- Pasco County, Florida jail reports about what happened when a corrections officer shot 29-year-old Matthew Trevino, who suffers from mental illness, are remarkably consistent with one another.
But they are not consistent with a video recorded by one of the officers.

They are supposedly overseen by the state in which they operate, but, I know a few corrections officers, and they've told me in detail how little training they actually get. Once a year to a range to barely qualify. Once a year to a self defense course to prove they're being trained in...something.

When somebody is annoyed with law enforcement they should be allowed to shoot them.
Even after the shot was fired, the officer can be seen clearly aiming his weapon directly at the victim preparing to fire again.
This should be considered attempted manslaughter due to the proximity of the weapon and the intent of the officer.

I used to be a Detention Deputy, and we had two isolation cells like this. We just looked in the window at the floor to make sure the drain in the floor still had all it's vent posts, just in case someone broke them off to use as a weapon (which has happened, not to me, but that's why they started counting the drain posts)
There was no need for this amount of force. Obviously you wouldn't do that alone, that's a huge safety risk, but with a few officers for back up, you could take care of this by just going in there, or you could just wait until they calm down, or wait for the nurse to come by to see if they snapped out of their episodes. Multiple options that would've been safer for everyone involved.

I’m a retired U.K. prison Officer and I can’t believe what I’ve just seen. It’s incomprehensible to me that these officers carry guns at all, but to see one used in a situation where it could NEVER be justified is beyond me. The guy was in his cell and he was no danger to anyone, so for this coward to put his gun through the flap and shoot him should result in an attempted murder charge.
Disregarding an officers lawful commands is a violation of jail/prison rules here in the US. They are allowed to use whatever force they deem is necessary

When I was in jail, I never looked at sheriff's as care takers... I think you need to rethink that.

I wonder where the officers thought Trevino was going or who they thought he was able to threaten from his cell. Looks like a good time to wait things out and maybe call a counselor trained to deal with such schizophrenic inmates.
I work in retail and work with cleaning supplies. If I use the wrong supplies or use it incorrectly I could get in major trouble. Jail is cruel and unusual punishment as it is. Imagine being put in jail for something a simple as driving infractions and having been thrust into such a violent environment from both guards and inmates. There needs to be alternatives, or at least eliminate the violence.
