Please be aware that this video has caught the attention of anti-Ainu groups. There are anti-Ainu comments accusing Ainu of not being indigenous by talking about civilizations that predate the Ainu. However, “indigenous” isn’t defined as the first civilization to settle somewhere ever. UN explanation of indigenous: “Indigenous peoples have in common a historical continuity with a given region prior to colonization and a strong link to their lands.” www.un.org/en/fight-racism/vulnerable-groups/indigenous-peoples Being indigenous is about existing prior to colonization, not existing since the dawn of time and the fucking big bang. Whether or not other civilizations existed before the Ainu does not affect their indigenous status. Discussing civilizations existing before the Ainu is a common tactic used by anti-Ainu groups. Here’s a Britannica link discussing Ainu being indigenous: www.britannica.com/topic/Ainu Another common tactic is to accuse the Ainu of lying about being Ainu or being paid actors. I will let you decide for yourself if that’s a valid argument. Anti-Ainu groups in Japan are an extremist minority and do not represent the majority of Japanese people.
👏 Restate the definition again for the multitude of anti-indigenous people in the back!! This isn't exclusive to Japan, it's a worldwide phenomenon. THANK you!

Insane that there are people in Japan so devoted to working against such a minute part of the population which have been almost culturally and racially eradicated.
anti indigenous hatred is the same everywhere. you cant hide behind "local context" if you are always saying the same thing! freedom to all indigenous everywhere in the world
This comment is way too simple. Anti-indigenous hatred isn’t “everywhere”, it’s every where there’s a colonial presence. Most colonies on the planet belong to European invaders and thus, the popularity of anti-indigenous sentiment spread globally. This instance is unique because it’s a closely related group assimilating it’s own people to fit more European (“modern”) standards. Unfortunately, hateful ideology is an infection fresh out of Europe and everywhere they went, they damaged cultural standards permanently.

It SHOULD, but the Japanese mindset is very singular. There's a saying in Japan, "the nail that sticks up gets hammered down." @PHlophe British, Spanish, and French specifically in history. But now, even that is a blur. Indigenous people are still discriminated against in America to this day, and their people are murdered or are going missing.
My father was a friend of Kayano Shigeru. I met him as a child. The proud Ainu people should continue to fight for recognition, and they will never be erased.
Would also be interesting to know the extent of Ainu DNA mixed into the Japanese population as it is very likely some of the anti-Ainu have some Ainu ancestry!
Exactly, just like Hitler had some Jewish ancestry. Those that cast stones at others usually have a closet full of skeletons that they're trying to hide from the world.
In terms of genetics, the Ainu, Ryukyuan, and other Japanese people all carry genes from both indigenous and migratory ancestors; the difference lies in the proportions. Studies show that there are no Ainu or Ryukyuan people today who carry only indigenous genes. Furthermore, among those identifying as Ainu, there are some of Korean descent who have no ancestral ties to the Ainu or Japanese. In other words, the term “Ainu” cannot be defined genetically but rather refers to people who wish to preserve the culture and traditions for future generations.
The Ainu have highest Jomon genetics the original inhabitants of Japan. Aside from the North, Kyushu also has higher Jomon genetics representing the Hayato people for example the Jomon also originally immigrated from the South to North. The least is in the Kansai region in Honshu as this is also where the East Asian Farmers, Yayoi people first settled.
The two comments above mine already explained it pretty well but I wanna add some stuff. Genetically speaking, they're almost identical. Thousands of years ago, the Jomon people used to live in Japan and it's believed that Ainu came from them. Then, at one point, the Yayoi people came in from Korea and formed what are known as the Yamato people. The Yamato are what you think of when you think of Japanese people. Despite Ryukyu (Okinawa prefecture) having always spoken a Japonic language, they're actually genetically closer to the Ainu in Hokkaido. As someone mentioned, Kansai is genetically the furthest because the Yamato kingdom literally formed in the plains of Nara, which is in Kansai. Having said that, genetically speaking, they share a lot of similarities. There used to be a lot of theories regarding where the Yamato come from. Once upon a time, it was believed that they shared the most common ancestry with Chinese people but, actually, nowadays, Yamato have been found to likely be closer to Siberians or North-East mongoloid populations in general. With the Ainu, it's no different. Having said that, there have been interracial marriages in Hokkaido. The majority of people there originate from Tohoku (the Northern part of the main island) and they mostly came during and after the Meiji restoration began in 1868. So, there is a lot of genetic mix up in Hokkaido for sure

Japan should be greatful the ainus are just asking to be recognized as equals despite the resistances,if this is in different part of the world people would ask for seperation and independence
The majority of minorities only ever ask for recognition and equal rights but even that is considered "dangerous" or "provoking" to those who belong to the "majority"
The moment Japan goes against American interests, you shall see how minorities in Japan will become militant. The Europeans were always good at stirring conflicts between local natives and arming one side against the other, and they are still doing this in prts of the world today.
Maybe it's better to separate and be independent. Or just move to another place or be apart of other countries where people are genuinely welcome and appreciate you.

Sad to see how the Yamato (Wa) people treat the actual Japanese peoples... being butthurt about a race that enjoyed living in the land long before they showed up. Wrong. The earliest inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago were the Jomon, who settled on the islands over 10,000 years ago. The Ainu and the Jomon are not really related, although it is often misunderstood. And the Yayoi moved into Japan over 2,000 years ago. Hokkaido was an isolated land, but Jomon and Yayoi also settled there. In fact, Jomon remains have been excavated in Hokkaido. And what about the Ainu? The Ainu originally lived in Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands all the way back to the 7th century when they settled in Hokkaido.

When I was in highschool, I learned about the forced erasure of Indigenous people by the European explorers who betrayed the Indigenous communities’ trust in exchange for their lands, resources, and estabilishing their government. The schools built by the European colonizers called “Residential schools” were built to indoctrinate Indigenous children far away from their families to “assimilate” to the European culture of enforced Christinaity, and English learning. The concept was “To kill the Indian(a slur for Indigenous people) in them(the children) ) The children were stripped way from their culture, such as cutting their braids, a sacred hairstyle which signifies “strength, wisdom, and honoring their ancestors”, forcing children to wear European attire, and banning speaking from their Indigenous languages. The thousands of children were abused physically, s*xually, and mentally by the residential school authorities. Currently, many Indigenous individuals suffer from homelessness, PTSD, generational trauma, abuse, dr*g and alcohol addiction, bullying, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. As a child, I grew up learning that Indigenous people are alcoholics and dr*g addicts, and I should never be close to them. I only learned about the history of Indigenous people in Canada for ONE semester, but I am also lucky I got to learn their culture from the yearly school Indigenous assemblies by the Indigenous artists, performers, and storytellers. I am also lucky that I have the opportunity to know Indigenous people through social media, specifically TikTok, such as “The Indigenous Baddie”, “Shina Novalinga”,”Notorious Cree” and many more! I'm Swedish and this is all stuff I recognize from historical subjegation of our indigenous people.
I remember telling someone I wanted to visit Hokkaido to see a part of Japan in its more pristine state as it reminded me of the far north country in USA/Canada as well as having still a significant remaining population of indigenous Ainu people living there. Ainu and Okinawans (Ryuku) are the true natives. Most of today’s Japanese are of Chinese and Korean descent. Information about this can be found at the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno.
Such a stupid reasoning. The ainu and yamato people have both jomon and yayoi admixture. The okinawans does too. Now you a foreigner has no right whatsoever who is native or not when both these groups are 2000 years living on those lands
@ The genomic data states otherwise. The Ainu and Ryukyuans are the native people of the islands today known as Japan. As I already stated, you can find information about it at the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno. @@tournaline3448 ok this is just wrong. Ainu are predominantly only living in Hokkaido which is north of Japan and they are only indigenous to those. Okinawans likewise are native to the okinawanan islands. Now deconstructing your lie. A lot of Ainu words were absorbed into (Wa) Japanese, mostly words describing nature in the northern regions like "kami" (god/spirit/bear), "sake" (salmon), "o-okami" (wolf); and some may be cognate across Ainu, Japanese, and Korean: "chis/chip" (home), "tuki" (bowl/cup).
Most indigenous populations do globally, it's one important facet. In some regions of the world (like West Asia) they're often relegated to liturgical spheres where they are baked into religious heritage for preservation. In other cultures globally they're part of ceremonies or other ritual rights. On some continents, indigenous languages that have faced attempts of erasure by invasive groups, cultures and languages pledge a vow of "secrecy" where no outsiders are permitted to learn the language.
This is a lovely video. I'm an Indigenous person in Canada, and I looked up Ainu to try to better understand indiginiety around the world. To all people out there who can't read Japanese: imo, it's insulting even the way that 'ainu' is written by the anti-ainu people. Katakana, to those who don't know, is one of the two syllabaires used by the Japanese alongside the hiragana (another syllabaire, older with more 'rounded' symbols) , and the kanji (the one which has many symbols each with different meanings). Initially, the katakana was created to allow for writing and printing in *very* old computers, as the complex symbols of the hiragana and kanji were far too detailed for the 2bit screens. The katakana symbols are all straight lines and dots, making it still recognizable in very small print. After that, the katakana was widely popularized by being used to write foreign words, since most of them don't have a kanji or exact pronunciation in Japanese. "Ainu" is written in katakana, as if to ourline that it's 'not part of Japan/Japanese'. And before you ask, there are the name of many countries (such as England, China...) which can be written in kanji, which makes it culturally a lot more 'official' and respectful when referring to someone or something. Ainu *should* have it's own kanji, if it doesn't, if nothing else as a way of Japan of showing proper acknowledgement to their indigenous people and the impact they had in each other's history.
While I agree with you when it comes to writing Ainu in Japanese, it is important to mention that one of the two common ways to write ainu itak (the Ainu language) is a special modified katagana to accommodate for the language's phonetic charactaristics. It features katagana that are not used in Japanese at all, as well as smaller versions of some signs, so that Ainu syllables or sounds that would not be used in Japanese, can be written. The other option one has is Romanji/Latin script. Both are used by people in the Ainu community. But since there are no native speakers left, one could argue that the katagana based ainu writing system helps young ainu to learn about their culture, history, and language.
The name Ainu isn't written in katakana only by anti-Ainu but rather everyone, because it's what they call themselves. In older texts they were called Emishi (蝦夷), but this name has the character for 'barbarian' so it's quite derogatory. I don't see the problem with writing Ainu in katakana, as kanji is only used for Japanese or Sino-Japanese roots with a few exceptions. 'Ainu' is a loanword in Japanese, borrowed from Ainu 'aynu', so it's natural that it would be written with katakana. Even if you make a kanji for that, good luck getting it into unicode, and then it will be displayed as a blank square until all devices get the needed updates to show it properly. A lot of devices don't even get updates anymore so the kanji won't show up in those ever. There's a reason they don't make new kanji anymore. And even if they do, it would be a quite pointless virtue signalling move. They can do a lot more useful things than that.
@@ElisabethOrchard The katakana Ainu script is quite overcomplicated and unnecessary for Ainu which is phonetically quite simple and can be written with 16 Latin letters. Everyone in Japan also knows the Latin script and it can be typed anywhere easily, unlike Katakana Ainu which can not even be typed with a Japanese input method and needs an Ainu input method.

and there are countless more stories in east asia and south east asia of different ethnic groups facing discrimination in thailand, indonesia, philippines etc it is sad to hear there stories
Yes in Philippines we have ethnic group called Aeta, or generally called them 'Negrito', they have kinky hair, short stature, and dark skin tone. They are the first settlers in the Philippines before Austronesian came which are also the majority now in the country, Negrito also face discrimination for having different appearance, They also lost their language and assimilate with Austronesian but their culture still remain. Today, Majority of Austronesian Filipino has Negritos genes except to the Igorot tribes which are the purest Austronesian themselves. Also Negritos now aren't pure as well. They have more Austronesian to them than Austronesian having Negrito.

ill never understand the whole "clearly people are pretending to be this minority that we discriminate against, for priviledge!!!" like do they hear themselves
Technically speaking, both Ainu and Yamato are indigenous enough. Both of them has lived on the land for the past 2 millennia. The problem is a minority discrimination based on cultural differences. The old time racism
I find myself ( a mixed japanese person ) incredibly interested in the other cultures in Japan, and am absolutely disheartened by the fact people cannot see they are just as human as we are. They may speak a different language, have different features, traditions, etc. But they live here as well, and they have deserve to be proud of their identity.
Thank u so much for this - it breaks my heart that this prejudice and hate is still directed towards this beautiful indigenous people. I lived in Hokkaido in 1982 and was blessed to have visited a few communities and witnessed a few festivals giving me an insight and always wished to know more. Thank you for this honest and insightful discussion. I studied Japanese in high school for six years and at uni for 2 years; nobody ever discussed Ainu people in school and at uni, we heard a little about the Ainu people only very rarely and never from our Japanese born lecturers - only from the Australian lecturer. Sadly, while the problem is universal, we can take some comfort from the fact that we now have better communication capability and increasingly inclusive younger generations who are more aware of the inherent value of diversity and learning from all cultural experience.

In the US, Black and Indigenous people entered (and still do) the military thinking they’ll get benefits from the government for serving but we are still discriminated against and still considered second class citizens or not even citizens at all. Which is insane when the government wants to consider indigenous land their land but don’t want to give the people who lived on it or were forced to live on it correct treatment.
This reminds me of us Amazighs, the native & majority inhabitants of North Africa. We went through similar treatment & still go through it from Arabised populations adhering to (Pan)Arabism & Islamism. Ethnocide, descrimination, and globalisation have erroded so much of our culture & know-how that our language & identity are under the threat of extinction. I must add that being too much gentle & not having so much of the historical records made a lot of us either have an inferiority complex or a sense of victimhood; both being bad for growth & overcoming adversity.

"The Ainu culture has existed since the 12th or 13th century..." - no, it is believed that the Ainu culture is the continuation of the Jōmon culture, which has been present in Japan since prehistory, so at least several thousand years. The Japanese culture (Yayoi) has been there for maybe 2500 years, and slowly pushed the Ainu/Jōmon culture northward. BY the 12th century the Ainu were ONLY present in Hokkaidō and maybe the far north of Honshu.

Ainu were NOT indigenous to Northern Japan, Ainu were indigenous to All of Japanese islands. "Modern Japanese" are Koreanic people who moved into Japanese island around 2500 years ago to 1400 years ago in waves. They pushed out the indigenous people to North East direction.
What's fascinating is that westerners wouldn't even notice a difference between ainu and other Japanese, any more than they'd see a difference between an egytian vs Mauritanian.
The same thing has happened to the indigenous Sami people. They too had to undergo assimilation in the 19th century in Norway, Sweden and Finland. Even today they still receive discriminatory remarks and treatment.

This is awesome you are covering this, many foreigners do not know enough about Japan. Especially about the Ainu.... Been to the museum in Shiraio and enjoyed it. 😊 Keep up the good reporting, 👍.
Please be aware that this video has caught the attention of anti-Ainu groups. There are anti-Ainu comments accusing Ainu of not being indigenous by talking about civilizations that predate the Ainu. However, “indigenous” isn’t defined as the first civilization to settle somewhere ever.
UN explanation of indigenous: “Indigenous peoples have in common a historical continuity with a given region prior to colonization and a strong link to their lands.” www.un.org/en/fight-racism/vulnerable-groups/indigenous-peoples
Being indigenous is about existing prior to colonization, not existing since the dawn of time and the fucking big bang. Whether or not other civilizations existed before the Ainu does not affect their indigenous status. Discussing civilizations existing before the Ainu is a common tactic used by anti-Ainu groups.
Here’s a Britannica link discussing Ainu being indigenous: www.britannica.com/topic/Ainu
Another common tactic is to accuse the Ainu of lying about being Ainu or being paid actors. I will let you decide for yourself if that’s a valid argument.
Anti-Ainu groups in Japan are an extremist minority and do not represent the majority of Japanese people.

The yakuza were formed because of discrimination too. Even Okinawans got discriminated.

Japan should be greatful the ainus are just asking to be recognized as equals despite the resistances,if this is in different part of the world people would ask for seperation and independence
It's bad enough they have been forced underground.

Trigger Warning: Abuse, Homelessness, and Dr*g Use
I am half Japanese and half Bengali and I am from Canada.
The concept was “To kill the Indian(a slur for Indigenous people) in them(the children) )
The children were stripped way from their culture, such as cutting their braids, a sacred hairstyle which signifies “strength, wisdom, and honoring their ancestors”, forcing children to wear European attire, and banning speaking from their Indigenous languages.
I only learned about the history of Indigenous people
in Canada for ONE semester, but I am also lucky I got to learn their culture from the yearly school Indigenous assemblies by the Indigenous artists, performers, and storytellers.
I am also lucky that I have the opportunity to know Indigenous people through social media, specifically TikTok, such as “The Indigenous Baddie”, “Shina Novalinga”,”Notorious Cree” and many more!
I am so heartbroken that people do not educate themselves and want to know Indigenous people because they havs such a rich culture that embraces the importance of community, respecting nature, and gender equality.
No country should hurt anybody of any background!
As a Japanese, I did not know the Ainu had a history of discrimination, and it is so heartbreaking.
Seriously Hate Is Unnecessary.
Why hate someone when you simply don’t even want to educate yourself.
I do not want a Japanese person to be ostracized because of their identity. It hurts to see someone be treated like this. It is unfair and disgusting!

I remember telling someone I wanted to visit Hokkaido to see a part of Japan in its more pristine state as it reminded me of the far north country in USA/Canada as well as having still a significant remaining population of indigenous Ainu people living there. That person (not naming names) replied “Why would you want to go there? It was a mixture of bewilderment and disgust. Most answers I got about the Ainu at that time were very evasive if not ignored entirely. I really hate it that Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere are still being discriminated against.
Wikipedia also has extensive information on paternal and maternal genetic lineages of the Ainu people along with some information regarding the autosomal DNA.
@@tournaline3448 ok this is just wrong. Ainu are predominantly only living in Hokkaido which is north of Japan and they are only indigenous to those. Okinawans likewise are native to the okinawanan islands.
Now deconstructing your lie. Both the ainu and the yamato have shown a variety of jomon and yayoi ancestry.
the Ainu and other regional Japanese populations possess these paternal lineages (D-M55* and D-M125) in common.
@@tournaline3448 now, Japanese and ainu are both native to japan.
The haplogroups you mention are far more common in Ainu and Ryukyuans than in other Japanese which naturally suggests that the Ainu and Ryukyuans are the native population who are descendants of the Jomon people. D-M55 is found in close to 90% of Ainu males but only 33% of other Japanese. I think you’ve proved my point.

There are theories about Ainu and Japonic, Korean etc being related but they’re widely rejected by linguists now (RIP macro altaic)

I remember when I was a kid, my mother, who was Okinawan, once made a comment about my Japanese friend’s mother. Something to the effect of “she’s from mainland, they look down on us”. I didn’t understand that comment until I was older and learned about the discrimination against Okinawans, Ainu, ethnic Koreans, and other groups in Japan. It’s sad to see that it’s still continuing, and we’re not much better with how we treat indigenous people here in the states. I’m glad that there’s activists out there trying to fight for rights and to preserve the culture, it’s very important work.
Many cultures and tribes were stepped on in many countries because of the unification of these countries, they needed a "unified" identity to strengthen their powers over all what they've considered as "their" territories. It's the birth of nationalism. It's clear that diversity was a threat to their governments and strategies.
I recently learned I’m part Ainu after finding a photograph of my great, great grandfather and noticed he was Asian… something my family never talks about
To all people out there who can't read Japanese: imo, it's insulting even the way that 'ainu' is written by the anti-ainu people.
Completely wrong, katakana wasn't created for computers, katakana predates the invention of digital or even electromechanical computers.
