I was a result from the one child policy. As far as I know I was left on the street and I don’t even know how I got to an orphanage but I did. I watched this and I cried. I know 10 other girls who were adopted in the same group as me from Hubei and we still keep in touch. We were adopted in 2002. We are all gonna be 19 in 2020. I wanna find my birth parents but it’s gonna be slim to none.

In 2011, my wife and I adopted twin, 15 month old girls from China. It was the single greatest thing that I will ever do in my entire life. I could cure cancer and it would not be a better. My children are brilliant, smart, respectful and above all - happy. Very happy. This movie is very personal and very disturbing to me. As someone who lived in China for approximately 5 weeks, I know first-hand about what this moves shows. Trust me, it is 100% accurate.

Just watched this documentary, it really shock me. I am myself born under the one-chid policy, however, lucky enough to have a brother who is one year younger. The documentary matches a lot from stories that I have heard from my parents and grandparents. My mum was forced to be sterilized right after giving birth my brother. My family also paid an expensive fine for having my brother. However, I didn't know that we are already the lucky ones until I watched this documentary. As a girl in the family, growing up, I'm always upset that my parents were giving more attentions to my brother only because he is a boy. And my grandma's name is "bangdi" which means "bring a brother". All of these are accurately captured in this documentary.

One of my best friends and colleague, was that second child. His father was an engineer and had to take the decision to escape to Latin America with his first daughter and his wife pregnant with my friend. Fortunately, his mother could cope with the long travel while pregnant and they were able to settle and my buddy was born here and not in mainland China. Now he is a great entrepreneur and a family man, with 2 kids as well. I’m really grateful that him and his family could escape this terrible fate

Watching this trailer has brought me to tears. I was born in China in the late 90’s. And was abandon at a police station and sent to an orphanage. According to my parents, when they adopted me, I wasn’t in the greatest health, physically and mentally. In which I have struggled with both growing up. I ended up being adopted with 13 other girls from the same orphanage in 2000 and we have kept touch with each other over the years. As I have gotten older I have done a lot of own searching. I have been going through my own papers to see what I can find. And found a few interesting things about where I am actually from. But nothing about my birth family. Which makes me sad because I know I have family there. And who knows they might be trying to find their lost daughter but nobody would ever know. Finding them will be hard because there is a lot people in China but I won’t stop searching. The one thing is that I don’t hold any resentment towards them because they made the choice to save me. If they didn’t I wouldn’t be here and have the life I have today.

Back in 1997, I met a man on a train who said he choke his just-born second kid to death in his bare hand, due to the One Child Policy. At that time I was so shocked not only what he did, but the quiet and accustomed face given by the other dozen audiences surrounding him.
BTW I am Chinese and the only kid of my parents. At that time, my parent would both lose their job if they dare to give birth to more than one kid. I should have had a sister, who was aborted, 30 years ago.

I was born in 1997 and my family is really different from others because I have 2 older sisters. Every my classmates were shocked when they knew this fact because it was already rare to have two children in a family, it's almost impossible to have three. As far as I know, there was 1 or 2 times per year that someone from the Family I Office would check every family in the town and if this family got a second kid, they fined a lot and even took away the furnitures as punishment. So I used to hide at my home or my relatives' house to prevent from being caught. But later, it's not that serious and we three grow up normally and healthy.

Despite all the heart wrenching stories, Chinese government's decision was rational and need of the hour. In Asian cultures specially India and China, marriages and breeding children are extremely important irrelevant of your economic situation and living conditions. Even if you are a begger even then you are going to marry another begger and breed 10 children who would assist you in your begging profession. Advancement in medical science and decrease in mortality rate, gave rise to this situation. Within 70 years, people in India and China produced 1 billion people each.

Food matters... You're right... But the hunger is due to mismanagement of government and not because of depletion of food...
I don't think I've witnessed a shortage of growth in rice wheat and basics crops n India...
There are farmers selling their commodities at a cheaper price ... I never saw anywhere in the market a shopkeeper saying regularly for 5-6 years that there's a shortage of supply... But he says that he wants more and more customers..
So I think it's the mismanagement by ruling leaders which is blamed on people..
And what about those killings in the womb of women... If a person has 1 child girl... And second he wants boy..?? What he will do ..
China has taken back is policy of 2 child btw because they know in future they'll be lacking manufacturing crisis like Europe and America...

Such a shocking and eye opening documentary. The most amazing point for me is that how many people in China just simply adopt “policies” and justify their actions by “policies”.
Previously, based on my interests, I tried to talk with different Chinese people and indirectly infer their thoughts about their government (mostly educated ones, some of them highly educated). Most of them are not aware of their history, the extent the government control, and the need for a more-open society. I understand that they are happy with economic developments that happened in China in the last three decades and feel a national pride. But to think your country to be equal to a party, its leadership, and its policies is something that is not understandable for me.

Most environmentalist praises China for its one child police. Even my professor is who use to teach at Harvard commends its effort. There was a period where the western government were forcing contraception policies upon developing nations ( India ) in exchange for aids. China didn’t come up with this policy on its own which is ironic. Look into your own history there are often many sides. It is easier to blame one instead of understanding the situation. My own family had to abort due to this policy. Even with its policy lifted now lost Chinese only want one child because it is simply too expensive to raise more than one.

The film not only demonizes the one-child policy, but also beautifies traffickers, describing the phenomenon of female infanticide and abandonment of female infants in rural areas as something that has to be done under the pressure of the policy, but also pulls a family of farmers who have eight children on a minimum living allowance to pretend pity. The director has also been guiding the interviewees to speak black Chinese. I really trembled in the cinema. The audience was basically foreigners. After watching this film, I really understand why European and American society has such a big prejudice against China.

I come from north china, and live in city, my place is not terribly like it. I think most happened in village. And Chinese old cultures ‘ boy can follow family name; and Prosperity of descendants, that means the family is strong.’ So The average family has five children, or more. I don’t agree director said ‘ how much can a child eat? That’s not just one family child, , that’s whole china family, one family have 5 children, then every child will have another 5 children, China's population will be more and more. When a mother gives birth in a hospital , you want to protect mom life first ? Or child first ? Actually even if Even if all children can be born. Many children will still die because of insufficient supplies. If no the policy, now the news will be that A large influx of Chinese refugees into various countries. ‘ The policy idea is good, just’ one child ‘is too less, at least ‘two children’ will be better. The government should increase the supervision of subordinates.

this documentary is very good. it doesnt boil it all down to one agenda, it actually explores all perspectives of those who carried out the policy's orders and those who were victimized by those orders. forced sterilizations, forced killings of fetuses, finding dead babies under bridges. the ethics of such acts being done out of nationalistic and collective interest fall too far between, "its a population war" vs "i had an individual choice". no, the choice was automatically politicized because the law forbid it. the social and cultural norms only served to undermine the absence of choice even further, and boys were favored because families thought it was the only way to save their history and perserve their legacy. still, although this slightly changes my previous position about the policy, i wish they would at least consider the consequences. some of the ex officials sounded quite unapologetic, putting the ethics of their individual actions aside and using the same old propaganda filled excuses of "national pride and preservation". but then again, their entire lifes worth integrity and morality was basically being destroyed by the ccp, although they were praised endlessly, lots of people probably look at them with horror and disgust.

Saw this in Chicago. SPOILER ALERT. Liked it for the most part. One thing that was strange was the people interviewed knew this was a law and still had a baby. And they knew the entire government would go after them. I found that being dumb and inviting suffering to your life. Also they thought it bad that orphanages would adopt out babies to western families. But in the same breath discuss how baby girls would be left on the street to die full of mosquito in a few days. Adoption seems better than death but I guess not to them. Finally I found it interesting when they were able to track down these adopted children in the west and they DIDN"T want to talk to them. The Chinese families were hurt by this. I saw nothing wrong with this. You're a girl that almost died and someone said they wanted you in the west. It might take time to look back - if ever. Overall it was interesting but nothing major revealed. I guess you can say they took the microscopic view vs the global / national view in this movie.

Okay... I've known the two sides of this story for quite a while now. It was inhumane to deprive people of their reproductive rights and in so many places this policy had ripped families apart and even resulted in infanticides. That said, as a girl hailing from a southeastern Chinese city I'd say a generation of young females were given the chance to live a totally different life. Families that would've practiced the century-old favoritism towards sons had to accept they got a daughter, forced to reexamine their attitudes. Those only-daughters were afforded education and career opportunities beyond expectations. Btw just speaking from my experiences at uni, at least half of Chinese didn't limit themselves to one child under the policy. Public servants and people from a certain handful of provinces were more than likely to be held against this policy.

Released on January 26th 2019, One Child Nation is an fascinating American documentary about the effects of the One Child Policy in China. It was directed by Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang with interviews from various members of Wang’s family (her uncle, aunt, mother, grandfather and brother), ex-human traffickers, former village chiefs, midwives, state officials, and artist (Peng Wang, Yueneng Duan, Tunde Wang, Jiaoming Pang, Xianwen Liu, Huaru Yuan, Shuquin Jiang, Brian Stuy, Longlan Stuy and Shuangjie Zeng). Wang dives deep into Chinese society to shockingly discover the impacts of the policy. She learns about the common child infanticide of the time, the human trafficing as well as the forced abortions and sterilizations. As well as how the current Chinese people are affected by their trauma.
I thought the documentary was very well done. Wang showed the common opinions and general events in China at the time, as well as more specific stories of those affected. For example, the mechanics of the One Child Policy were explained. She showed how women were forced to be sterilized and their possessions and houses were destroyed, which was done by family planners and government officials. Wang introduced the Chinese concepts of the “population war”, as the country fought economic hardships and felt the need to reduce its starving population. Furthermore, we saw the cultural phenomenon of how boys were more valued than girls, who were more often abandoned. She also explained the “International Adoption Program” and the matchmakers, how abandoned babies were trafficked and almost 130,000 were adopted internationally. In addition to this, Wang showed us specific stories, examples and perspectives to help us truly resonate with the events. She spoke to a rural midwife who shared her experiences with forced abortions and sterilizations. The midwife had traveled from town to town where they had taken women and made them abort. She remembered how the pregnant women had screamed and tried to run away. However, the midwife learned to recognize the pain she caused. Trying to make amends, she now helps hopeful couples have children. Wang also showed the story of how one twin from a poor rural family had her sister taken away from her under the One Child Policy. This really allowed the watcher to understand the trauma and pain the policy put these families through. However, the documentary did feel a little biased as Wang didn’t really try to understand why some Chinese families were supportive of the policy. And the policy makers reasoned for implementing the policy in the first place.
In the end of the documentary, Wang showed us how, across all interviews, there was a collective sense of hopelessness and resolve by the Chinese people toward the policy. They often felt they “had no choice”. From poor families to midwives to state officials, they all shared this feeling. Finally she showed how China is currently encouraging people to have more children as a result of there now not being enough children. I thought this documentary was very well done with lots of interviews and perspectives. I like how Wang explained the policy and situation in general before diving into specific, more intimate stories (like that of the midwife and the twin). In this way, I was able to really understand and absorb the extent of the impacts of the policy (both generally and intimately). My one critique would be to hear more of the rationale behind the support of the policy. I felt like we heard that some people liked the policy, but we didn’t really get to hear in depth why. However, I do understand that Wang’s goal was to shed light on the trauma of the policy and in that I think she did a good job.

Well. As a Chinese who's born and raised in China myself. 70% of this film is true imo. The one child policy destroyed many people's family and hope afterall. However, in reality most of people in smaller cities and rural areas will just pay a one time tax if they had 2 or more children (non-twins). The people in the city will just straight up do the abortion when they have second child by accident. The 70s-90s was a very dark time for Chinese people. But the policy has been slowly fading away since 2000. Matter of fact, now China is even encouraging people to have a second child, especially those who has no siblings. I guess the government realized there's a huge population drop in my generation which is causing shortage of labour already.

I was born in 90s under the one child policy and I’m a girl. I’d admit the policy did violate human rights to some point but that was the best way to control overpopulation because of the resource shortages and economic issues during that time. What are you expecting if China didn’t do it? Over 5 billion population or even more now? Then there would be another ironic movie coming out and sneering at the population? I know it feels sad to see families abort baby girls but that was not the problem of the single child policy and it didn’t happen everywhere in China. I was born in a small city but ppl didn’t have any judgements on either you had a boy or a girl at that time not mention nowadays. For the families like in the movie, what if they have baby boys, are they still gonna abandon them? This movie was too biased and limited bc it only focused on the remote areas in China where ppl with lower income, not much educational background, and paid less attention to birth control. Why would you give birth to another child if you don’t have enough money to support the family already? That’s irresponsible! It’s gonna make the life even worse.

The documentary was about the one-child policy and its effect on the population of China. The director, producer, and narrator Nanfu interviewed Chinese citizens from all walks of life. She interviewed parents who had to give up or abandon their children, including her aunt and uncle. She also interviewed her mother, who was one of the few who was allowed to have two children. Nanfu also interviewed from the other perspective, talking with family planners and doctors who aborted children, sometimes as late as 9 months, and sterilized them. Nanfu also got multiple perspectives, she talked to one family planner who did not regret her actions, and one mid-wife who regretted her actions so much that she no longer aborts and delivers baby\ies, but instead now does fertility treatments for cheap to atone for her sins. This contrast was interesting to me because it was two people in very similar situations who felt very differently afterward. It seemed quite strange to me, that someone wouldn’t feel guilty, or even possibly could chase a woman and forcibly sterilize them and cause them to induce. Nanfu though, expertly explained the culture at the time and how the government’s propaganda caused people to wholeheartedly believe in the one-child policy. Despite having different reactions to their actions, both women felt they did not have a choice in their actions. Interestingly, an overarching theme in all of Nanfu’s interviews is that the people felt like they didn’t have any choice in their actions, whether they regretted it or not.
Another interesting factor the documentary brought up was how the one-child policy was monetized. The one child policy had a horrible effect on all children, but a disproportionate effect on girls. Families wanted sons to carry on the last name and legacy, so families would abandon their daughters so they could have another child which could potentially be a son. This allowed the one child policy to be monetized. Orphanages would hire people, (trash collectors, midwives, etc) people who roamed around a lot and could easily pick up abandoned babies, and pay them money (around 200 dollars) if they brought a baby to the orphanage. The orphanages would then put the babies up for international adoption, which brought in a lot of money. This showed me how corrupt the government was, by not only forcing these horrible situations but also profiting on it. They also blamed it on citizens instead of taking responsibility for baby trafficking. For example, Doan and his family for baby trafficking even though they were getting paid by the orphanage to do so.
I like how Nanfu brought up all these different aspects of the one child policy. She didn’t just focus on one thing, but instead talked about why babies were abandoned, the propaganda from the government, journalism on the one-child policy, midwives and councilmen’s opinions, and what happened to the babies after they were abandoned or adopted. The documentary, while focusing on the horrors of the one child policy, also brings to light the good people are trying to do as well. For example, the couple Brian and Long Lan formed an organization that works on matching babies who were internationally adopted by orphanages with their birth families.

Please be objective and critical thinking about it. The one-child policy has its own goods and bads. However, from the trailer, it seems to stir up some emotional empathy to those who suffer from the policy. China and the U.S. are culturally different, economical different, and idealogical different. You cannot just judge another person's life and decision from your own 'universal' standpoint of view. I agree that the One-Child policy truly did have huge negative impacts on Chinese people, especially the rural area of low-income people, but that doesn't mean it is absolutely evil and bad. I hope this documentary could be objective and speaking out both the pros and cons of the one-child policy, not just how bad it was! Otherwise, it seems more likely American propaganda toward China, in my opinion. Anyway, I'd love to see the content of it.

I don't understand why so many people complain about policies and government but don't complain about these horrible parents. Anyway, these parents don't have any ability and money to raise their children . If there is no policy, they may keep their children as workers ,they will live in ignorance and poverty for the rest of their lives. And the only thing they can do is reproduction. One child policy was always mentioned in Western countries. But you never mentioned at the same time, the Chinese government also said Boys and girls are same. The consequences today are caused by old ideas and selfish parents. Not government. And I really want to tell you, nobody has the real rights to judge the things they don’t familiar with. Is there anyone who has a minimum idea about economy/ecology/anthropology? You can write a email to a professor in these filds and ask their opinions.

I'd like someone to explain to me how my uncle managed to have 3 kids under this policy as a rural villager outside Xian. And then there are the human interest stories featuring common Chinese families that casually mention the 2 or 3 other siblings in the household. Recently, a poli sci study revealed there to be a large number of unregistered children. Scofflaws seem abundant. Let's face it, China has historically been more about quantity over quality when it came to family planning. The one child policy forced families to invest in the one (or two in cases of rural families where the 1st child was a girl) child - better education, higher aspirations, focused resources, greater ROI. Many a Chinese families would perhaps still be mired in generational poverty if not for this consolidation of family resources.

Personally, I think it is the deeply rooted belief that boys are more valued in China might be the root cause that makes girls lose the chance to live. As a documentary, it'd better cover the whole population to avoid sampling bias. I, as a girl born in 90' in a big city in China, has enjoyed resources and attention from the whole family because I'm the only child. I said this only because girls CAN live better or worse under the one-child policy, and it depends on the family's actual socioeconomic status and its beliefs towards gender equality! Let me ask you a question - Which comes first, gender discrimination against females or One Child Policy? The purposeful confusion of gender inequality and the one-child policy has earned this documentary plenty of rage, empathy, and tears from the audience, while it also explains why the documentary somehow seems biased, especially when it chose only to tell all the pitiful stories of girls, largely ignoring good sides the policy has brought. I saw the One Child Policy as an institutional policy that had to be conducted in China, considering the explosive population increase by the time when OCP was carried out. However, I do think One Child Policy might be detrimental to individual families and should be considered a deprivation of reproductive rights as well.

it is, though. a lot of people were known to give away their babies, abandon them, or straight up kill them when they were born female. your singular experience does not dictate the experience of the rest. for example, incestual pedophilic rape by male relatives is rampant in my own country, and luckily i have not experienced that (or know anyone that has), but im not gonna flat out say "ah, i didnt get raped by my uncle/older cousin, and none of my friends have, so it really doesnt happen in my country !!" that logic is just plain wrong. china is a big country of over 1 billion people, so it's a careless mistake to assume that your personal experience is shared by everyone.
this document simply highlights the fact that the OCP worsened the gender inequality (both literally, as in the gender ratio; and figuratively, as in misogyny) by making people prefer to have sons if they had to choose what gender their allotted "one child" would be.
while i agree that these people mostly didnt have a choice both because of the law and the discouragement of critical thinking by the propaganda of the government in the past, i still agree that it was wrong. i eat junk food but im not going to try and justify junk food and pretend its healthy because its not. we can acknowledge that bad things have happened without painting people as evil. "hate the sin, not the sinner", as the saying goes, and this documentary is merely showing people what they dont know.

  • @jefferywang6063

Hold on, it's limited to one birth per family, not one child. If you had twins, you wouldn't have to choose between one or another, you could have both. I know this because my mother was a doctor in China, she was familiar with the birth thing, my sister's birthdate was even moved back 4 months so she could go to school a year earlier.
The one-child policy was not meant to be harmful, it was meant to solve a population crisis that led to food shortages.

The one issue I have with this release is that it has a very strong, if limited, bias against those in the USA that fight for the rights of the unborn child. I do not support blanket prohibition on abortion, but at some point the child has a right to life, and this is totally ignored in the limited comments at the end of the piece. It is unfortunate in that it lessons the weight of the main point in the presentation.

@Lucas Muller Many people don't know that Indian government took an initiative of mass sterilization campaign for male counterparts around 1970(which is a good initiative in my opinion)in order to control the population of our country. Although the campaign failed miserably due to the incompetency of the administrator who were not able preach this to common people. Also due to lack of awareness and education there were mass hysteria among the citizens of our country.Family used to hide their male members to escape from vasectomy it was a tough time as my father recalls. Thus my point is you cannot blame this on a single entity entirely when the problem is massive it is deep rooted specially in this part of the world.

@Lucas Muller The one-child policy was true, and there were indeed many people who choose to have an abortion. But what I mean was there is a problem in the perspective of this film. The real documentary should include a macro view of the background and environment of a thing. The angle of this film is so limited, what kind of idea it is trying to spread? Just like the chaos in Hong Kong, many media used their cameras only aimed at the police. They only took the self-defense and resistance actions of the police. But for the robbers’ looting, setting a fire,
attacking police and innocent passengers, trying to grab guns from police, so many terrible acts were all ignored and just let go. Ok, these media were recording part of the truth, but they were not recording the real world, see the full picture, please!
