It's a game that was part of the childhood and teenage of generations of people. It means a lot to them. Same with StarCraft and Age of Empires games, this one holds the same value to everyone.

Currently the expansion pass says Chinese mythology and then another unnamed one. Hopefully the game does well enough we either get more expansions in the future or a straight up massive sequel.

Great video, fantastic reaction all around. So a few things for the curious, there is a 15% Steam loyalty discount for Extended Edition owners (only valid for the premium edition version).
The game comes in two editions Standard (which is just the full game) and Premium, with premium including a few things like a new god pack for Freyr (new god for Norse) a legacy portrait pack (for the gods) and access to the 2 expansions currently planned for the game when they release. Premium also includes 7 day advanced access.
The first expansion is going to be a reworked Chinese pantheon which does make sense since a lot of the mechanics and assets were just hastily put together Tale of the Dragon is also the worst reviewed expansion in AOE franchise history and for good reason. If they are committing to reworking it fully there is certainly value there.
The second expansion is yet to be revealed at all.
Apart from the Chinese gods Retold includes everything I from the original and Titans but with some reworked gameplay mechanics (including an increased population limit and multi-use god powers, it is unclear how this will look in practice as of now).
The game will also feature a completely new game mode coming post launch, Arena of the Gods which is a new single or co-op experience.
Lastly, Retold is going to feature at Redbull Wololo this year which is where we are going to see some competitive PvP multiplayer for the first time.
Also to clarify, since the worry was expressed, you don't need a GP sub to play it but those with PC or Console (or Ultimate) Game Pass can play it on launch at no extra cost on the respective platform. GP subs can also just buy the premium edition upgrade to get those perks. The full game regardless is $30. That last bit is wild to me as that makes it cheaper than the other latest AOE games. Even if there's less content this is easily the most anticipated in a while. The entire game + premium edition is only $50. Meanwhile other games are trying to charge me $130 for all content in what often ends up a broken hallow mess. I can't speak to pricing back when the original AOM dropped, but that's a lot better priced than I was expecting a modern remake (maybe Modern gaming has just made me cynical).

@@klavicus2276 the game will have a lot of fundamental gameplay differences compared to release AOM which I personally am very excited about.
Worth noting about the cost is that there will be both a favour cost and a cooldown mechanic both do seem to increase with every use, with the base cost being different depending on what power it is (as seen in the podcast footage).
I would absolutely love an official Aztec or Maya expansion, until then have you heard of the mod "Return of the old Gods"? It does a pretty good job of adding an Aztec civ to the game.
I think Aztec are really cool but I personally would LOVE Mayan culture. They are older and more advanced. Unfortunately you can’t really add both cause they share similar gods… Again I really like Aztec but idk why Mayan are less popular in the community
yeah i am quite sure the 2nd expansion is gonna be one of the american mythologies ugh lame cause i hoped for japan or something from africa or middle eurasia or mesopotamia (as a finn i obviously hope for our mythology but not holding my breath for it)

Here I was thinking I was alone in having this game begin my journey into mythology. That intro cinematic would always light my eyes up, as corny as it is watching it now.
I did no 0:01 t know it had expansions or that a remake was even in the works, cuz I completed the base game on release, years ago when I was around 6 and left it there and then.
Watching this trailer just sparked something inside of me, as if I was reliving a forgotten dream lost to time.

This game was my childhood, I loved reading all the info the game gave you on the myth units, the greek heroes and even the buildings. It made me get into history, best rts game ever imo.
this game & reading greek myths in elementary is the whole reason I love mythology and lore in stories these days. this game is beyond anything i could have wished for
Age of Mythology is first game i completed 100%, i will never forget that!
i can just hear your excitement in your voice for me when i got this game i was probably 8(ish) but it was in 2009 or 2010 i allready was a huge mythology nerd because of stargate of all things then when i was 9 this game inspired me to make a 8 page school project on mythology specifically on egyptian mythology but i was planning on making one on all the mythologies in the future but it just never happened

If they're going to add the China stuff in I think they need to do a better job of integrating it into the sandbox. Personally I think they need to add a properly voiced campaign for the Chinese mythology, like they did with Atlantis to get people invested in some gods and myths that they may never have heard of before.

I love the original game and I'm very excited for this remake.
I don't like Prometheus' redesign either. He was made of clay in the original game because he sculpted the first humans out of clay, so why is he made of lava now? Maybe to represent the fire he gave to humans?
Also I'm pretty sure the Atlantean titan isn't Typhon, the game files refer to it as a golem titan. Now it looks like a humongous fire giant.
In the initial announcement for the game, they said the Chinese would be in the base game at launch, but clearly the plans have changed.
They've announced that at least 2 expansions are planned. I'm really hoping we get Mesopotamians and Mesoamericans.
Except of the nose I love the design or Prometheus more now. Before he looked awkward in my opinion but still better than really weird looking Prometheans (one of my least favourite units in the old game) now they look more Iman like but still a bit fluid and not fully shaped. The lava on the promethans is a bit much but I like the glowy contrast makes them more intimidating IMHO

Hi Mythology Guy, really like this channel! I too am SUPER stoked for Retold, and hope the 2nd Xpack is an Aztec civ! In the meantime, there is an Aztec-civ addition mod for AoM Extended Edition on the Steam Workshop called "Return of the Gods". (Trying not to sound like I'm shamelessly promoting my own content, so full disclosure, I'm one of the mod team devs.) It has very good reviews and it would be an honor if you'd try it out!

They'll probably save his reveal for the campaign trailer which will be extended since we are getting content from AoM: The Titans we'll also get the Epilogue Campaign that was in that expansion which is focused on the adventures of Kastor.

Loved the reaction. I know stuff like the fortnite trailer reaction probably gets more views, but I love it so much more when people are just flipping excited over what their reacting too and just geeking out. Not a AOM OG but I've loved everything I've heard and am looking forward to it so much!
Since there was some confusion at the start. It's Xbox because Microsoft has owned and published the AOE series since the first release in 97. After Microsoft launched the Xbox though they never did a good job merging their PC and Console gaming efforts. It's only relatively recently Microsoft put all their first party studios and IP under singular Xbox leadership and rebranded as Xbox Game Studios across the board. Like the full rebrand was literally 2019 and it's taken some time since then for their traditionally windows only games to support Xbox (finally got AOE last year and Flight Sim in 2021). Now all their games release same day on both Xbox and PC and if you buy it through Microsoft you get it across both platforms with cross progression, but they also release day one on Steam so you can avoid MS entirely.
Day one on Game Pass does not mean you can't purchase it. It's just Xbox's gaming subscription and they've given the promise of all first party releases day on on the service so current subs don't have to pay extra (unless they want to upgrade to the premium edition). There's Console and PC versions and Ultimate which has both + cloud gaming (actually pretty neat for games with touch controls on the phone). You can 100% buy it without GP though through the MS store or steam.
The game is $30 base price or $50 for the premium edition. GP subs can also upgrade just to the premium edition for $25. I'd check out all the premium version bonuses, but what stood out to me was 7 days early access. September 4 is already really soon though.
Already confirmed with the first expansion is a rework of the Chinese Pantheon, Which was needed for the pantheon to figure the identity of the pantheon. For the second expansion, I hope for an Aztec/Mayan or Japanese will be cool with Yokai as myth units.
This game also means a lot of to me. This and Age of Empires 2 are probably still my favorite RTS games. Still waiting for that review video.

China has been confirmed as the first expansion for the game. It looks like they are going through a completely redoing China. The complaints weren't just that it was unbalanced. They were that certain elements were fundamentally broken, that it relied heavily on reused assets, that it was poorly conceived from a mythology perspective and that the campaign was a terrible, repetitive experience with no chance to fight non-Chinese factions. A lot of people did not like which gods ended up as major gods and where minor gods were placed agewise. So instead of adding in a Chinese pantheon that many were unsatisfied with they look to be redesigning them from the ground up and then charging for them.
Which is the right decision imo!

Hey I think the game entered the Closed Beta phase or something. You should check out the unit upgrades. They apply graphical changes.
As someone who has been subscribed to Game Pass for a very long time I can say with 100% confidence that unless something changes you'll be able to play it day one without Game Pass, the VA saying "Play it Day 1 on Game Pass" is saying that because this is a Microsoft 1st Party game and Microsoft always put their 1st party games onto Game Pass day 1.

Never played this before, but it looks like fun, I might get it. There is a lot of other games and dlcs I want to get. I might have to add this one to the list.
If you've played Age of Empires then you should have a rough idea of what Age of Mythology is like, it's like Age of Empires but instead of just your normal array of soldiers and archers and siege weapons you also get laser crocodiles, frost giants and Valkyries amongst other fun things.
@@CaptainB1994 , I never played Age of Empires, but I played Age of Wonders. They both in the same category of strategy, but I don’t know how similar they are, I’ll go compare their trailers. Ok so in both you’re building cities and ranking up your troops in both, but one is fantasy base and the other is more realistic. Cool!

They announced that they will be releasing two new expansions with two pantheons: the "All new" China pantheon (which is funny because Extended exsists) and an unnamed pantheon (both will be $14.99) and they also are monetizing the Classic style god portraits.
The Chinese version in the Extended Edition was highly criticised for plenty of reasons, in short because the expansion was rushed and lazy:
- Most unit models are just low-quality reskins of existing units, not even new animations. Stats of most myth units are straight copy-pastes of existing ones.
- The developers were in disagreement of the civ's design and it shows. The Chinese identity is not on par with the other civs, there are no distinctive strengths and weaknesses.
- The civilization is badly balanced regarding the other civs. Updates lessened this issue, though some bugs and unfairness still remain.
- Chinese units have an intentionally worse "turn rate" (they need more time to turn directions) so they feel "unresponsive" or "laggy".
- The campaign was heavily bugged (and still is) and does not connect the previous civs with the new one.
... so it makes a lot of sense to start from scratch.
The unnamed one is rumored to be the Aztecs which if that is the case that will be cool cause along with Quetzalcoatl we would also get as deities Xoloti the Aztec Canine God of War, and the Underworld and his sister the Jaguar Goddess of War, Storms, and the Night(Forgot her name) and some other deities along with possibly some cool myth units related to Mesoamerican mythology.
