Visiting Yellowknife on a very cold week

- Full version here ( • Cold Week in Yellowkni... . Last week I visited Yellowknife for the second time in two years. This time I mostly walked around in the scenic areas and trails. The weather was the coldest in several years, at times well below -40 degrees (which is the same in Fahrenheit and Celsius) without the wind chill. The trip was 4 days long, it never got above -34 degrees C (-30 F) the entire time, and I walked a total of 55km (34 miles) outside in those 4 days!
Beautiful scenery, will have to add Yellowknife to the list now!
I have always wanted a summer home in yellowknife midnight sun and the winter is also cool Auroria Borelis love the cuisine there Arctic Char bison strong hearty meat dishes for a strong tough man
I went there a couple of times on business. Let me say that when you go there on business, you don't plan for -40 degrees. The first time I went, I wore just a T-shirt. No long-sleeve shirt and no jacket of any kind. I learned my lesson and so the next time I went I prepared accordingly.
It was funny the second time I went. The guy at the airport was talking about some idiot who showed up the year before wearing nothing but a T-shirt. I smiled and said that that was me. I must have become a legend that they talk about around their campfires. I wonder if the stories are still being told after 10 years...I should go back for a visit - my adoring fans might miss me.

@@tuthiii - Let me have my ego. Go to the airport cargo area and ask about me. There might still be someone there from 10 years ago.
A true legend would show up every year in just a t-shirt

Just curious, why would you do that? Do you not own a map? If not, I'll let you in on a little secret, it's really really far north.
After seeing this, I will never complain about the cold again.

I'm in Vancouver and -5 is way too cold for me. But wow, Yellowknife looks stunningly beautiful at any time of year.
I went there during the -40 and rented a car (truck) . The rental company said do not turn off the vehicle during my stay and I was like what about when I an at my hotel sleeping? They said just let it run - nobody is going to steal it. That is what I did.
And what happened after?
I grew up there. I miss the weather.
Looks magnificent - and unyieldingly cold. :)
Would love to go there.
I want to as well someday, at least in the summer. I might combine it possibly with a future trip to Alberta I want to take.
@@crepesoftime For me I would want to go to some Arctic area during the winter since I've been tired of the crappy ones in Ontario.
@@Shonade_Malik I didn't think Ontario even really had Arctic areas. I know some places there can get really cold in the winter like along Hudson Bay in the far north but that still isn't really in the Arctic yet. Even Yellowknife is still in the subarctic slightly below the circle.
@@crepesoftime Oh I didn't mean an Arctic area in Ontario, the Hudson Bay Lowlands are like the coldest region there and I don't think they even reach 60 degrees latitude. I meant in general like some Arctic or subarctic area in Canada.

Yes, summer. Much warmer but lots of mosquitos! But only during the evenings...stay in the bars, lol!
I have to deal with this weather every winter
Thank you for showing an actual thermometer instead of your phone because my acurite tube thermometer which was tested for accuracy in ice water, (it read 0°C like it should), said 16°F while my device showed 27°F. That’s right, it was 11 degrees off. It also read 76°F while my thermostat also showed 76°F. But it’s a $2 thermometer so I’m not completely sure if it’s correct.

What is that green building that can be seen at 9:38-9:42? I see it in many pictures and footage of Yellowknife. Is it a private dwelling or business?

Felt exhilarating but also brutal, my fingers all ended up like the photo below just from filming these little clips. Still worth it, I want to do it again some day.

Better then plus 42
The F scale and C scale converge at -40 degrees. So, -40 F is equal to -40 C. This gives you an idea of what -42.9 C is like.
