Many years ago, I flew DC-7s as air tankers dropping retardant on forest fires.
They had 4 R-3350s, 3400 HP for takeoff, 2900 continuous.
This engine was designed beginning in 1935 and the first one ran in 1937. Back then there were no computers to help with the design, no calculators. If close was good enough, you used a slide rule. If it needed to be exact, you wrote out the math on paper.
they had 18 cylinders, 2 rows of 9. The bore and stroke were both somewhere around 6 - 1/4", compression ratio was pretty low, a bit less than 7:1. They were supercharged, the blower was 2 speed, low for under 12,000' altitude and high for higher. They had a gearbox in the front, 16 crankshaft revolutions to 7 prop revolutions.
They had 2 magnetos for ignition, the mags would produce around 200 volts which fed a coil by each cylinder that boosted the voltage high enough to fire the spark plugs. They had 3 power recovery turbines, each one fed by 6 cylinders. These were turbines that the exhaust went through and turned a shaft that was connected to the crankshaft via an oil clutch. They were not turbines like in a turbocharger but rather they deflected the exhaust to produce torque, therefore very little back pressure. They added about 500 HP for takeoff.
They would burn anywhere from 1 to 4 gallons of oil during normal operation. A common joke was 'Fill it up with oil, and check the gas'.........The oil was 80W for summer and 60W for winter. They used 115/145 avgas (purple gas). Each engine would burn about 80 gallons per hour during normal cruise.
The original ones had a block made from magnesium but this was a bad idea. If the block ever caught fire (rare but it did happen), it was impossible to extinguish and would burn through the wing structure and of course, result in a crash. They weighed about 2700 lbs. The ones I flew were steel blocks and weighed about 3700 lbs.
A typical takeoff power setting, on a hot day, was around 57-59" manifold pressure and 2900 engine RPM.
The prop was about 14' in diameter, each of the 4 blades was about 7' long.
If they were treated well, they would perform well and last a long time, the TBO (Time Between Overhaul) was somewhere around 2000 hours. They were not tolerant of any kind of abuse though, push them too hard and bad things would happen..........

I’m glad I started flying when radials were still in service. My first flight was in a DC-6 with Double Wasp engines. It was at night and I sat where I could see the fire in the exhausts. Turbines are more reliable but lack the romance of the radial.

My Uncle flew a DC-6, all the way up to a DC-10 with American Airlines. His favorite was the 707, but loved the old radials. When he flew in WW2 it was 4 Wright radials that got him home safe in his B-17. Great guy, taught me how to fly.

My grandfather was a B-29 mechanic in WWII. He was A&P so he knew those planes inside and out. I once asked him why radial engines are so stubborn to start. He said, "well, all the cylinders get together and form a committee and they take a vote on whether to start or not."

The lower cylinders accumulate oil in them while at rest, which can foul the spark plugs. Those become unfouled at different rates, contributing to the uneven running until it burns off and all cylinders fire smoothly.

@Common Sense Realist It was common to enrichen the mixture in combat as well as set the RPM via the govenor to nearly red line. This would allow the pilot to only use throttle to control manifold pressure and hence engine power output. Engine durability and fuel efficiency would suffer. But, the duration of combat was generally rather short, rarely more than 15 minutes. After the end of combat, more cautious settings would be used for engine speec and mixture.

These are radial engines, as such the cylinders are arranged in a circle. The cylinders at the bottom have all the crankcase oil just on the other side of the combustion chamber. Oil seeps past the piston rings into the combustion chamber and burn away at start up. Every radial engine will have blue smoke (sign of oil burning) at start up.

I did not know that engines were "gay." But seriously, normally when you see that much blue smoke you think the rings rings are bad. Do these radial engines leak oil into the bottom cylinders after being parked for a while?

You have an interesting way of spelling "starting," as in "straing"? Great video, though!

It seems to me that multiple engines with this tremendous output of horsepower would pull the wings of an aircraft forward with such force as to rip them right off of the aircraft! Additionally, a single engine aircraft should be “stretched” to the point of disintegration. I am a pilot.

When each cylinder has the displacement of a normal economy car engine, you burn some oil. 😂
Also these were all built in the ‘30s-‘40s, plus the lower cylinders on radials are below the oil level of the crankcase and will get oil inside, which burns off during startup. Once they’re warmed up it’s fine.
