I absolutely hate this channel lighting effects and color tuning. It's like watching a video filmed in a smokes filled room on a Vaseline smeared monitor. Who ever is editing these videos needs to go take some classes on color tuning.
Yes. I installed windows 8 specifically to try this and it's unusable. Microsoft locked down any real customization, for instance, large tiles are only for live app features, basically never used. I ended up using win10 start menu in fullscreen, which is essentially the win8 start menu but with vertical scroll, had to mod it to use large tiles. There's an app called start11 which allows you to recreate that full screen win10 menu but with better features than vanilla. I use that now.
I'm so shocked windows has yet to create a portable UI, they were early with this prototype with windows 8 years back, and microsoft has even announced they're interested in creating a handheld, why no portable windows UI yet?
They even HAVE one from XBox. Why not port that to windows? I mean, it's likely already runnable on Windows. It makes no sense. Not that I love the XBox UI as it exists today but at least it's familiar and meant to be used with a controller.
Glad to see Playnite getting a call out. You might be the first creator that I watch regularly that has made a video on it. Going to give that XBox Reborn theme a try. Looks sleek and has a good game details layout
Microsoft is so weird. They tried so hard for so long to make a simplified Windows experience for small or lightweight devices but they always had one all along. It's called the Xbox UI. If they just made it an optional toggle like steam big picture mode, most people wouldn't complain.
I think that add segment was one of the best ad segments I've ever seen, I've never found such a suspenseful and story driven ad in my life! Keep these! They are amazing! And I actually remember what the ads about so win, I guess.

I used Playnite on my HTPC when I used Windows, just because of how easy it was to integrate Game Pass games. But, since switching to Linux and letting my Game Pass subscription expire, I've just been using Steam Big Picture Mode.
So you switched to Linux, then use Steam desktop 's "Big Picture Mode"? Because the "Gaming Mode" in SteamOS, while nearly identical in its frontend UI to Big Picture Mode, is different and leaner underneath.

I agree about launchbox having too much premium stuff locked away. I have it, and it's great. But it's a lot of money just to unlock the full potential if Big Box mode.
Also, the RAM it uses... jeez, that was the dealbreaker for me and switched too playnite 5ish years ago because of that, but I use it in desktop mode (like steam) for all my games in one place.

It's just not bad. It's a step down compared to the Wii and 3DS where the UI had so much personality. The Switch is really minimalist and boring compared to those. But Playstation and Xbox aren't really offering much better.
These custom frontends actually look way more awesome than I had expected, I personally don’t need windows though so I think I’ll stick with bazzite for my ROG Ally, but it’s nice to see what options are out there, thanks Bob!
I recommend using Steam's Big Picture Mode. It's straightforward and gives you access to Steam's other features, like messaging, directly from the interface. Here's the setup I suggest: 1. **Windows Settings**: Keep your Windows version on 23H2 and disable automatic updates through Group Policy Editor (gpedit). 2. **Remove Bloatware**: Uninstall unnecessary software. 3. **Install a Firewall**: Use a reliable firewall like Portmaster. 4. **Optimize Steam**: Set Steam Big Picture Mode to launch automatically on the device, as you initially suggested. 1:39 the Lenovo LOQ is a great line of laptops, I got the LOQ 15 (after having overheating issues with the legion go) and upgradability and serviceability on that laptop is incredible. I think I spent an additional $300 and went from the base 8 GB of ram and 512 GB of storage, to 24 GB ram and 1.5 TB of space, it’s a great laptop especially when you want the flexibility of gaming laptop, but the ability to hit one button and put it in power save mode and take it away from a charger for five hours (my luck only really lets me push it for about 3 1/2 hours away from a charger on Eco mode doing basic LOQ 15 with a i5 13th gen and RTX 3050. Very nice
Same I've used My OG Ally daily for a year load & run games exclusively from my 1.5 TB SD card still running strong and yes I mostly play 30w plugged in.
The problem is that you still have to jump through Windows hoops to make your handheld not feel like a Windows handheld, and Windows things are still going to happen that will pull you out of that illusion from time to time.

I'm a Steam Deck user myself, but it's cool to see the stuff with Emulation Station, I had no idea you could add Steam and stuff to that launcher.
Emulation station has a lot of great themes and scraping tools right in the app that can be easily accessed that make it look even better than stock. It'll even scrap content for most steam/pc games.
Armory Crate is magical the first time you open it on a new Ally X when it takes like 18 hours to configure itself, and all you get as an end user is a black screen and a prayer lol
I was thinking about it and I think if the device is powerful enough you can use it to replace a desktop computer specifically like with your dual monitors and full size keyboard and your mouse there but they still wouldn't be as good as a replacement for a laptop if you really need that kind of productivity on the go.
Y'all are funky as hell for giving Windows on these handhelds so much flak. For me, It's been largely responsive and easy to navigate on both the Legion GO & Ally, heck, even on the AYN Loki Max that I had. Some times I actually just wanna sit down with some of you, and watch you use windows for a couple minutes to see if it would explain to me why you all suck so much with it.
I absolutely love Playnite. I use the Vapour theme which is kind of Steam inspired. Edit- Forgot to mention I use it in tandem with a controller profiler called antimicrox that allows me to use the xbox guide button as an alt-f4 shortcut so I can seamlessly exit my emulators and go back to the front end without having to go back over to my computer to click on something.

I pretty much use my steam deck as a media pc now at this point, I only really go two places, Home and Work and dont travel alot so its spends alot of time in my bedroom hooked up to my tv. I use moonlight to stream my pc to my steam deck and have it set to automatically launch into Playnite Honestly it makes booting into my games awesome and easy, even the non steam ones like XBOX games such as Halo: Infinite. (Which is the reason I went with Playnite rather than Steam Big Picture.) (I am aware that there is a way to boot into xbox games through steam itself, but because I use a developer version of windows, the program doesn't work for me)
I had playnite on my legion go since the legion go launched it works great but i switched to the OLED steam deck this week for the screen, battery, ergonomics, and third party accessories.
My issue with using Steam Big Picture in Windows is that there's not a way to open the side menus at all with handheld PCs and those menus are very important for me
For the ROG Ally, if you go into armory crate and go into the gamepad controls section, you can make one of the back buttons an Xbox guide button so that way the side menus work. You use the back button for the STEAM menu, and the back button + A for the Quick Access Menu
I know not for everyone, but in my case Steam Deck + dock + display and keyboard and mouse replaced my laptop. For my usage this low power device meets my needs. Sure I’m not gaming on it in desktop mode (except for some really lightweight titles which work just fine). I fully understand other people might have different needs and this will not be an option for them.
I have my steam deck running emulation station with steam rom manager it automatically adds everything to steam. I have everything on there from nes to switch, master system all the way to dreamcast, ps1,ps2,ps3, xbox, xbox 360 and chiaki and xbplay with portforward to remote-play my xbox series x and ps4 and ps5 from anywhere So i literally never have to leave game mode on my steamdeck. Unless i want to add more games
You can also load individual emulator games into your Steam library. It's a bit tedious to do manually, but you can use a program like Emudeck that automates it for the most part.
Ive got to be honest, i don't know why someone would stick with wimdows on one of these. The performance overhead is insane compared to linux, where using a frontend is arguably a better experience anyway
Some games don’t run on Linux. At this point it seems like proton has gotten good enough that the last holdouts for compatibility are games with windows only anticheat
I still don’t think I’ll ever consider a windows handheld without installing a Steam OS like Linux distro. I don’t think it’s really worth dealing with these issues for the benefit of a couple of kernel anti cheat enabled games to run.
I was playing with ES-DE on my android and it was so rewarding once all launchers and scrap data was done. I gave up after trying to setup cemu for wii u showing up.
Xbox and Microsoft confuses me. It’s not that hard to make a multipurpose gaming/portable UI for windows devices. Can be used for gaming tablets and handhelds and should be easy to use with touch or on controller. Xbox UI which already runs on a version of windows should be perfect for this
Playnite for was better for Emulators. Despite them be emulators for different systems I am still playing them all on my PC or handheld, I don't care what software need to run in the background to get them working it's the game I want to experience, not the system it was on. So by adding the roms to playnite those just show up as if I have them on the PC. I lanuch Ratchet&clank and pcsx2 just kicks in the back ground it goes straight in the game. I still get the PS2 boot splash screen which is fine but I can actually set it up where I can skip this. it'll just go straight in the splash screen of R&C. So my Playnite just shows me the library as if they are all PC games reagardless of store or emulator software! I love Playnite!
I am thinking it was for the sponsor read, but why would you need a powerful laptop with a dedicated GPU, to do your taxes? Just curious. I always thought a good use case for PC gaming handhelds is being able to buy any laptop and not worry about its gaming performance. Thin and light with amazing battery, and my Ally X. ❤

Wanna heart something really ironic? For all the hate it got, Windows 8 tiles would have been perfect for handhelds nowadays
And Charm bar. And almost all things they made for touch.
I always loved windows 8 and windows phone 7
Yep, i said the same in the past. Windows 8 is the most relevant Windows for PC Handhelds.

Gonna have to give Playnite a try. I've been using the paid version of launch box in big box mode but Playnite looks neat
Xbox and Microsoft confuses me. It’s not that hard to make a multipurpose gaming/portable UI for windows devices. Can be used for gaming tablets and handhelds and should be easy to use with touch or on controller. Xbox UI which already runs on a version of windows should be perfect for this
what is that steam deck boot animation you used for xbox reborn on playnite
This would be better with PS4 theme. Switch is too barebones and xbox has ADS 😭🙏
Man this Steam Deck is great
Bob tricked me into watching an ad ☹️
Better hope nintendo doesn’t sue them for the menu
5:10 Holy smokes, I didn't knew that!
YES!!! And Playnite even lets you add access to cloud games and clients like XBOX Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now!
Playnite needs to support dualsense and add controller configs
