This report is before the 20 Million. Back when this report was made the new album debuted at number 8 in the US with only 83,000 copies sold. That is absolutely horrendous for a group that had a hit as huge as wannabe, and an album like Spice which went to number 1 for multiple weeks and became one of the previous years best sellers. Sure it probably did better elsewhere, but doing well in the worlds biggest music market is a big deal when you have cracked it once before, so I can understand the talk of disappointment.
It was far from a flop. Strange thing the entertainment business, when a band is not able to outsell their previous album it is considered a flop. Take for example PSY with Gungam style, then had a follow up with Gentleman, which was still a hit, but he was called a one hit wonder, since Gentleman did not a bigger hit than Gungam style.
@MrHammadmossop1988 You're welcome. I'm afraid this is all I have. I have been going through my hundreds of VHS videos and converting short clips all over the place from things I recorded at the time.
@CherryPop026 I remember the late 1990s somewhat differently. I didn't know ANYONE who liked the Spice Girls and I still consider it manufactured dross. Guess that makes me a loser in your eyes. I can live with that.
All these fans in their feelings over those sales comments haha. Yes, Spice World sold well enough, but the problem with a hit like Wannabe and a debut album as big as Spice is they expect you to do just as well if not better. They were nowhere near flop, but compared to Spice it didn’t do as well as anticipated. They wanted a return as big as say Britney Spears with Oops I did it again. Breaking your previous first week sales record and what not.
How much more money and advertising did they need, certainly weren’t skint, so why not get those photo people to sign a deal beforehand - on publishing rights.
@1mnmfan Because they refused to perform. They refused to perform because of all the paparazzi around the stage. That's the story, anyway. If I was there I'd have been booing for the sheer enjoyment!
Over 20million albums sold... Wouldn't call that poor sales

Was he talking about the Spiceworld album?! Didn't it sell over 25 million copies?

Poor Spice Girls, getting booed off stage in Spain.
@MrHammadmossop1988 It's nothing unusual - this is just a snippet I taped off the TV onto the end of a VHS cassette 13 years ago.
