They've had many disputes over this, one of which led to him taking the mantle of Nightwing and moving away. He doesn't hate bruce or the life he's leading, they are on great terms and will absolutely help each other out. this separation over a disagreement just broadened his perspective, and now he doesn't just want to stay stuck as a part of someone else's legacy.
As soon as Damian accused him of wanting to be Batman, Dick set him straight immediately. Damian just sees big brother seemingly easily taking on the mantle without hesitation or resistance so he just assumes he always wanted it. Damian doesn’t actually know anything about Dick other than Bruce took him in when his parents died in the circus and that he was the first Robin. He is 16 years older than him and is a full fledged hero in his own city doing things his way, and has been a hero for 18 years dealing with everything that goes with it from being a kid at the grown ups table to leading his own teams and losing friends along the way. Damian doesn’t get that Dick is only wearing the cowl here out of duty as the eldest son of Batman, regardless of his own feelings.
The gall behind that first remark, "You'd like that, wouldn't you?" Damian may be the Blood Child, but Dick was the first true Son, and Bruce the father he needed. He had no right to dsre claim, Dick would be happy if Bruce was dead.
Nightwings character arc is one of my favorites because he acknowledged everything he hated about Bruce and took the mantle in a completely more understanding and passionate approach.
I honestly love this - because its the one time Dick straight up tells Damien how it REALLY is - not how Damien THINKS it is - Damien sees the cowl as a prize to win by being better - he wants it and THINKS he deserves it . In reality the cowl is somthing bruce wouldnt wish upon even his worst enemies - and im pretty sure that IF he had too choose a successor it wouldn't be either of them - It would be Jason . The one person whos been through enough to handle the responsibility.

Adding 'Red' to his old one doesn't count. Damian is Bruce's son and Ra's Al Ghul's grandson...but too much of him is defined by his bloodline. He would show the most growth by doing the one thing neither father figure is capable of doing - living a normal life. Jason would show the most growth by understanding then embodying Batman's ideals. I'm sure Bruce would be happy knowing that 'his greatest mistake' becomes a worthy successor.

Taking up the mantle was literally the last thing Dick wanted but, if I'm remembering the events of Battle for the Cowl correctly, it sort of became "I guess it has to be me". Jason, bless him, is not a good fit for Batman and never will be. Tim is an excellent strategist and fighter, but he has been known to justify his plans and schemes no matter the outcome to others if he thinks they're the best - he's honestly too much like Bruce. Personally, I think if DC weren't cowards then they would've given the mantle to Cassandra. She's the best fit, and her moral code is possibly more rigid than Bruce's.

Apparently, althought the death of Jonathan Kent was retconned a couple of years ago and even the death of Superman’s mom was retconned in Smallville. She did die later, but she survived the explosion of Krypton Honestly if I had super powers I would use them to help people. I always wanted to be a fire fighter as a kid to save people and the reason I never became one was because my parents pretty much begged me not to because they didn’t want to risk losing me. If I got super powers I would become a Superhero without having a sad backstory, simply because that’s who I am
I forgot how annoying Damian could get, he came a long way since his first appearance. Still, we shouldn't forget he is just a child. He is upset , worried and frustrated at his father disappearance. He is emotional like any kid and his jealousy and fear of losing his father that even him might not realize makes him being a dick to dick. That doesn't excuse anything but that is understandable. My boy Nightwing still as good as ever though, set the record straight right away , telling Damian directly the how and why he doesn't want it and that he is worried to but act out of duty.
