copied form of the genuine ones.
This is great! Kind of wish it came out before Xmas for gift purposes though. Maybe next year :3
+Amy G I also did a book gift guide! Glad you liked the video :)
When I watch your videos I always say 'hooooi' as you do it. Maybe that's creepy i'M SORRY. :___
I do too! And my boyfriend, who doesn't watch these videos, does the ending because he has over heard it so many times
Don't worry, I do the same. lol
Can u film a video where u recommend english books for beginners ?
I really can't make a top 10 because they are all so amezing but I loved: the girl online trilogy, the cirsed child, and lord of the rings. Wich isnt new but always loved
julia fastside I've been meaning to read Girl Online, glad to hear you loved it.
imMsGabbana yes, It was great! tell me what you thought about it haha ;)
So hard to pick my favorite book this year... Well uhm besides my law study books I only had time to read 2 books this year. :( So let's try again in 2017!
Love your sweather! Can I ask where it's from ? :) Btw, loved the video!
Nina is not okay, I have not read this but.. reminded me of Crabbe
