This is definitely an analogy for living with mental illness. "Eat well, take your pills, and you should be fine!" But actually it just keeps getting harder and more confusing to do what you have to do to be fine.

Titus Gamedromedon - most times the side effects for the meds are as bad, if not worse, than the mental condition they're supposed to treat. Hell, I voluntarily went on an anti-depressant while going through custody battle for my son and the shit had a bad interaction with my pain meds. Nearly killed me. Came within minutes of having an aneurysm AND heart attack.... id rather have simply dealt with the depression and just hit the gym a few more hours a week instead of downing some bullshit meds, of which the prescribing doctor later said "oh, well side effects like that can happen." Yeah....side effect of meds for depression is death..

I've never had depression so I'm not really sure but there are two kinds of depression, right? circumstantial and clinical. Circumstantial kinda sounds like what you're describing but isn't there also clinical depression? In which your brain just doesn't produce enough serotonin, dopamine and it sometimes just happens without any cause at all. Correct me if I'm wrong though I'm really not that well versed in this topic.

    • @_Cloun
      @_Cloun 6 років тому +44

See here is the other thing, clinical depression is often caused by a Chemical Imbalance in the brain that you can't do anything about unless you take the Proper medication to re-adjust that balance. These things are also done Ontop of Therapy and soul searching

Admittedly, I think a lot of the theories on this game are maybe either reaching too deep or not deep enough. I think the player character may be depressed, yes, but I think maybe the cloud actually is a separate person from them; someone like a friend or family member. They tell you to take your meds and eat well, and tell you how well you're doing while you make progress. But it's actually very common for those who are trying to support those with mental illness to get frustrated when someone relapses or takes too long to get better, which can develop into outright verbal abuse or worse.
I feel like the player character started taking more and more of their medication, started doing illegal drugs to try and help further where the perscription wasn't helping, and it sent them into a downward spiral of medication dependence and addiction. The person represented by the cloud was doing their best to help, but with relapses and slow progress, they began to resent the player, using harsh language and criticising them for taking too long to do things because of their condition. Maybe I'm reading it too much at face value, but this seems both more likely and less overdone.
With the ending, it may be at least experiencing the freedom of being without the supporter-turned-abuser, or perhaps they really did die some how.

    • @lordlagomorph
      @lordlagomorph 6 років тому +38

@4:15 the level being a darker repeat of the previous one supports your theory
The cloud isn't bitter YET but it's the first sign that the medicine isn't enough to solve their friend, the player's, mental illness. It's the cloud's first experience with a relapse (be it addiction or something like a depressive episode)

What about the “medicine for mental illness” theory? I have to agree with that one the most but then again this is something that I’ve gone through and it is a rather subjective experience that’s hard to describe unless you are the subject.

I loved the game's visuals, that is absolutely its selling point. The narrative in it works well with the aesthetic as well. However, Manly's point on the last two segments is undeniable. They were way too long, seemingly only here to make the game longer. They didn't ruin the experience for me, but I got bored and that's never a good sign in a horror game. Even's Manly commentary has a hard time making Windows 95 hell enjoyable.

    • @anaju3595

I guess the long parts are also a part of the symbolism present in the game.
You feel like giving up, you don't want to do that anymore.
You got bored, and usually when that happens we change what we're doing or watching, but that's not possible for the character.
When you had the option to jump down, as the cloud was saying, it meant to show that feeling. But later we got walls, forcing us to go through thatand making this feeling even stronger.

I think (you) were suffering from depression (the cloud has become a universal symbol for it) for numerous reasons (one was doing drugs as told by the mushrooms). You did something to land you in a coma. The pills, food, and water was the IV. The keys was to get out of your coma. However, it wasn't enough and your mind was deteriorating and then you died. You went to the afterlife. During the credits, it was picture of (or attempt to be) an ultrasound. You were being reborn. -- That's one take I got out of it.
The other one is pretty much the same thing but you committed crimes out of desperation to cure a terminal disease (the skull and floating spike things) which landed you in prison. It got worse and you end up dying anyway and found redemption (or at least made peace with yourself) went to the afterlife and was reborn.
Frankly I like the first one best.

Okay, so... I don't have any clue if I'm aiming the right way, but I think the significance of the game implies largely to the medicine and the title, being OK/NORMAL. Take your medicine, eat right, drink water, and keep moving on... Perhaps the game is addressing someone taking medicine to help a mental condition, but then needing to take more over time to 'get to normal'. This leads the protagonist into a downward spiral of taking more and more medicine, threatening the chance of overdose, just to get to what they believe is normal.
Of course, this turns out to be a double edged sword. The protagonist is simply getting more out of touch with reality, perhaps even being hospitalized and getting 'clean' briefly. At the first scene in the hospital, everything sees nice and comforting. Perhaps this is a different sort of help, hospitalization, or a brief respite from the drugs. During this time, they feel better, but then return to the medicine to get 'normal'.
I believe that the end signals a final release. Perhaps an overdose, but is also suggests that maybe it was a suicide.
Many people with mental illness do require medication, but if your medication is no longer working, leading to taking more and more without feeling any better, then you need to address it. Switch medications, talk to your doctor, do something, but don't get stuck in a bottomless trap.

Somehow I feel like Cloud symbolises the voices in the protagonist's head like, at first when the protag follows the regime (eat food/pills, drink water) it's like they're confident they'd feel better but they didn't so they would find another alternative (more drugs) to forget the pain and to be normal. Instead, it just makes them feel worse and thus Cloud's verbal abuse which somehow also feels like how the protag is mad at themselves. Just a thought, you guys can correct me if I'm wrong :)

    _"What's at the end?"_
That's what we all want to know. Idk if it showed addiction - I felt like "take your pills, eat 3 meals a day, do what you're told..." are the typical things we hear every day to live a "normal" life. We try to meet everyone's expectations, ignoring that often dark cloud of _I told you so_ or _We should just go back_ or _Just give it up already._ I felt like it was the journey of a person going thru adulthood from the simple tasks of childhood thru finding all the keys of life you are supposed to: key to happiness, key to love, key to success, etc. Ending in one big huge, long, often boring, crazy confusing maze... & at the end? A bright light & peaceful blue- a return to what almost looked like an intrauterine ultrasound the end lol. Anyway in my mind, it suggested a rebirth.
I knew you'd stick it out & find your way. Great play through & commentary, as always!

Speaking of normal life.. I grew up not knowing I had autism and slowly sank away in a depression because everyone else seemed to be doing just fine living their lives and I could just not keep up with it.
People saying stuff like "sleep well, eat enough, drink enough and then you should be fine" don't realize some people just need some extra help and just are different than the rest of society. I really hope our society will become more and more accepting towards invisible disorders and diseases.
Ps. It's still a tough road, but doing so much better in life after I've accepted that I can't do it alone :)

Pretty sure Player Character starts off in a hospital, possibly following a suicide attempt given the depression context later, but not actually hinted at in the beginning. The cloud's spiel is similar to what a nurse might say. The flowers are poppies, and morphine is an opiate, ultimately derived from the opium poppy. So it may in fact be the hospitalization that kicks off the addiction (which is fairly common IRL). Fetus themes make me wonder if it was perhaps related to a stillbirth or miscarriage.
The addiction escalates (PC eventually is just looking for pills; when the blues keep going to red (the soothing high goes away) it escalates to needles, which is when the skull becomes dangerous: death is looming, heroin being as dangerous as it is. But stronger drugs are needed to stay in the blue and keep the red away. PC tries to straighten up, but despair kicks in, and the keys resemble spoons because the addiction is calling. PC winds up hospitalized again and gives in to the addiction, hence the game over and the cloud rolling in and becoming the PC. But upon death, there's a chance at rebirth -- hence the "aesthetic" at the end and the ultrasound imagery, mixed with the fetuses before implying that rebirth was the best chance.

25:20 this has given me an idea for a top-down or 3/4 view game where 2 walls are just far enough apart that when the scrolling floor changes direction, the player won't notice, therefore it looks like the walls are always closing in.

  • @LunarShimmer
    @LunarShimmer 6 років тому +50

This game resonates with me. It's definitely about depression on some level. All the self-care stuff the happy little (rain)cloud tells you to do at first - "Eat well! Take your medicine! It'll be okay, just get to the end!" seems like a very simple thing when you just say it. But depression doesn't work like that (usually) and your inner thoughts get more and more fucked up and self-loathing, like when Cloudy wonders Very Subtly what it's like at the bottom of the abyss.
Idk about the ending. If it's not AfterlifeTM, then maybe it's a hopeful sign that things _can_ get better. It's not a sure thing that they _will,_ but they _can,_ and then you end up in... a snowy place with pyramids everywhere. Seriously, idk.

Do you think the cloud sort of has something to do with helicopter parenting? That's sort of my first impression.
Overtly monitoring their child, being angry when they want independence of any sort, constantly "helping"
and then complaining about how tired it makes them when dealing with it.
[When I say child, I'm thinking young adult as per the time period of the game, though]
I think it could be father/son, mother/daughter, any combination, but my first impression
is that it points most to a narcissistic mother obsessed with her depressed son's
    "dependence" on antidepressants.
7:18 WHY IS IT SO DARK = Why are your thoughts so dark? What's wrong with you?
7:29 WHY AM I TIRED = Why are you pushing me so hard and making me take care of you
8:19 You should stay here = I don't want you to leave home because I'll lose control of you [It's in a school, so
the parent still sees the child like a little kid]
The area around 10:00 with the fog contains a giant figure with a hand hovering over the character. It makes you feel small.
The other small person looks like a doctor to me, as well. The empty white room feels like a hospital.
10:54 Literal interpretation of self-destruction, self-hatred? And drugs, obviously. So clearly some form
    of drug addiction.
Thought: Without the cloud around, the "screaming" dialogue may possibly be memories of what the narcissistic
parent said to the child at some point? And since they're repeating in his/her head, he/she starts to believe that
it's their fault that the incidents occurred and everything said is true.
14:39 Extremely good example of how narcissistics behave
One moment they are kind and draw the abused person in.
The other they are hateful and venomous and want them dead.
15:51 Maybe an example of the child feeling their identity intertwined with the parent and referring to the
    two of them as "we"
The red room around 20:00 and onwards is definitely the child's inner thoughts. Perhaps the white/black cloud was the
parent, but the pure black cloud is the despair and depression of the child, echoing back the abuse in their mind. I don't
know how to describe that part. I think it speaks for itself, perhaps.
Maybe the son or daughter then attempts to overdose on drugs, and is then saved by the helicopter parent and
sent to the hospital. The lights flashing on and off could represent the days and nights passing by. The parent
could be blaming the child for doing this to themselves. Hence: 33:53 I TRIED! STOP! Hurry UP!
35:58 Though ultimately the child successfully passed away, successfully killed themselves and passed on to heaven.
The ultrasound of the baby in the ocean could possibly represent being reincarnated peacefully, and the ability to live a new
life without the fear and hatred destroying them as of before.
That's just what I got out of it. I find all of the theories everyone wrote super interesting, though.
This one was kind of genuinely horrifying. It makes the viewer feel weird. Then again, I don't really get jumpscare games, so.
But dang. What a sad story :c PS1 graphics were awesome, though

I feel like I should have dropped acid before watching this. It would have been one hell of a ride.
Edit: finished watching, and while I still stand by my joke of taking acid and watching this, I do want to seriously attempt to analyze what I think the “story” was about, so SPOILERS AHEAD.
First off, I agree with the assessment that this was basically a giant allegory for someone living with depression/anxiety/general self-doubt, and resorting to substance abuse as a crutch to make themself feel better. For a little while, it works. Things seem normal, but as time goes on, this person needs more and more drugs just to function, to be “ok”. As the dependence on the drugs gets worse and worse, we start questioning if this is really worth it. We feel trapped, with no way to break free of the cycle. We try to make positive changes and actions, but they are few and far between, and even though you do feel better for a little, things quickly deteriorate again. Towards the end it seems like you overdose and die, and are finally at peace. As for the end credits, the background looked like a recording of an ultrasound, so maybe you are reborn and given a second chance chance for a better life? I could be way off base, but that’s what I got out of this.

Depression definitely is involved in this game, but I think it might be of a postpartum kind. Or the kind that falls after a miscarriage? I'm more inclined to believe the first though, considering that the babies seemed to show up way more often in the beginning and then almost disappear entirely from the game later on.

i think the story of this game is like some mental illness like anxiety and depression and with family problems too. I think the cloud represents someone like a parent and the baby represent his baby or sibling and yes the cage does symbolizes that they can't escape the mess and their illness at the same time and that is why the mazes looked insane at each level.
the medicine, needles, food, and water is what a sick person needs most of their time and medicine can make them feel better but at the same time question their reality a lot of times and just focus on themselves and always their surroundings.
the eyes, that we see in the game A LOT OF EYES, is waht the character feels like. being watched every second. being judged or is it all in their head.
the hallway must represent something but it didn't look like a school nor home since ,as an architect, the space between two doors looked small so it might be at the doctor's clinic.
the pyramids might mean something too. in the mazes they are hard to see and the charachter somtimes leaves their problems behind and just ignore it for a while until they slip and fall down in their problems again. sadly this happens to most sick people too
the keys represents happines or to escape the reality since it gave of a strange glow and a purple color too. since it was hard to find keys in that maze, and then you find one you feel sudden joy that everything will be alright and mostly judged on the cloud as it gave you negative feelings while searching for the six hard af keys.
and i think thats it and sorry for mispelling too much ugh not used to the keyboard yett
    eeeeeeeeeeeeehh subscribe to me chu

This game seems to show a lot of things related to infants. The fetuses, the ultrasound-like ending. This may very well be a game involving such things as drugs or depression issues. Maybe I'm overthinking things, maybe it's all just a symbol of reincarnation or the afterlife, but what if this game had something more to it. The loss of a baby, or perhaps, the loss of someone's own childhood. Both could be a way towards a grim path.

It’s easy to feel OK, by eating your pills and feeling physically fine.
It’s hell to feel normal, like you’re happy to be alive and feeling mentally stable amidst the struggles of everyday life.
That’s why we overindulge in things like drugs; to feel OK is easier than feeling normal.
That’s what I think this game is an analogy for.

Have a (mental health?) problem. You get help. Following instructions. Eat, take your medicine, be on your way to good health. Things don't improve. They get worse, escalate. The "adviser" gets frustrated that you aren't getting better. As things get progressively worse, adviser does as well, "You'll be fine" "This isn't right" "What's going on?" "If this was ANYONE else they'd be fine by now" Blame is placed on you. You keep moving, looking for any relief. Fighting the bad thoughts and influences, you look for the end of your pain.
But honestly, this game is so abstract, I dunno.
