With my extensive roof rack experience I can add that unused roof racks aren't in the way of anything. We just use them when needed and ignore them when we don't. Wind noise? Ive never knowingly encountered that, but I only admittedly can't say. Even then I would need to quantify it against all of the other road noise sources which probably makes them a minor contributor with their aerodynamic shape. Speaking of aerodynamics, I did actual fuel consumption testing on my outback both with and without a full size clamshell enclosure on the roof. If anything, such a large object would affect fuel consumption quite a bit more than the rails themselves. The fact is that the clamshell hardly affected fuel mileage at all. Nearly identical on the order of 1 or 2 percent. I even drove the exact same 90 mile route round trip in similar weather, and paid attention to speed with cruise control. Unstreamlined blunt faced loads do make a difference, but not the commercially made wedge shaped ones. That being the case, there's nothing to be concerned with over fuel consumption and roof rails.

One more "feature"regarding the roof rack. Because of the swing feature of the cross bars , there is an exposed hole in the top of the side rails on each side. If you live in an area that uses salt and maybe even sand, material can get trapped inside the side rails that won't wash out in a car wash. An effective and cheap solution is to stop at your hardware and pick up 2 #7 rubber stoppers. They fit snuggly and require no tools for instalation or removal.

One note, and I saw that YOU did it, but you did not explain what you are doing and it is CRITICAL for the auto hands free tailgate feature to work. When you get your hand or elbow near the emblem, listen for a tone or beep, then step WELL BACK and the tailgate will open. If you do NOT step back. The tailgate will NOT OPEN. Many owners do not know about the tone, and what they are supposed to do when they hear it. It is a safety feature. Subaru did not want to knock over a bunch of elderly shoppers with their power gate, so they have a sensor back there that not only senses you want in but that you are CLEAR of the gate before it is allowed to open. Great Video Alex but honestly at the dealership there is supposed to be a product specialist who is supposed to go over all of the features of the car before delivery. One really great one was turn on the rear window defroster to stop the start stop thing. They later updated the screen software to put that switch onto top screen. If you have any input to Subaru please tell them we want a real set of buttons for the heated seats. Going down a menu to get to adjust them makes you take your eyes off the road.

One other thing about the roof rack system is you can change the location of the rear bar if you want a longer span between the rails. With the star screwdriver in your spare tire area you just remove the centre of the locking pin, and switch the location with the centre screw of the rear bar. They can still be stored the same way as originally designed!

I stumbled upon it the other day and now the extension is perfect! the Forester's bars and rails are a lot less clunky-looking, and the crossbars can be removed or installed in only 10 minutes or so, if you haven't lost the Torx screwdriver that comes in the glovebox. I especially like removing them in sunroof season. (Remember Outback doesn't have the big sunroof, that may be another reason.)

I really appreciate the steering responsive headlights. Incidentally, I’ve always had a love for the French automaker Citroen (especially the older models), and they introduced steering responsive headlights in the 1950’s with the DS. It only took me 70 years to get a car with this feature! Haha!

Also rear Audio warning sensor...if you get to close to a object, but don’t rely on this better to get out and have a look before reversing.
Another feature is sports mode that gives you about 15% more power for overtaking and climbing lanes.

Sports mode only increases power at part-throttle, not at full-throttle. I've taken my '17 Forester XT to the drag strip (purely in the interests of science, of course) and both S and S# modes are actually measurably SLOWER (say, 0.5 sec and 2-3 mph in the 1/4 mile) than regular D(I) mode, because the transmission no longer runs the engine at a steady 5800 rpm (where horsepower peak comes, for my car). Instead S and S# give gear ratio shifts and the engine spends some time not a peak power.

Just traded in my 2005 Wrangler Unlimited with 90k miles for a white 22 white Outback Premium with package 13. I always said I would never get rid of my JEEP. Loved my JEEP, but it was time. Getting a little older and getting into a lifted vehicle was not a problem. It was noisy, bumpy, horrible on gas, and my wife has a bad knee so climbing into the JEEP was an issue. I know others say it's underpowered, I guess it is compared to other vehicles. The Outback is just fine with me. Drove it home and I kept up with traffic. I was able to "PASS" a car that was doing about 30 in a 45. Guess I dont need that " PUSH YOU INTO THE SEAT " throttle response. Would it be nice? Of course! But I dont need it. The screen some people hate is okay with me. Coming from an 07 Charger SXT and an 05 Wrangler, this is space age for me. My wife drives an 18 RAV4 and the screen on the Outback makes the one in the RAV look small. One thing I can say is that it's easier to navigate the touchscreen on the RAV4. But, I dont poke the screen every 2 minutes. It's set and thats it. I'm super excited with my 22 Outback Premium in Crystal White Pearl. Let's see where it takes us.
