Thank you for taking the time to make and post this lunchtime chat and all of your videos! Good information here. I’ll check out your schooling videos! How often do you bring out a helper with you? I do remember the guy that got his chaps hit while bucking.
No problem...glad you like the videos.. As far as having a helper...I may bring someone on at some point...but as of right now...2024 has not been a normal year. The log markets seem sluggish...they keep taking volume off the table...cutting scale prices etc...so I had to go solo for now ( with two other fallers...but no helper)
I'm 75 so I think my time has passed to be a production timber faller. I did spend almost 45 years in the woods and sawmill. Back then I was told that to be a woods worker you needed a size 2 hat and a size 44 coat. I was qualified. My first day in the woods an old timer told me to go at it like I was killing snakes. That served me well, actually. If I was a young guy wanting to get started timber falling, I sure would join Dan's Faller School. Why not learn a bunch of do's and don'ts the easy way?
Yes... a bit hard to cut trees at 75...My Dad tried it for about two days... he got a wave of Nostalgia... came out with all his gear at age 73 ( Pretty sure that was his age) this was a couple years ago now. Anyways... he quickly decided to go back into retirement after two days....not that I blame him in the least! I was impressed he would even try it!
