Accessories are not just an add-on to your outfit, they actually can make it or break it.
1. Navy jacket paired with a pastel and blue striped shirt, those colors are picked up by the tie, blue and yellow, orange and red, and then complemented by a pocket square that is likewise yellow.
2. An orange knit tie, a gray jacket, a pastel yellow or orange shirt, and then paired with a patterned pocket square that does not have the exact color tone.
3.You have to look at the texture of your cloth. They're all different so you also have to consider the different color palettes that you combine into your outfit.
4. Start with the suit or the jacket because that dictates where you go.
5. Once you have that down, choose a shirt. It's easiest to choose either a solid white, off-white, or light blue shirt because then you can really go wild.
6. Choose the tie because that defines what color accents you set and as a fourth, choose the pocket square which complements the tie.
7. When you're starting out, keep the ground rules in mind because they help you to create better, more dashing outfits.
So why should we invest in a pocket square in the first place? After all, it doesn't serve any functional purpose other than making you look great. As you just saw, the pocket square can really give your entire outfit a different look and feel and it's just a little piece of fabric that you can fold in a few seconds and it can take an otherwise average outfit and make it look awesome.
On top of that, a pocket square has the ability to tie entire outfits together that otherwise may not work really well.
Once you've mastered pocket square combinations that pick up on the color, you can also take the next step and go for pocket squares that don't have any color in common.
At the end of the day, you have to be comfortable in your skin and comfortable with your outfit and once you're confident with your choice, it will show and your overall look will be even better than if you are unsure about the combination you chose.

I'm always amazed by how you use oranges and browns. Figured it's more of an old-fashioned look but it looks modern with your styling.
For anyone I can give you a tip to have a look at the colorwheel . You can see which colors are matching
Ralph, I hope you will read my comment. When I subscribed to your chanell, I found your videos and style too formal.
That was a few months ago (about 8 months ago). Meanwhile I started to wear suits, shirts, ties daily. Now I find your videos and style more useful than Alpha M's and Antonio's which means I dramatically improved my style since I subscribed to your chanell..
I just want to thank you so much you afford you put into your videos!
+MRZsiir Glad to hear that! Please let others know what impact we had on your style, thanks
So true. While I am still subscribed to Antonio, I dont watch all his videos in entirety. Raphael's videos are really informative and always about the classic looks
I feel like you deserve a lot more subscribers than what you have, your content is very informative. You're very knowledgeable without being flashy or over the top like some other channels.
J Rod Agreed! He knows his stuff, unlike most others.
Done Subscribed!
I see how you've improved your video presentations over the last 3 or 4 years Sven. You are my go to consultant when it comes to all things Gentlemanly. I look forward to placing several orders for accessories at Fort Belvedere. I lift up my glass to you Sir, Cheers . . .
your suits are the best I love them I can recognize the quality from the screen of my phone and last but not least I like your advice in almost every video great job sir and hopefully I will see you in the menessential next year with Aaron and Antonio. greetings from Greece
I love this style of video. Colors are a beautifully complex subject and in my opinion separates the men from the boys when it comes to style. Getting the right fit can be difficult and even frustrating but its not hard to see color and textures are something that one can spend a lifetime mastering. I've made my share of mistakes and I have had to started fresh by being more conservative. I have been trying to hone my instincts and branch out and I know it just simply takes time to develop and signature style. Which of course is the real goal. Longer, in depth videos help a guy take those small steps forward. Thank you!
This is by far the best video and information on pocket squares out there. Most Just try to give generic advice which is usually hit or miss and only good for men new to dressing well. This video though shows exactly what I like to do with complementing and picking up other colors in tie or shirts. Also, I was happy to see him talk about handrolled edges being best and finding correct size for material used.
We appreciate the kind words.
Dear Ralph.Thanks.Great job.Great video.
You're brilliant.
Thanks for that Sven, you're one smart and informative dude.
you make inspiring videos and really help..much appreciated and respect to you.
Thank you for teaching me what I have always wanted to learn but didn't get a chance to.
Thank you! This is the video I've been looking for forever!
Makes me feel like going out to find some vitage ties in bright colours. Thanks for sharing

I have much to learn. Thank you!
my absolute favourite channel on youtube. any chance of a new video with tips for larger men? or particularly men with big bellies. Danke !!
Thanks for your kind words. I always suggest to use the search function on our website first, and you will find what you are looking for ;)
Excellent! I enjoyed the video.
wonderful video! my favorite!
Very insightful. I appreciate the information.
I see that you used peaked lapels with a knit tie. To me it seems that the knit fabric seems a bit casual for peaked lapels. Is there something that I am missing, or does this just boil down to preference? Thank you for sharing.
Love watching your videos
So what about same pattern (non-white) shirts and pocket squares? Is that a n0-no as well?
Also cotton pocket squares don't have rolled edges, they are stitched.
Thank you so much for your videos.i always want to wear classical, but I never found a trusted source. I have been following your instructions and enjoying wearing those classic iteam. Wonder where you get the navy suit you wear in this video. Thanks so much!
Hello Raphael! Thank you so much for your informative videos. You told us to steer clear from matching bow ties and pocket squares (same design, same material). However, I just wanted to know if it would still be acceptable to use a pocket square of the same design and material as the bow tie but different in colour (ex. Burgundy bow tie with navy blue polka dots, pocket square is navy blue with burgundy polka dots)
I have found your sense of style and approach very interesting and informative.
I was wondering only because I have yet to hear anyone talk about it. What is your opinion about hand painted silk Ties and Pocket Squares?
I was just curious. I like them because they are one offs and are very interesting in color and in configuration.
Thank you for your consideration, and another great video.
Personal favourite, white pocket square in presidential fold.
Another masterclass
Hey Raphael your blue/yellow/brown outfit in this video is super swell!
What is your opinion on white linen jackets? I'm looking for a cool one to wear in the summer.
I agree that the matching tie and pocket square may look bad but still a smart purchase especially when one buys two different sets you can then mismatch .....Great Video👍🏻
Thanks!
I sure wish he could go with me the next time I'm suit shopping!
Rapheal, so i should not buy a silk white pocket square but a linnen one?
And are different pocket square materials more formal or does it just depend on the pattern and the colour?
Great content. What about wearing pocket squares without ties?
I love the touch a pocket square gives but no one uses a tie where I live anymore (Denmark) or only the top executive management and no one else....and I personally don't mind on skipping the tie.
In the "old days" (I guess 1918-the 1950s) did pocket squares normally match the tie when you bought them together? Or are they always intended to look different from the tie?
Hello! Where can I get a shirt with stripes just like the one on your green striped white shirt? I’ve been looking everywhere!
Most necktie pocket square sets these days come with a reversible pocket square so that you can wear them together but have a difference yet complementary look
This video is VERY informative sir. Thank you!! Question.. do you have a video or can make one with matching bow ties and pocket squares?? Thank you 😊
How do you do? Do you have a youtube video about how to dress during a hike?
Do double-breasted jackets usually have one buttonhole on left-hand and one on the right-hand side?
Next, talk about Lapel pins ?
Hey can one have pocket square on odd waist coat? Not planning to wear suit jacket at all.
how do u store your pocketsquares in your wardrobe?
Is it okay to apply this with a three piece suit or would that be too much?
I have vintage 1950s cuff links with the letter “H” on them. Would a solid silk pocket square with an “H” be too much? Thank you!
great video! I would also add that the key to dressing well is drawing attention to the face. your manneqin combinations do an excellent job of that. to my eye, however, your bright yellow pocket square combined with the bright yellow in your tie tends to draw my attention to your (extremely sharp) outfit. fortunately, you are an excellent presenter so it's a really minor quibble
If you are wearing a grey double-breasted suit, with a black or navy blue dress shirt, a solid grey tie. Could you wear a solid black, blue, or grey pocket square?
who makes that striped orange shirt with white french cuff collars?
I think having a pocket square and tie the same color would be cool, but I have never worn a pocket square before.
Didn’t get a really specific example in the video, but for someone with lots of striped ties, what pocket square pattern would look good with that? Wider thicker stripes? Checkered? Crosscheck?
I’d look at solids, medallions, polka dots, and various multicolored prints (which look elegantly chaotic when folded). Depends on the shirt and jacket though - if they have patterns going on, I’d probably retreat to a solid or there would be too much going on.
is it acceptable to wear a tailored suit without tie, button undone with a pocket square??
maybe for cocktail attire but really, generally you can have no tie no pocket square, tie no pocket square or tie and pocket square. Great question though!
My next purchase will be to try your shop. I gotta be careful, because by the time the package reaches me, with exchange rate, it going to be around $190.
Ok so we know its bad to match your tie and pocket square. Whats the rule about the pocket square matching the vest?
Can you please suggest what kind of pocket square should I wear with a Blue Tux ?
Red or green?
For a tux, a solid red, white or green pocket square.
I have never had a problem with people matching solid-colour ties and pocket squares... It can look a bit off when they have matching patterns, but when they are pattern-free I think it looks fine and coordinated.
That tie you're wearing looks stunning by the way.
12:15 - 😶 raph, please go do a color vision check
Can u teach me color pallette that match my skintone
Advert for Primark on the Gentelmans Gazette... 🤣
so, what you are saying, no pocket square with a tweed jacket?
Are the pockets on suit jackets supposed to be like one inch deep? Cuz mine are.
Are you sure you opened it all the way down? Because they are oftened bought with the pocket still sown (is that the correct form? I'm from Germany:D) closed
If it's a faux pas to match pocket square to tie...what about white tie and tails...heh!
Pocket squares are used as emergency bibs when the restaurant has no napkins
How is a pocket square not practical? I thought the pocket square in your jacket was for the lady, and therefore put to use from time to time.
The handkerchief is for the lady, not the pocket square. Once the handkerchief has been used, you can't put in back in the front pocket.
Don't really know why I watch these videos, I don't even own a dress, or a tie, or a pocket square for that matter, maybe some ill fitting shirts and here I am watching a ten minute video about pocket squares, oh well...
4:57 wasn't it this just mentioned overcolouring? For me it's too much, but I wanna ask- is it?
If you focus on his nose his eyebrows seem to disappear
To use a lapel and pocket square combo with tie is too much going on.
Don't u stretch the pockets of your expensive jacket?
"Never match a pocket square exactly to your tie"
Thank you, Raph, you,ve just ruined my wedding outfit!...
Ok, I've git 2 weeks to fix it.....
Meh, it's one of those nonsensical arbitrary rules that has zero functional backing. Wear whatever makes you look good.
Isn't the jacket a little too broad in arms?
We can't see because of the words on the screen
"you can have just the tips show"
Uh, phrasing
I must be blind since most of these combinations don't look they match at all to me
You should NEVER match tie color to pocket sqare color
tprnbs Yes you should. You just shouldn't match solid or base colour. Match the colour of the tie-pattern and the pocketsquares base colour.
Mate you dress WAY too well! Is there such a thing as too much attention?
Disagree on pocket square not matching tie. I prefer the tie/square sets.
I lost my pocket square yesterday and I am very sad watching this video
