- The people of Inishbiggle off the coast of Mayo believe a cable car to the mainland could alleviate the isolation they endure.
Other islands around the west coast of Ireland are far better served boasting licensed ferry services with regular links to the mainland. The only mode of transport available to the 60 inhabitants of Inishbiggle is a currach (a traditional Irish boat). This is frequently an unsuitable means of crossing the hazardous 500 metre channel to the mainland.
There are no amenities whatsoever on the island and resident Liz Calvey notes
We exist here, we don’t live, we have no social life whatsoever, mass on a Sunday is actually the only social occasion we have.
For the inhabitants a cable-car linking the island to the mainland will alleviate the isolation and could attract more residents and visitors to Inishbiggle. Padraig Calvey is convinced the proposed cable-car would bring immeasurable improvements to the quality of life on the island as you could
Come and go dry whenever you wanted.
In spite of making a big effort to relocate to the Island, if the cable-car is not constructed, Liz Calvey and her young family will have no choice but to move off the island, as they can no longer put up with the isolation.
There are currently only two young couples living on Inishbiggle and she fears that if the young people leave
Then the elderly people will be left, with nobody to look after them and time will take care of the rest.

Well. we are still here on the island. with a licensed ferry service, emergency helicopter service... and well able to enjoy a quiet life as they did way back. And a cable car is as subject to bad weather delays etc.

I heard they are sending 150 asylum seeker men to the area from, various places like Nigeria Somalia, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Armenia and Georgia, bit of diversity will be good for the area

right on, personally i prefer the isolation of the desert i live in, takes me an hour and a half to reach the big cities for shopping, then i happily drive back to my quiet home, watching this is interesting dialogue, i see in the comments the island is still inhabited, you live in beautiful country by the way, regards from nevada.
Whereas it's enjoyable having the space to yourself, the problem with being alone is always what happens if you have an accident & can't alert anybody? But that fear is true if you live alone in a house even in a busy area, the house is your island, and lovely it is to feel free, but if you fall & nobody is coming by for weeks....??? That is the only issue. I guess on an island even an alert gadget would be no good ! Same with those who go mountaineering in remote places - if you fall - how long before you are considered 'missing' & somebody looks for you ! We are a bit of a liability with our love of 'freedoms' !
@@veronicaroach3667To be fair that’s also the issue in some parts of Co. Mayo that are on the mainland. For instance, Belmullet is the most isolated town in Ireland, if anything serious happens it’s 90mins to two hours down to the hospital in Castlebar.

I recall dealing with a very well known Architect n London some years ago, he asked where I was from, and I explained that I came from One Man Island, he asked where that was, and I explained off the west coast of Connemara, he asked me to show him on the map where the isnad was located, I show his a tiny black spot about 500 out in the Atlantic, this gripped the attention of several other people in the office who all came to look at the map, then someone asked my how many people live on the island, I explained just my uncle and when I come to visit he has to get into the boat that I sailed in and row back to the mainland, the island is only big enough for one person to live on at one time. everyone in the office wanted me to bring them to have a look at this far off distant little island way off the west coast of Connemara

I live in a small town in the state of Maine in New England, USA. i moved here from Boston. The people here in New England are very suspicious of newcomers, their families having lived here for generations, and they treat me like an isolated island unto myself. I haven't made a real friend in over 3 years since I moved here. But, in some way's I enjoy it. Plenty of time to think and not be bothered with any unnecessary distractions, and it's peaceful.
Sometimes, having neighbors, and not being lonely, is not all that it's cracked up to be.
I'm a natural 'loner' and having those aggravating neighbors is something I dread ! BUT in times of trouble we still need another human to rescue us !

Ridiculous waste to spend public money on infrastructure to sustain a few people. I guarantee those same people would complain if private companies wanted to bring a factory or something to the island. Irish people always want more public services, more wealth but complain if they're ever put out by development.

@@shane6115 yea but relating to Ireland the old joke is if complaining was an Olympic Sport we would be sending Lorry loads of people over to compete in that and the worst thing is most of this complaining doesn't even lead to anything hell a bad one was a few years back Apple wanted to open a building in Athenry would have provided 3,000 permanent jobs but NOPE project was canned by local outrage yea 3,000 permanent jobs would have brought so much investment to that region but yea gone bye poof and Denmark ended up getting that building its amazing how inefficient ireland is at getting shit done
There's a lot more ridiculous things that the government pumps money into. NGO's come to mind. I'd give these guys their cable car over the millions spent on those any day of the week
