That was a great lesson. I like that you give several melodic and harmonic approaches.

My grandfather would play this song for me all the time, it’s very special to me. Thanks for the breakdown!

Great lesson Jeremy. This is a special song for me. It got me started listening to and loving jazz music. I was 13 years old when I first heard it. Check out the original recording on the album “Return To Forever” with Joe Farrell (sax) and Chick (Rhodes electric piano)…beautiful!

Found this after reading my recently aquired copy of Jazz Piano Fundamentals Book 3: Modal and Modern. Guys - if you don't have a copy, get one. Pages 18, 19 and 20, where Jeremy details the different modes, contain the best explanation I have seen to date.

Like the video before watching it! !🥰 I like this album. The album cover is the most consistent with the songs I have ever seen. {sometime ago} this song was on my single rotation a while ago!

I guess I like the various different options you try. As long as any other instruments agree somewhat with what you've chosen, that's good by me.

You can play just about any natural note (except for F) in the first chord, but for heaven's sake NEVER play the G because that note totally kills the color of the chord. It's really an Am11 (no G) chord. Also instead of G7sus4 I would play a pure G (not seventh or sus). For the Bm7 I would use B11.
Going a little deeper one could construct the song from modal chords based on fourths. The first chord being A-E-B-(F#), the second being E-B-F# etc. Model chords with parallel shifts up (Bb) and down B. Even the F, G, A resolution could be F-C-G followed by G-D-A resolving into A-E-B
