I am a riverbank fisherman here in Fredericton New Brunswick. Slow rolling a spinnerbaits a good idea from the riverbank in a medium current or keep it high in the middle to top
What about pumping the rod instead of a pause in reeling? In my experience a pump gives you a similar pause because you have ro reel up the little slack you made for yourself on that pump.
