I played 20 years ago when I was 13, and so little did I understand about the story, especially starting from disc 2. All I ever seek was the cool gears, great effects and battle system. and the music got me hyped. But now I understand much better. A very cruel fate for fei lacan elly miang, but only those who did not lose heart in the crisis can be the true hero to truly save and free humankind in the real way

I heard someone accurately describe the problem with games these days "Great graphics, shallow storytelling." You can tell in the older games that the developers had fun with the games they created. If they didn't, why would they have such a big game filled with tons of deep symbolism that you never see in games nowadays? Its because people like Takahashi really wanted to make a masterpiece out of the stories they created. Final Fantasy has frankly gotten stale :/

Xenogears Infinity mode is awesome. When playing this game back in 1998 at 15 years old, never did realize how much a master piece this game really was. Didn't age well but it's still my favorite game of all time.
Although the Zohar may be responsible for all Ether and gear and power on the planet, Fei and Elly, being the beings that they are, do not need to rely on the power of it because they essentially ARE facets of the Wave Existence....so, like Xenogears, they can manifest these powers on their own without a Master Generator because they ARE the power, touched by the Wave.
Not so much Elly. Fei is the only one that still has his powers after the end of the game. She became just another human, and her reincarnation cycle ended. Fei sadly will go on reincarnating, only now his future selves won't have have an Elly to hold in his arms anymore.

That is why the Xenogears continued to operate once the Wave Existence was gone--Fei himself serves as its source of power, being something of a lower domain physical duplicate of the Wave Existence's raw power. Elly not so much. She was reliant on the Wave Existence. Miang also won't be reincarnating again. Y'know Ouroboros? That was Miang. When it died, Miang was completely erased from existence.

Not really, it had the budget of any final fantasy games. Problem is it needed MUCH more to finish. Combine that with the time constraint, Disc 2 happened.

If you don't mind me adding onto understanding Grahf and Id, I'd like to point out the Zohar Modifier is the reason why Fei can change into Id. MGS's & ZOE's artist is Yoji Shinkawa, who didn't even start working on console gaming until 1994, the year AFTER Xenogears came out, and started at Konami on Policenauts.

No I wonder I couldn't get any of this plot in 7th grade. Hell, I don't get it now!!! But in a nutshell...young boy(1st generation Fei/pokemon) on the spaceship saw the Zohar machine-thing that traps "God's" will inside. 1st Gen. Fei wishes for a mommy, the machine reacts to the wish and creates 1st Gen. Elly. So in effect, some disturbing Oedipus complex thing going on...or something. I have no fucking clue lol
True. Elly was meant to be a caretaker (mother) to Abel (Fei) but later would became his lover! It’s the whole Devouring Mother complex - pretty toxic stuff.
No, Perfect Works states that Abel and Elly's relationship was that of a boy and its mother, nothing more. It's after the 2nd incarnation (Kim and Elly) that it turns into a romantic relationship. But in some turn yes, it has its Oedipus complex since all Contacs (Abel/Kim/Lacan/Fei) and Anti-types (Elly) remember their past lives.

I think Id is the result of the Contact’s second contact with Zohar. Otherwise he would/should’ve appeared back with Abel and Kim when their Ellys were killed. It was only Lacan, after Sophia (Elly) was killed and he was manipulated into seeking Zohar by Myang, that Id was able to manifest itself from that point on.

It’s just that their lives were not noteworthy enough to mention or affected the subsequent ones to large enough degree as those four have. Myang had over 600 versions of herself but she’s different in that as soon as one dies another is taken over; similar to how Lacan later evolved to do. No version of Elly ever learned to do this. She always seem to be born around the same time as the Contact.
Ok so, having played this game decades ago and coming back to it now, this seems like a TON of plot exposition that is being manifested in just GALLONS of word vomit. The game is just saying "BLAH!" trying to get it all out at once. I had to pause, go back, re-read the text over and over again and It's all just so metaphysical and non-sensical that I am turning on it. It's just not as good as I remember.

@@barricade8957 you're right actually, my apologies. Maybe Shinkawa was inspired by the designs in Xenogears, who knows. But thank you for answering my post more then 3 years later. Kinda makes me happy inside. I've always had a soft spot for Xenogears. I played this game while I was in college and it has stuck with me ever since. Maybe one day we'll get a true awakened remake of this great game!

True. Elly was meant to be a caretaker (mother) to Abel (Fei) but later would became his lover! It’s the whole Devouring Mother complex - pretty toxic stuff.
No, Perfect Works states that Abel and Elly's relationship was that of a boy and its mother, nothing more. It's after the 2nd incarnation (Kim and Elly) that it turns into a romantic relationship. But in some turn yes, it has its Oedipus complex since all Contacs (Abel/Kim/Lacan/Fei) and Anti-types (Elly) remember their past lives.

I think Id is the result of the Contact’s second contact with Zohar. Otherwise he would/should’ve appeared back with Abel and Kim when their Ellys were killed. It was only Lacan, after Sophia (Elly) was killed and he was manipulated into seeking Zohar by Myang, that Id was able to manifest itself from that point on.

In E.C. 9475 (3392 years later) Lacan is born around the same time as Sophia, Elly's next reincarnation
In E.C. 9500 Sophia sacrifices herself to destroy Merkava (which is being used by the Solarian empire as its main warship), causing Lacan to turn into Grahf a year later when he makes contact with the Zohar
In E.C. 9981 Fei is born, along with yet another Elly

It’s just that their lives were not noteworthy enough to mention or affected the subsequent ones to large enough degree as those four have. Myang had over 600 versions of herself but she’s different in that as soon as one dies another is taken over; similar to how Lacan later evolved to do. No version of Elly ever learned to do this. She always seem to be born around the same time as the Contact.

Ok so, having played this game decades ago and coming back to it now, this seems like a TON of plot exposition that is being manifested in just GALLONS of word vomit. The game is just saying "BLAH!" trying to get it all out at once. I had to pause, go back, re-read the text over and over again and It's all just so metaphysical and non-sensical that I am turning on it. It's just not as good as I remember.
