“T.R.O.Y.” is the most impactful Hip Hop song I’ve ever heard. Crazy thing is, I couldn’t imagine it not having the 14 second prelude. Fade to black. Then that horn. That’s heaven on earth.
RIP Trouble T-Roy
Rip heavy d too....
I get uncontrollably emotional when I hear that song. Just writing this I'm catchin feelings.
Preach. I clicked so fast to say the same thing. My first time real introduction to concious rap. Just a classic.👍👍👍
You said it goosebumps heart heavy eyes filled with water
Perry, I guarantee you that you're not the only one. Very few songs take me there. This is certainly one of them.
I don't know why this song has an effect on me but it has
Facts...I tear up every time I hear it.
That Beat Will Always Hit Me IDC How Old it is That Song is Timeless
Very few beats and songs give me instant goosebumps like T.R.O.Y. I feel like that and 93 Til Infinity are the most beautiful, iconic, and almost extraterrestrial 90's hip-hop songs/beats of all time.
@@seinenwax94jr9 Bruh 93 till infinity is up there too! “Electric Relaxation” by Tribe is up there too
@@a.m.g.116 Oh yeah. All of those are iconic as well. There are so many other beats with those qualities only they're not songs that get universal praise outside of older hip-hop heads. "Get A Hold" from Tribe to me is in that same school. Beats Rhymes and Life has for a long time been mixed amongst fans of Tribe, but Dilla's fanbase since he died grows so much every year on the web that its iconic in its own right.
❤
Big facts
LONG LIFE TO THE LEGEND PETE ROCK
Along with DJ Premier. Pete Rock is responsible for a major part of the 90's East Coast Hip-Hop sound. Flowers now, not later.
I grew up with Troy, Pete, C.L. and Heavy D in Mt. Vernon. The one thing I always respected about them all was - before and after fame - they always spoke & remembered where they came from. Real men.
R.I.P Heav & Troy. One luv, Pete!
I love it when legends are still here and they give their knowledge on how they make/made amazing songs.
Best hip hop songs ever, t.r.o.y. and electric relaxation.
RIP Phife Dawg from the Zulu nation.
93 til Infinity
@@roryslaine7896The 5 foot 3.
To the one and only. Never be another. He was my brother. Trouble T-Roy It's like that y'all. And you don't stop. Pete Rock and CL Smooth for '92
Watch Heavy D's interview with Tim Westwood, he breaks down the T.R.O.Y record and how Troy died. Heavy D died a day after that interview. Crazy.
R.I.P to both
Let this sink in...Pete Rock was only 21 years of age when he produced this timeless classic track. Pete Rock is the epitome of the statement: "Powerful Creativity Comes From A Broken Heart." He was able to masterfully channel his heartache into what I consider to be one of the greatest tracks in all of contemporary music, regardless of genre. I remember going down to my college town's record store to get the T.R.O.Y. cassette single and I couldn't wait to unwrap it and pop it into my Sony Walkman. As I walked down the street back to my dorm room that day, I damn near cried because I knew as a 19 year old that I was listening to a classic that I would play countless of more times for the rest of my life. #TheGoldenEraOfHipHop
Pete rock. Salute from L.A. Me and my boy bumping that in 1992. 22 years old. Rollin to Crenshaw high to play ball because our boy had the GYM keys. Props. Soundtrack to my 20's. One of them.
One of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. It's a family classic, I have mad siblings. We all love this song! I met PR in 2005 (Milwaukee) and told him to his face. That his music moved me and created positive energy. 💯😎
I remember crying so much when Troy passed; Heavy D n the Boyz was my most beloved crew and when this track came out I was like now this is a memorial a tribute.
Respect the Jazz artist who created the music they sampled from.
That goes without saying, and half of this segment is basically paying respect to how great Tom Scotts "today" is
@@Dru_Won Not necessarily. A lot of artists sample and never acknowledge the artist whose music they sampled from.
@@venitakbennett-bonaparte1986 not in the world pete rock is from , and him & kweli are definitely showing tom scott respect here
@@Dru_Won Okay. I heard you. Respect.
@@venitakbennett-bonaparte1986 yessir pete and kwali im sure have the upmost respect for Tom. Its thanks to cats like these that i even know who great musicians like tom scott are, so you gotta give it to them for that!
Amazing song. Love Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth
My sisters youngest son left us to soon... Troy 4 ever in our hearts.. xxx
What I always liked about T.R.O.Y. was that intro beat that lasts for 15 seconds. It goes so well with the Today sample that for years I thought it was the same song instead of a separate one he sampled.
one of the greatest songs, period
Pete Rock, one of the greatest producers in music ever.
Its hard to make it thru this song without tearing up and wiping a few tears. Things were so real back then and we each had family members who played the same roles as this song detailed. Very emotional, RIP Troy and Great dancer and person. I loved when my Cleveland Heights high school band played this at basketball games, the bleachers would go nuts!!! Great times, thank you
I listen to this song while working out. Phenomenal song and lyrics.
One of the few producers I can hear rap.
I agree. A underrated song to me where he kills it on not only the beatmaking but the verses as well is "In The World ft Large Professor" off of the High School High soundtrack.
“In The World” is a clinic for how to filter samples and bass lines.
@@willisdynamight4881 💯💯I always loved his use of wah-wah in his beats especially on "Get Involved" and "Searching"
@@seinenwax94jr9 Absolutely! P.R.’s wah wah game is the meanest!
not at first..lol Heavy D don't curse he was horrible...lol but he got better when he got on Down with the Kings With Run DMC
This and Passing Me By from the Pharcyde are my two favorite rap songs of all time.
I first heard T.R.O.Y when I was 15 (it was early 90s) and I was off school with an illness. I raided my brother's CD collection as I was bored to distraction and found "Mecca and the Soul Brother". I listended to that album over and over and over with track 10 being the highlight of course. Absolutely blew my mind.
Thank God for being sick and big brothers
I remember hearing "T.R.O.Y." for the first time.
I still get chills. That track helped me get through a rough patch in my existence.
#RESPECT
Melodic, Introspective, Haunting, and Celebratory, T.R.O.Y will forever be a hip hop classic. RIH to the king.
"Never be another" 🎵🎵🎵
You can see Pete getting choked up when mentioning Troy, even at the end referencing CL's rhymes on the track
Sample, Lyrics and production were like no other! Pete Rock & CL Smooth Solidified Hip Hop's AUTHENTIC Style of music!!!
Shout out to NBA Street Vol 2 for introducing a new generation to this beautiful piece of art…. 🙏🏽
i swear man, that game is the reason i know this song.
Facts that’s how I heard it too
That game introduced me to that song. I played the hell out of that game as a kid
Every time I play T.R.O.Y., I take a trip back to my old days of being a little girl of age 7 going on 8 in the summer of 1992, growing up in South Central Los Angeles and hearing this on 92.3 The Beat for the first time. That core saxophone break still does something to my soul whenever I put on this song. Better yet, I'm about to play it right after I hit the 'send' icon on this comment 😊
T.R.O.Y....ahhhh, takes me back to the nostalgic days of rap and hip-hop culture that was guarded by the gatekeeping NYC in the early 1990s when rap was at its creative peak.
And this is coming from a 44-yr old Detroiter.
I love this song. Trouble T-ROY died accidentally. Great samples of songs.
One of the Greatest songs. RIP T-Roy and Heavy D
Greatest sample ever, the catchy horn riff is like a few seconds in the original, amazing.
T.R.O.Y. Top 3 beats of all time, can’t wait to see the whole interview
I was just conflicted about this song 24 hours ago. It was tragic that this brotha died, but I absolutely count not imagine Hip Hop without this song. I was wondering if I was bugging thinking that this song was one of the greatest songs Hip Hop has ever produced. I feels good to see that I'm not alone in my thinking.
Best beat ever 💯
(whatttttttttttttttt)...👍😎🔥
Greatest horn sample in the history of hip hop…
Absolutely timeless song✊👏🤘✌️👌
Man I can't wait for this one. Legend.
This song touched me so much first time I heard it. The production, lyrics, everything. A masterpiece of a song. Honestly one of the best songs ever made in any genre. A great way to honour lost loved ones.
Bruh he bout to cry. RIP Trouble T Roy
One of the greatest songs of all time in any genre is something I have always said about this track. Be well everyone.
The Legendary Pete Rock! Such a huge inspiration! And I agree with Talib! One of the greatest songs of all-time!
Listen to this.. Trouble TRoy. This is gold right here! Bless up Pete Rock C.L Smooth. I blast this track almost everyday.
LOVE THIS SONG TILL 2021 INFINITY
Large Professor also used the 'Today' record on Slick Rick 'It's a Boy (Remix)', but what Pete Rock did with that sample is a complete masterpiece.
P gave it to Pete. He put him on. The story is P even helped Pete make the beat. Its A Boy came first in 91. P gave alotta beats and loops away to his so called "friends" but never got credit...
They reminisce over you…Authenticity at its best…”FOR REAL”…
Always loved T.R.O.Y. The original music sample from is Beautiful! I could always connect with the music and the message!!! And what a beautiful way to honor someone who meant so much to you!!!🙏🏾🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🔥
Pete Rocks instrumentals are stilled played in my house. Best instrumental of all time..
One of the best records of all time. Not just hip-hop. By one of the best to ever do it.
90 to 96 was amazing time to be a Hip- Hop head .
BLESSINGS ALL THE WAY UP #RIPTROUBLETROY
R.I.P. to Trouble T-Roy. He would have been still alive right now, if he would have been 54 years old.
One of my most favourite songs ever. Even the original song its taken from is beautiful but the way it was flipped is stuff of legend.
I'll never forget this song, every time it came on...
The best hip hop song of all time. I love you guys so much.
Summer 1992 my mother dropped us off in Minden, Louisiana to spend the summer with my grandparents. They were old school and over protective. We weren’t allowed to leave the yard so i would watch videos ON tv ALL DAY. Minden, LA is about 30 mins from Grambling, LA and that Grambling sweatshirt that C.L. Smooth wore in the video made me feel like they were right down the street. That song came on the countdown EVERYDAY! It’ll always be special to me and take me back to some of the best times in my life. I’m only here because that song was just on repeat in my car lol
Couldn't agree more. One of the greatest songs of all time. Regardless of genre.
Big Up and Big Respect to Pete Rock my best hip hop song ever many thanks to Pete Rock an Cl.smooth I grew up to these guys am 52 know and have to play this every time am down Rip Troy.deep song love it still Bless from u.k
Love that song
This song is beautiful!!!
T.R.O.Y and Sometimes I rhyme slow was everything!
Doggie Diamonds said he was on Tour when the song came out, and everyone in the room listening was crying. Seriously crying, and couldn't say a word.
I'm still hoping that Premier vs. Pete Rock album comes out where Primo said the first single was beat he did with Pete rhyming on it
I’m 40 years old on August 5 and it’s a blessing I made it! This song was and is part of my growth into a man. I just banged this after leaving my son’s football practice!
The track was a dope Classic my shit92 uptil now. From lagos Nigeria 🇳🇬💯
Rip! Troy👤
R.I.P. to Trouble T-Roy 🙏🏽
I break down and cry every time I listen tot that track, and that was before I even watched this clip. Just an amazing track.
Oh I love that song since 90's..
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I love Heavy D &The Boyzz ❤ I still cry listening to certain songs 🙏🏼I can relate to most of them
I always loved Pete Rock rapping always wanted a Pete Rock album just him rhyming over his own beats would of been so amazing
Agree
Beat maker..but could rap when needed to
My idol. I Love pete !
T.R.O.Y. Is one of those records that you can’t mention Hip Hop without mentioning . It’s so classic. I love how it’s a comenmoration to a friend of theirs that past
Still bumping that album to this day💯
Greatest of all time
*THAT BEAT SOUNDS SO NOSTALGIC, IT TAKES ME BACC TO MY YOUTH, MY HOOD, SUMMER 91, GOOD TIMES...BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE*
EVERY time I’ve been at a live show and a club DJ puts this joint on the place goes bananas! Never fails! This is definitely written into the DNA of hip hop!
This song is my B’boy soundtrack. I quite often tell people I listen to Pete rock just to flex on them. The song really cosmic.
My favorite song of all time! The first song on my playlist in the morning!! 🖤🖤🖤💗
God bless you People's Party and Uproxx. Can't wait for Monday.
im 44 yrs old and this song is brand new to me everytime i hear it.... CLASSIC
I loved that cut when it first came out, alotta my people were getting caught up back then........ that's all I had was these raps to keep my head up and stay strong...........🤨🤨🙏🙏✊🏼✊🏼
Can’t wait for this one. Pete Rock is a hip hop legend
One of the best songs ever!
The starte of the song ya already know whaz commin lovley..
Its crazy... T.R.O.Y. was the song that made Hip-Hop *make sense* to me. Before that, it was a thing that just happened around me. I remember songs getting occasional radio play like Paul Revere, or anyone who was any sort of car bass early adopter banging Children's Story. I remember the impact of RUN DMC, LL, Kool Moe Dee, Kane, and Rakim. I remember how popular Kid & Play and Hammer were. A lot of the culture was going in in the background of my life, but I didn't embrace it.
Then this video came on one night. Had to be when it came out, because it was shown in its entirety and not the condensed for time thing videos usually get after a bit of rotation.
I can't explain how or why, but the sample, the rhymes, the video's aesthetics, even the time of night... it all just clicked. It was kinda like that moment in Blues Brothers at the revival tent: "THE BAND!!"
I had a lot of catching up to do with things I only had a passing interest with beforehand and the then-current contemporary joints. And it was all due to this song.
One of my favorite hip hop joints man just make me feel good, make me think about my family members dope song
Mad excited for this episode
That 1st Blacksheep album is one of my all time favorites.A bunch of dope beats and Dres came with the flows and ryhmes.
Can't wait to see this full interview
Greatest hip hop song ever and my #3 favorite song of all time from any genre
One of my favorites
*No one wants to stand in front of Pete Rock in Verzuz.*
K-Def, Havoc, or DJ Skratch
Premier or Dre or possibly Tip but the latter stole shit so Premo is the main cat
@@burningspear90 what'd tip steal?
@@aiedynwoods3499 beats he heard at Pete Rock’s basement, IMO definitely didn’t push for Dilla to get that billing on Janet Jackson, but in the world of hip hop just like back in the day (up to late 90’s) using another rappers lyrics or style flow was biting, hearing a producers beats they looped or record they found was stealing. Nowadays none of that matters anymore. I acknowledge Tip for what he contributed even if I don’t resonate with some of the shit he has contributed. He’s solid. But yeah listen to PR interview on Spotify P3 soul, you’ll hear about the incidents of theft. And everyone knows about the Dilla Not being on Janet for production credit but Tip is all over it for songwriting. Anyway it’s what it is.
Swiss and Timbo missed it, Pete Rock and Dj Premier were doing versus in Japan long time ago. But Pete Rock can only go with Madlib now.
Legendary... Pete Rock is a mastermind/Architect when it comes to Music
One of the most beautiful things about this song is TROY is ever present, though most of CL lyrics are about his own family. Its the only song I know if that when it comes on, everyone stops talking....
Pete Rock aka Mr.Underrated👍👍
I understood T.R.O.Y. as a good neighborhood friend of Pete Rock & CL in the song. Sounds like Trouble T-Roy was a fightin' MF. 💥👊🏽
I love this song T.R.O.Y 🙏rip today is also amazing
