i used to snare wabbits all the time, when i would go out in the morning early, grey crows, foxes or ferral cats would always have taken some, shites that they are, its been ages since i done it and this brings it all back, more stuff like this needed on you tube, well done!!
Thanks for the video. You make it look simple and easy. That only comes from experience and time in the field. Appreciate your willingness to share it.
my dad tried to teach me how to do this when i was like 6. can't say a retained the information but this is a good refresher. now im hungry, i might try this :)
Thank you...I bought my twine from a commercial fishing equipment store. Not sure if Canadian Tire has it or not, but I did purchase my wire there. Great to hear from an east coaster...wish you success.
Thanks for sharing. Great video and it's a very simple snare. I am new to traps, snares, etc. so I really like to see these easier snares that still do a solid job. Keep 'em coming....
I remember seeing this when i was much much younger you caused a fight between my gf and I at one point because she didnt want me snaring rabbits... Cheers keep up the good work :D
when i was really little we had a "wabbit" problem and i was reading my dads old books and wanted to make a snare, lol, i made one outta shooelaces and just tossed it on the ground flat. 2 days later i had a nice sized rabbit i been hooked ever since
Hi PavelCharles, I'm in Nova Scotia. I use the twine cause it's less expensive than the wire, it's easy to adjust the length for different situations, it also takes most of the strain from the wire. Using just wire, the snare will eventually loose its integredy and break. Yes you can use just wire, I just prefer not to, for the reasons I refered to above.
Going Hiking and trailing soon and can't wait to try this out, nothing like catching your own food for the night, some fish and rabbit over a nice fire :)... or squirrel, either sound fine to me.
I'm not sure what province you're in, but here in Nova Scotia you need what is called a "Wildlife Habitat Stamp" I think it costs about 3 bucks or something. Also you have to follow the same rules as the hunters, like hunters orange etc. Hope this helps! and good luck...
i used about the same thickness wire as you did. i set like 10 snares and like 6 or so were activated the next day... but they were broken. i could see the pull marks where the animal struggled... problem is i cant get much thicker wire without compensating for flexability
Hey i am from nova scotia too. keep up the awsome videos.great work!! you put lots of information on them so youth get lots from them!about how wide should the circle part of the snare be??? and how high off of the ground should they be??
Instead of using a steel wire for a snare could you not also use strong fishing line as it is harder to see and is more pliable? Would it work just as well? Thanks.
Dude thanks you video's has helped me allot and I put 25 traps out the other day and caught 1 rabbit and then I caught another one yesterday but allot of the traps have been almost closed to the size of a rabbits foot but why isent it catching most of them do I need to put the snares higher off of the ground?
hi ive been watching ur snaring vids and have decided to snear too as im scottish there is no snow so hard to find prints any ideas to set up snare like near burrows?
kool video, i live about 10 mins walk from a large woods so im gona try this out. i think il make about 5 or 6 snares though just to increase my chances.
I've never seen anyone use cord to tie the snare to the twig or tree. We've always just wrapped the wire around the tree. Curious as to if there's an advantage to doing it your way. Also, do you ever use a spring pole?
A good looking snare but I snared a lot of rabbits as bait while trapping in my younger years & used just brass wire or stove pipe wire. The method you show economizes on wire so I like it but on the other hand uses cordage. It also is more complicated than just wire. I prefer stove pipe wire. Either way if brush wolves find it 1st it's gone. I came to prefer .22 rifle, short ammo, keen eye & slow motion movement. Tossdart
The first half of an instructional fishing video normally does not include how to make a fishing rod, nor does a driving instructional video include how to make a car. Have a nice day.
BTW, you may not need a small game licence...Here in Nova Scotia for snaring you just need a "Wildlife Habitat Stamp" I think it costs about 3 bucks. You can check that out with your local Department of Natural Resources.
So far this season I have caught 0-4 rabbits per day...I have 20 snares. Right now I have turned them so they won't catch anymore. I will right them again once I have consumed what I already have.
The rabbit will slowly walk through the narrow space like it usually does. They take the same paths regularly. The head goes through the snare loop and it slowly tightens on its neck. The rabbit may feel this happening and start to bound faster but it 's too late as the snare tightens more and does not loosen. Rabbit passes out approx. 10 seconds or so. Does not wake up. Its actually alot easier death than if the rabbit gets attacked by a coyote or bobcat.
The sticks are put around the snare, not through it, so they shouldn't interfere with the snare at all. They're only put there to coerce the rabbit to go through the center of the snare.
It doesn't really matter if you colour the snare or not but veggies and what not would help but chopping down small jackpine tress for them to eat will do the trick but every little adjustment counts and it's also a learning experience. So try many different ways as you would like and see what works best ...
Northernpike. the best thing to do when u set a snare is get the equipment (like Wood And the snares) form a different area then the hunting side. and To put them together. and once u did that then go to hunting side. That way you dont Let the flued (that comes out of the wood) warning the Rabbit that Goes down the trial. and u leave the enivoriment in a Better state. Other then that it was a great vid.
You should be able to set snares up near burrow openings using the same priciples shown in this vid... Rabbit droppings are a great indicator of the presence of rabbits too. I wish you success :-)
@northernpike56 hey northernpike56 i wanna get into trapping beaver and rabbit snaring. do you no any good ways to trap them in the summer time? 1 second ago
The best thing i fine for rabbits in the winter time is a pound, cut for birtchs trees and make them into a square shape a tie 6 snares on each side a build it around with sticks so the rabbit got to go in the snares put some birtch limes in side the pounds,i got 5 almost ever day that in the pound, hope you try this i post a video on to build one.later on. give this a try.
The rabbit's head goes into the snare as it is walking...the snare tightens as the rabbit continues on it way...The more the rabbit struggles to free itself the tighter the snare will become...Hence cutting off oxygen to its brain...Hope that helps.
Up to 8 inches off the ground...would be about the upper limit...lower limit would be about 3 inches...the deal is to get thier head in ,and not their front paws.
Thanks for your questions...Do I do it for fun? No! Do I enloy the activity? Yes! Do I eat them? Yes! Every amimal I catch gets consumed... Untainted animal protein and primal instinct is what it's mostly all about. I could go on and on about the benifits of trapping, from the exersize I get to just being in nature ect. :-)
The string takes away the ability of the rabbit to weaken the wire strength by not allowing it to repeatedly bend it back and forth as the rabbit struggles... People claim the rabbit will bite through the string to free itself. That is untrue, I have never seen it. Also the string is less expensive than wire... Good question thx :)
This guy makes a better educational video than most professional companies. Great video thanks!
Love the TPB show...I talk with Bernard Robichaud (Cyrus) once in a while. I actually got a message from him this morning wishing me a happy b-day :-)
i used to snare wabbits all the time, when i would go out in the morning early, grey crows, foxes or ferral cats would always have taken some, shites that they are, its been ages since i done it and this brings it all back, more stuff like this needed on you tube, well done!!
Nice and concise. great for the newbie who needs to understand how things work. The music was distracting for about 10 seconds, then I got into it.
your videos are the best i have seen they are very simple yet very effective thanks for sharing your knowledge

Thx for the positive feedback...

thanks for passing on the skills that everyone else forgets
Thank you so much for showing me these. I dont like to kill animals, but i love the thrill of catching animals.
Going Hiking and trailing soon and can't wait to try this out, nothing like catching your own food for the night, some fish and rabbit over a nice fire :)... or squirrel, either sound fine to me.
Thx for taking interest in my vids! Best regards right back at ya...
nazareth! good band from my home land! good video and good music choice!
Man your videos are really great, thanks for the info and tutorials!
hello and thanks for a good video. I just wondered how likely is it that a rabbit will go on the same track twice
I'm not sure what province you're in, but here in Nova Scotia you need what is called a "Wildlife Habitat Stamp" I think it costs about 3 bucks or something. Also you have to follow the same rules as the hunters, like hunters orange etc.

whats up man love your videos. Im a longtime subscriber and a big fan and was wondering if you ever use a trigger snare?
hello and good video, but put it this way your lost in the wild and u got no bait what would you put for rabbits??????thank you
hi ive been watching ur snaring vids and have decided to snear too as im scottish there is no snow so hard to find prints any ideas to set up snare like near burrows?
kool video, i live about 10 mins walk from a large woods so im gona try this out. i think il make about 5 or 6 snares though just to increase my chances.
sorry if this sounds like nub question...how do you actually make the wire circle??
well how exzacly do they get cought in it...do they hop and their neck go in the loop then they go back down and choke
I've never seen anyone use cord to tie the snare to the twig or tree. We've always just wrapped the wire around the tree.
Curious as to if there's an advantage to doing it your way.
Also, do you ever use a spring pole?
Thanks for the tutorial. That looks like prime Nova Scotia.
How wide are the center of your snares?? And about how hish off of the ground do you set them?
nice guide!!!! especialy the knot, I've wondered how to make that knot for a while ;). I'm gunna go get a few wascally wabbits, hopefully, anyway!
Not sure but I think you can snare rabbits anytime if they become pests...most or all places have specific seasons for rabbits.
i appreciate your post! Excellent instruction!
Good information Norm. Thanks.
do you have to have a trapping licenese to set those not on your property cuz i dont want to get in trouble with the DNR!
So, once you make the snare, all you do is hang it like that and it really catches them?
Cool stuff.
Know how to set up dead falls? Im trying to learn, so far I've just tried to watch Les Stroud (survivor man) do it.

Thank you so much northernpike56. I got 3 big ones yestarday just doing it the way you said. The were yummy. Thank you.
BTW, you may not need a small game licence...Here in Nova Scotia for snaring you just need a "Wildlife Habitat Stamp" I think it costs about 3 bucks.
You can check that out with your local Department of Natural Resources.
Thanks man, rabbit do make great table fare...I will have another vid up soon.
can you snare rabbits year round or only during small game seasons
how long can a rabit lay after its dead and still be good to eat?
hey northernpike56 i wanna get into trapping beaver and rabbit snaring. do you no any good ways to trap them in the summer time?
So far this season I have caught 0-4 rabbits per day...I have 20 snares. Right now I have turned them so they won't catch anymore. I will right them again once I have consumed what I already have.
That is something I don't really know much about...all the rabbits I harvest are havested between Nov-Feb and seem to be fine...
What's the benefit of using string instead of one long piece of wire?
Nova Scotia, Canada...I can play that song on my guitar,I love it...Thanks for your comment :-)
You can catch them year around, but there must be an open season...Where I live the season is in the Fall and Winter...
hey, great video.. thanks for posting this!
im trying to get rabbits in my area what type of food should i use
if u used bait what would you use for it
What kind of saw do you use on the video?
@timmay821 I would suggest setting it a bit higher off the ground...yes I made a video called "snaring rabbits- checking rabbit snares"
what is that wire snare part? do you just buy that?
The rabbit will slowly walk through the narrow space like it usually does. They take the same paths regularly. The head goes through the snare loop and it slowly tightens on its neck. theres some rabbit's under my porch how do i set up a snare on concrete?
Keep at it, that's a good start...
@Desmond Mer thanks for all your great information.
The sticks are put around the snare, not through it, so they shouldn't interfere with the snare at all.
They're only put there to coerce the rabbit to go through the center of the snare.

Certainly you can. The only problem I have with fishing line is, it is very prone to abraision.
did it work after all???
but what baits do rabbits like?thank you
@bluenail90 is that his problem ? or the parents of those kids ur thinking about!?
i don't see how that tightens it isn't a slip knot or anything. Can someone explain how it works
how big do u make the lop in the snare wire?
So, how well did it work?
You should be able to set snares up near burrow openings using the same priciples shown in this vid... Rabbit droppings are a great indicator of the presence of rabbits too.
I wish you success :-)
Can you use fishing line?
That would depend on the temperature...if sub zero when it was caught, the rabbit should be ok in the snare for 2-3 days...
dude this helps me alot im gonna set some myself do u need a licence
@northernpike56 hey northernpike56 i wanna get into trapping beaver and rabbit snaring. do you no any good ways to trap them in the summer time? 1 second ago
would that snare work with fishing line?
You'll have to check with your local regulations for seasons...I'm not even sure if snaring is allowed in Scotland.
Thx for your comment...I agree Nazareth is Awesome!
Alright am convinced ill throw in somebeaver snares and martin traps if there is any tracks on the trapline ...
YW...good luck my friend!

lol nice!!those Rabbits you never suspect to be hunted by a man in a tuxedo!good tactic=)

do rabbits always stick to the same trail? like a raccoon?

Good question thx :)
good way or bad? id go for good
Thumbs up for Nazareth!
is willow good for this?
@northernpike56 Do you really think it'll be used for that? Kids round here will be after cats and allsorts.
You can, but fishing line is very prone to abraisions, which weaken the line.
Newfoundland? Or did you fall off the rock?
You're really good.
Finally a usage for those damn tag alders :)
