I lived in Lubbock as a kid growing up from '64 to '72, and the dust storms every late winter and spring were out of this world cool. The May 11, 1970 tornado was really something. For some strange reason, I loved the bleakness of this place, even as a kid. It instills a certain sort of attitude, if you know what I mean. Only been back there once since moving away. I miss it.
This is a cool vid. I use to live in Lubbock too. I didn't think you still had these big dust storms. I'll never forget them. I live in Casper, Wy.. We get the wind storms and tumble weeds too, but the dust just doesn't kick up here, like it does in Lubbock. (No cotton fields here.) Thanks for sharing. Brings back the memories of living in West Texas.
Man this is funny! My first ever visit to Lubbock, a friend and I were stopped at a red light at a deserted intersection. Not a car to be seen, but seconds later, a 'herd' of tumbleweeds raced along the cross street from left to right.
Welcome to a normal day in west Texas! I remember a couple years back when we made it on CNN with one of our dustier days and the car pileups that ensued!
@freeflippo Howdy former Texas neighbor. Remember the May 11, 1970 tornados like it was yesterday. Mom worked at the Great Life building that was slightly twisted; our church was hit; & one of them came down on 19th (girls dorm at Tech) & we lived on 22nd, between Acorn & Boston. That was one scary night, for sure. Home is where the heart is & although parents 'transplanted' us to TN in 1972 -- we're still Texans. lol
People need to get out more. I live in DFW, but I know about those crazy tumbleweeds. Dust storms too. My car still gets that musty, damp earth smell when it rains, because I went through a dust storm on the way to Amarillo.
Just found your video. I really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing!
