Yes, and big Ag can determine what we eat and what it costs. Blasphemy! We and our son’s family grow a lot of what we eat but not everything. If we like kale, we grow kale, if we like certain variety of tomato, we can grow that one and not another…IF we can find the seeds, so we save seeds. Small farms are so important to our countries and to consumers.
Thank you Karen, I was blessed to grow up surrounded by beautiful farmland and when I visited my home town recently it was all still there. It would be a tragedy to see it broken up and sold off. We must support our hard-working farmers xx
Our local farm, that has a very good butchers and greengrocers in their yard, is going to the rally on tuesday and has our full support, and we made sure we told em so ❤
People are so far removed from real food and those people who produce it they’ve no clue what this will do. It boils down to another land grab by the rich and corporations to my mind.
The wealthy who want the smaller farmers gone so they can buy up land don't care So long as their profits keep increasing. They want us to stop eating meat and start eating crickets. No doubt ultraprocessed crickets. The ruling elite have stuffed up your country but themselves are far removed from the down stream effects Support your local farmers as much as you can
Couldn’t agree more Karen. I now get everything I can from farm shops and farmers markets. It’s fresher than from supermarkets, lasts longer, generally tastes better and we need them! Keep banging the drum. Xx
I once did a challenge (in the 1999’s) to avoid the supermarket for a month of shopping. Farm shops and markets saved me! I bought most of our needs there, meat, eggs, milk, cheese, fruit and veg. It was hard to do though, tinned items I had to give up and go to the co op as they were the most responsible and community minded at that time. We need our farmers!
@@hev2519 I did 6 months had milkman, butcher, home bargains was fun and cash only. Only stopped because got allotment was taking a lot to get it up and running will have own fruit and veg by next year 😁
I just picked up an order of eggs, raw milk and a pie from an Amish co- op. I place a weekly order and pick up my items from a pick up point. It would be more convenient to dash to the store, but I don’t. I prefer to support our area farmers.
I am sure that large landowners will not have to worry about inheritance tax on farms, you know, the ones related to the ones with crowns on their heads. You are absolutely right, Karen, we need to keep the land and the farmers producing food. Their seems to be a concerted effort to separate us from farmers, in Europe, especially in the Netherlands....I think that there were protests in France and Germany as well. Every day, the prices here in Canada are getting more and more ridiculous, and I also hear about shortages south of us in the USA. Huge recall of butter just because of a labelling error, as if they simply can't put a little sticker on it saying "contains milk." Stupid, stupid, and one can't help but wonder what is the end goal?
Our farmers certainly need supporting since Starmer and Reeves pulled the rug from beneath them. It’s difficult to think of a worse start to a new government ever from that lot.
UK farmers shot themselves in the foot by voting Brexit. Plus the government brought the new rules in as billionaires are buying farms and land up to use in a tax loophole
I buy milk and cream from a local dairy to support them. The milk is more expensive than the supermarket but it arrives on the doorstep in time for breakfast. I try to take off the cream from the top to use in cooking. Don't get that in a plastic bottle. Mine come in returnable glass. I also sometimes buy a veg box of rescued produce. In the summer, there were pea pods included. Evudently a whole crop was up for grabs as the supermarket who had ordered them had not got their advertising in place in time. What a ridiculous excuse for rejecting produce.
Another reason to support your local farm shop is that they tend to have a lot less packed in plastic. I take my own glass milk bottles up and get them refilled. Now, Im not perfect, and I do buy milk from Lidil sometimes but if there is a bottle of local milk in the supermarket, I will buy that in preference. ( so, in West Cornwall that is Rhodda's or Trewithen). We must support our farmers. Trade wars are coming folks, especially after the USA election. Also, while farmers are 'asset rich' in terms of land, they are not cash rich and work hours and in conditions most office/catering/ admin/ city centre working folk would refuse to do! This is the government's attempt to tax the ultra wealthy who buy land, do nothing with it in order to avoid tax or sell it to developers. An unintended consequence is the impact on farmers. It is not yet law and can be changed.
I think it's horrible. I think it is part of the worldwide war on food.I would be so glad to be prepped so I could support the farmers.Land costs a lot, but to be 'land rich' but 'cash poor' is a reality.
I have worked on farms all my life and don't support the "poor farmers" theory. Too many, especially the inherited ones, are so used to their luxury lives that dirty hands are not part of it. Many of course do work hard, but certainly, the most affluent do not.
I agree, actual farmers need help on this. But it was put in place to stop the billionaires and big businesses from buying up huge amounts of farmland as a way to get out of paying inheritance tax. The idea was probably right but they have not done it right. As usual, the wealthy will wriggle out of it and others who can't afford it will have to pay. They need to take a long hard look at how they implement this policy.
And how do you think stately home owners have survived? Passing their enormous homes and land - worth far more than a million pounds - down through generations? There are legal ways round everything. Farmers need to change the way they have done these things in the past, in order to protect themselves. And no-one likes change - we Brits are in a class of our own at complaining about it - but it happens nevertheless. I would love to support farmers producing food directly for me, and I totally agree that supermarkets are thieving, robbing bar stewards, but despite being surrounded by farmland all I can buy from local farmers is lamb and eggs - no milk, no veg, no other meat whatsoever. I can’t help you if you don’t let me…
We now have the most ignorant government we’ve ever had!🙄 I live a little to the South of you in a rural area (always use my two farm shops) . Those people down in Westminster have no idea what rural life is like! Farm shops could be a good growing economy, let’s hope so. 😁👍
In the US our govt treats our farmers no better. Even after the pandemic and we learned how important they are to us.....the lesson is lost on us yet again.
The farmers strike is not about them actually going on strike. Dairy and livestock willl not be left! The supply of vegetables to packers and supermarkets will be interrupted.
They are getting played in the same way nurses are, because the government know they can't just walk off the job. Its disgusting. They grow crops in the winter too,for animal feed and grazing.
Hopefully in your life you'll rarely need a doctor, lawyer, or policeman. But every day, three times a day, you need a farmer. Fact. Stupid illiterate government. There have no idea.
Small farms are disappearing here in the US, being bought up by huge companies. We need to support our small farmers!

I support farm shops, not due to recent tax change because many will survive this, but l enjoy fresh produce and shopping locally.

Well said Karen 👏
We need the farmers .... with out them NO FOOD .

Yay! 🙂
Grab a few days worth of food to be on the safe side
Once again you're right. Wzll done.
Loads of rich people buy farms to evaide inheritance tax. I can think of a celebrity or two into this
My husband used to say that his family was land poor.
I live in rural Wales and the farms are disappearing as they families do not make enough sadly.
Many are worried they cannot be viable with the proposed 20% of land being set aside for "biodiversity" before being left with IHT of 20% too.
@lat1419 they have every right to be worried
The vast majority of farm's won't be affected well done Labour for closing a tax loophole .

Totally get why there upset am making a list to buy direct from them.

Bypass the inheritance tax and put your children's or Sibling name on the details. If you pass nothing changes. So no Tax.
I shop online in Pembrokeshire at Open food network Peninsula Food Market.
Look for open food network in your area?
