I worked there for 2 tours and suggested several older airframes as gate guards including one which had served with the 3 squadrons, eng wing refused to take on caretaking duty .One Shack was flown in but later burned ! Luckily the Morayavia museum at the former primary school southside has built up a superb collection to represent military aviation in the area and includes a complete Nimrod,Jag,all the Raf rescue helis,F4,Hunter,JP,Jetstream,AN2,RN helis, rare V bomber noses,
Was at Kinloss from 1988 until 1997. Had a fantastic 9 years there and memories that will never leave me. The roar of the Rolls Royce engines either as the aircraft flew above or when on the test beds was brilliant. The smell of Avtur as well is something that will never leave me either. I worked in many depts including NLS South and the NMSU. Rest easy mighty hunter.
Great Video, I watched this take place from my living room. I was gutted to leave Kinloss, it was a memorable posting, hope the Army realise how lucky they are to be in this little piece of heaven called Morayshire.
I was in that area for about 9 years when my father was at Kinloss. Having grown up around the Nimrod and the Kinloss/Lossiemouth area, I really do miss it. I mostly miss the sound of the nimrod flying over the house in Forres and what it did in the area for the SAR effort. Hope to visit the Guardian in the next year or so. Thanks for posting the video.
Never got to see the guardian in place at Kinloss. It all comes rushing back when you see something so familiar and I have to say I miss it. A great vid and a great shame it is no longer there. I hope your keeping well rab.
Pity it was all for nothing. Once the base got informed of its bad news, it wasn't long until the Nimmy gate guardian was towed away to be broken up. Thankfully, the nose section survives.
What an insult and a sad end to a great aircraft that had years of operational life in it, less than two years as a gate guard and then just scrapped and destroyed like some old leftovers.....
I had a ride in a Nimrod in 1993 when I was an air cadet. David Cameron made a 1st class cock up by scrapping the Nimrod's thus leaving our *ISLAND* nation without a maritime patrol aircraft!!! I only hope someone persuades the government to purchase the P-8 Poseidon......
We are, these were a mistake to even consider upgrading over buying an off the shelf solution. They were £700 million over budget and 9 years delayed. Think about how much we could have done with £700 million in the defence budget in 2010. We'd probably have kept ark royal and the harrier.
No it wasn't, it was 4.5 years late INTO SERVICE . Is that seriously your argument? The Typhoon had to be designed, tested and built from scratch not to mention the delay from the politics and was only 4 years late . The Nimrod MRA4 was an upgrade programme, the fusalages had already been built decades ago and they still hadn't been delivered at the mark that it was 9 years overdue.
The problem was that none of the fusalages were built to a common standard which caused no end of issues. Had that not been an issue the aircraft would have been delivered on time and probably be quite good in comparison to the other types of the time.
Hi if you can make it to Coventry Airport West on a Saturday you can get almost unrestricted access to No 32 for a small donation of £2. Great video, thanks for sharing

Loved it there as a kid.

A labour of love and respect for a grand old British built lady and the crews that flew and maintained her.

Worked on this aircraft for most of the 90s.
One word....Questor!
Sad to see her retired.

Lot of Tax money there.

Aliasify The Typhoon was 14 years late and how many £££ over budget!

Aliasify Probably would have been cheaper to have converted a few Herky Birds. I think Lockheed did actually propose a Sea Hercules.

Beautiful sad video. A real pity for the airplane.
Great aircraft, sadly missed 😢
