My late mother knitted and did crochet. She had plastic knitting needles and she would click them at rapid speed. It was amazing to watch mom knit while watching TV. She never had to look. She could do it by feel. She was a big afgan knitter. She tried to teach me but it didn’t work. She crocheted a stretchy red dress for a doll, complete with hat and the dress’s skirt could be fitted over a roll of toilet paper and the he doll would be in the hole. Very classy TP roll. Seeing you knitting that little bit brought back watching mom do it. Mom didn’t have a basket for her yarn she had a pouch with her balls of yarn, needles, and what she was knitting at the time all stuffed neatly inside. She never bought balls of yarn. It would be packaged in a flattened pile, I would hold the yarn on my wrists set apart and mom would take an end of the loose yarn and gradually using me she would make that free yarn into balls. I’d watch TV with her and you’d hear that tiny click click of her plastic knitting needles. They were sky blue. I used to ask her how come you never watch what you’re knitting. She’s say don’t need to. I do it by feel. When she would count her rows that’s when she’d look down. She used to sell her afghans but she kept one. Crimson and orange with tassels was the only one she kept. She also did decoupage trays for a while but knitting was her passion. She drank a lot but was always sober when knitting or crochet.
