I love how Rick gave us Annabeth so early in this book because he knew he was going to take her away real quick. Your point about Percy's growth in during the Mr. D scene is so spot on, and I love how it's reinforced in the climax of the story. Percy runs at Atlas because he wants to help in the best way he can, but quickly realizes that the most good he can do is get a goddess back in the fight. So our protagonist spends the majority of the final fight relegated to the sideline, which is a perfect subversion to use to make the point: sometimes the role you play isn't as grand as you might hope, but it's what you need to do. This book really does feel like the point where the series matures. On top of the deaths, there’s also both Annabeth and Percy HOLDING UP THE FREAKING DOME OF THE SKY, and having that hardship reflected in matching changes to their appearance. For a generation that is going grey prematurely just because of ordinary stress, that symbolism feels really impactful. It’s also probably the most significant “coming of age” moment for the two of them - until an event in the next series that I won’t mention in order to avoid spoiling it for those who haven’t read that far yet.
Hunters of Artemis don't just give up marriage. They give up any sort of romantic or sexual relationship. Arty and her lieutenants will look the other way for yuri/sapphic relationships if they are kept subtle and secret. Anything in the open or with a man, and the Hunter(s) get kicked out. And they don't age, but they can still die (as you learned). In fact a many of them do, since the Hunters hunt monsters and dangerous animals. A lot. Also, there are almost 20 more books. Idk i don’t have the heart to she loves and gets attached to what dynamics are used for characters and it’s precious and I don’t wanna catch her off guard too early
I hated the HOO cliffhangers sooo bad because I read all 5 PJO books in like 10 days. Having to wait every other year while he wrote the Kane Chronicles nearly broke me
The Titan’s Curse does have the most emotional ending with so many loose ends and so much sad stuff that happened. I do not normally need to immediately write Fanfiction after reading a book. I did for this one.
I will say this about Annabeths dad I feel like Poseidon helped prepare Sally for what was to come and how she could take care of Percy Meanwhile Athena was still having all the kids she wanted and probably dropped Annabeth on her dads doorstep with no word, except clearly he knew she was a halfblood, so he had no clue what to do.
And remember it's kind of implied that Sally might be able to see through the Mist somewhat, which could change how she understands and reacts to things.
8:05 she said 'I'm really into this Percy and Nico like big bro little bro relationship' and i was like, wait till heroes of olympus girl. Also im so happy ur reading the series,i love pjo. Im reading the sun and the star rn and its so good, u should definately read it
hold on lemme just- "Stars," she whispered. "I can see the stars again, my lady." A tear trickled down Artemis's cheek. "Yes, my brave one. They are beautiful tonight." "Stars," Zoe repeated. Her eyes fixed on the night sky. And she did not move again.
"Something about reading the Percy Jackson books brought reading back into my life" SO RELATABLE, I re-read the books last year for the first time since I was like 11-12 and I could not put them down. I read them one immediately after the other lol, it broke my reading slump
There is certainly more emotional devastation ahead, but the kind that makes you love the series even in the sad parts... Idk, I'm almost 30 and this series was more impactful to me as a young adult reader than Harry Potter was; and I grew up reading both at basically the same time. Rick has a unique way with words that makes the stories easy to read, but also carry an insane level of depth. The twists, turns, and characters are SO good. I'm finally getting around to finishing the trial of apollo and looping back to the new PJO book after in preparation for the one coming out this year. I sincerely hope the TV series gets to run the entire 5 book series. And if there's a pantheon out there with the power, having a spinoff Heroes of Olympus run of 5 seasons would be absolutely insane too. But i think the cast might outpace the stories. We'll need to see how it goes.
"Unless theres like a shocking twist where Poseidon is evil" Meanwhile, Percy and Poseidon: _"Percy"_ _"Hey"_ _We have deep conversations like that_ You know by now no doubt but Poseidon definitely isnt a Harry Potter DatDA teacher lol
Titan's Curse is my favorite book in the original series. Probably my favorite book overall, as while certain scenes and characters are very enjoyable in the other books, I feel Percy Jackson's first series is the best plotted and best written of anything Riordan has done in that universe. (I also really do like Magnus Chase.) I really enjoy your plot analyses, the way you break down development and choices. I know you're far ahead of this video and we could talk Luke's redemption arc or lack therof here, but I'd rather talk about that in your Book 5 video. I love the parental scoring system. I also like your point that a parent doesn't have to be trying to be bad to inflict damage on their kids/stepkids. My reaction to the introduction to the Chases was that memory is faulty and emotion can sometimes be much stronger than reason. I think yours is the more nuanced view, but I came from the perspective that even our heroes are not always right. Especially if they were *seven years old* at the time. To me it feels like Mrs. Chase might have had feelings about the dangerous monsters Annabeth attracted, especially when she'd had her own kids, who would have been babies or toddlers at the time. But she never even considered actually hating Annabeth or kicking her out and in fact meant to be good to her. To me, it felt like Annabeth attributed her parents' (dad and stepmom) stress raising her to an unwillingness to raise her. It's an understandable mistake for a very young child to make, especially if Mr. Chase doesn't hide his emotions well and Mrs. Chase is more logical than demonstrative and not particularly warm-both of which seem likely. I feel like Mrs. Chase was probably much more of a disciplinarian than Mr. Chase after Annabeth spent her first few years doing basically whatever she wanted, and Mr. Chase was grateful to her for doing what he couldn't or what never would have even occurred to him. Suddenly Annabeth had to clean her room and eat vegetables. She felt like she was being punished. In reality, she was just being parented. She felt like Mr. Chase was letting his new wife run all over her. In reality, he'd found a partner and was giving her authority in their house. Mrs. Chase is trying to do right by this incredibly smart, special little girl of her husband's, but this little girl is fighting her all the way because of course she is. Kids are scared of change, and before Mrs. Chase came on the scene, Annabeth was alone, the single child of her eccentric father who probably explored puzzles with her all the time and never noticed a mess, cared when or what they ate, or enforced any kind of bedtime. Now she has to split his attention with both Mrs. Chase and the new babies, and Mrs. Chase is nagging her all the time to follow rules. Her father is just allowing this. He even seems happy and relieved. Now, imagine Mrs. Chase makes cookies sometimes for Annabeth or buys her clean new clothes. Imagine she tells Annabeth she has pretty hair but not that she's clever. Imagine she never gives Annabeth a hug or tells her she's so happy she's around-or maybe that Annabeth never even gives her that chance (or a chance to feel that way. If Annabeth is always yelling at her and throwing tantrums, does Mrs. Chase even have a chance to love her, even if she's trying to?). She isn't able to express affection for Annabeth in a way that penetrates against the discipline and the resistance to change. What Annabeth hears instead is her stepmom's weariness. What she hears instead is her stepmom's fear when monsters are around her new babies (and she doesn't know yet that the monsters aren't as much of a threat to her kids). And her dad comforting her stepmom. It's easy to imagine that that might have been enough to inspire Annabeth to run, that she would have been clever enough to elude pursuit by her parents and stubborn enough not to go home, even when she met resistance, especially once she'd found Luke and Thalia, kids like HER. Of course, all this does is prove your point. From Annabeth's perspective, her parents were hurtful, unsympathetic, and struggling with her. From her perspective, she felt unwanted. She felt like a burden, like a danger to her half brothers, and emotionally abandoned by her father. But in the actual situation, it could have been a lot more complicated than that, and may not have been unhealthy or abusive at all. And even if the Chases should have done a better job of reassuring baby Annabeth, if Mr. Chase should have stepped up more to explain why he was backing up his wife and how their family was getting stronger, but they very much wanted her to still be part of it, if Mrs. Chase should have been more obviously affectionate, it's possible Annabeth was just plain wrong to judge them the way she did. It's possible her father loved her and her stepmom at the very least meant to or tried, and Annabeth inflicted a lot of hurt on them leaving too. Riordan doesn't go a lot into the perspective of adult characters in the series. But it's usually there in the background. I love the complexities just the one scene at the Chases present for the story and Annabeth's character and childhood. I also find it really personally relatable. I was the eldest kid of a single dad who had way more authority in the family than a kid my age usually had until my dad remarried. In the restructuring of our family, I fought my stepmom all the time. She bent over backwards to be a good parent to me, but I wouldn't let her be for years and years. There weren't new kids in my situation. And I stayed and adjusted instead of running. But I get misinterpreting a situation because of your own distress at a big change in your family. And I get how a good stepparent can be mistaken for a bad one because of the weariness they feel dealing with a strong-willed, resistant kid.
5 is more emotionally devastating, 4 is probably equivalent to this. I think 5 is the best book in the series and is one of the few series finales that elevates all of the other books along with it. The other books become better and rereading them is more meaningful and fun after you've read the last one.
One of the comments i saw in the books was that as the readers grew up, Rick's writing style and charaters grew up with them and as such allowed the older kids to still feel like they can relate to the characters while out of the demographics

@@brokklynmagician21 the first seres took me 5 days.
the riordanverse took me a month and a half to read, all together.
i want more. MORE!
@@brokklynmagician21 same for me….tho a lot of my friends don’t rly read books soooo….
You’re one of the dam fandom now. Also congrats on reading the best book or second best book in the series!
8:04 Whos gonna tell her? im not
not me
i was laughing hard for some reason watching her say that. smthing is wrong with my brain🤐
Nobody tell her😂😂
Nico rn: 🫥😀
Idk i don’t have the heart to she loves and gets attached to what dynamics are used for characters and it’s precious and I don’t wanna catch her off guard too early
"I hope there are no spiders in this corner" gives serious Athena cabin vibes
Always the third one in the Percy Jackson books (HOO and TOA included) are the best.
And the Magnus Chase books too.
And the most heartbreaking
I’ve never read anything more impactful than the final scene of Mark of Athena.
@@ericherde1
It definitely made me FALL more in love with the books.
I know I was reading ToA book 3 and I was really pissed off at the 3rd books. Everything terrible always happens in the 3rd books
"I hope anyone else don't die"
Book 5: HAHAHAHA wait for chapter 1
Uncle Rick can be ruthless...
I love how sally just immediately gets 1 million good parent points, she deserves it
the sirius-ron/percy-sea cow thing 😭
"not you, your rRrat"
you got me dead girl
I am predicting that at Mark of Athena you will start reading the House of Hades in the same video due to how bad the cliffhanger is
I hated the HOO cliffhangers sooo bad because I read all 5 PJO books in like 10 days. Having to wait every other year while he wrote the Kane Chronicles nearly broke me
The Titan’s Curse does have the most emotional ending with so many loose ends and so much sad stuff that happened. I do not normally need to immediately write Fanfiction after reading a book. I did for this one.
I will say this about Annabeths dad
I feel like Poseidon helped prepare Sally for what was to come and how she could take care of Percy
Meanwhile Athena was still having all the kids she wanted and probably dropped Annabeth on her dads doorstep with no word, except clearly he knew she was a halfblood, so he had no clue what to do.
Kinda curious where the evidence is for either of these
And remember it's kind of implied that Sally might be able to see through the Mist somewhat, which could change how she understands and reacts to things.
8:05 she said 'I'm really into this Percy and Nico like big bro little bro relationship' and i was like, wait till heroes of olympus girl. Also im so happy ur reading the series,i love pjo. Im reading the sun and the star rn and its so good, u should definately read it
Finally you released the dam video
Hero’s of Olympus. It’s the next series and I love them.
"I didn't know characters were gonna DIE in this series"
Just wait till she gets to ToA....
2:23 "Annabeth just fell of a cliff...suddenly this isn't funny anymore" my dear childdd you haven't spoken any more truer words (TT)
hold on lemme just-
"Stars," she whispered. "I can see the stars again, my lady."
A tear trickled down Artemis's cheek. "Yes, my brave one. They are beautiful tonight."
"Stars," Zoe repeated. Her eyes fixed on the night sky. And she did not move again.
no.
Why did you do that to me again
*inhale* WHY 😭
I didn’t know a kids series would make me cry this bad
@@ProphetElizabethDare ik!!! 😭

We all felt and said that when we read the words “Where’s my sister?”
I absolutely love pjo and now I’m almost done the first book of hoo. You will love it.
hoo i so good, i just read them for the first time!! amazing
“Protect this child at all costs” oh poor sweet innocent mikaila, have fun with the series.
percy and nico.
haha such a cute relationship. totally like siblings and nothing else ofc 👁️👁️
Shh, don't spoil😂
that’s why i left a huge gap.
"Something about reading the Percy Jackson books brought reading back into my life" SO RELATABLE, I re-read the books last year for the first time since I was like 11-12 and I could not put them down. I read them one immediately after the other lol, it broke my reading slump
Omg I literally was just wondering when we would get the next installment of this earlier today! So excited to watch!
seeing u read this and know nothing and be shook rlly shows me how much i had spoiled before i read them a few months ago
Percy dropping "pinecone face" on Thalia was so 💀
It was so dam funny 😭
Good for Mikaila for getting a therapist. She'll really need it for the next few series
"Unless theres like a shocking twist where Poseidon is evil"
Meanwhile, Percy and Poseidon:
_"Percy"_
_"Hey"_
_We have deep conversations like that_
You know by now no doubt but Poseidon definitely isnt a Harry Potter DatDA teacher lol
LUKE, STOP GIVING EVERYONE TRAUMA!!!!
Luke: how about no
17:57 "Why is this happening 2 seconds after a character died?"
Me: Because the rest need to cope.
Edit 2 seconds later: Yup.
Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase, Kane Chronicles, Trials of Apollo.
Don’t worry, you have plenty left!
The way i giggled when i was reading the Kane/Jackson crossover 😂😂
“Annabeth just fell off a cliff.” Hate it when she does that.
When she said R.I.P. Zoe I was like:
wait for it…
Wait for it…
THERE IT IS!
😂
I cannot wait until the scene after the blue plastic hairbrush
5:40
"RIP Nico, I'm off to be immortal" girl help-
Seeing Mikaila's reaction to Bianca's death is funny because that was LITERALLY me. Every part of it
I litrally reacted the sameeee for all of this but the “where is my sister” killed me😢😢😢 ur gonna love book 4&5 😂
Now i need her to read the other 2 series too... She had to make it through
exactly. i’m a n the first apolo book rn and excited for what’s to come
AH I LUV TRIALS OF APOLLO. except rhe fourth book🥴
@@Raccoon711 i suppose i shall see, still on book 1 haha
18:25 did she just guessed zoe's death💀
“Please don’t tell me it gets more emotionally devastating”…. Oh my sweet summer child
Annabeth loves falling off cliffs
“LUKE STOP GIVING EVERYONE TRAUMA!!!!” Made me dieee!!!!😂
25:27 This is when Nico goes on his hateful pathway then gets better then turns really strong

THE ✨DAM✨ SNACK BAR!!!
Titan's Curse is my favorite book in the original series. Probably my favorite book overall, as while certain scenes and characters are very enjoyable in the other books, I feel Percy Jackson's first series is the best plotted and best written of anything Riordan has done in that universe. (I also really do like Magnus Chase.)
I really enjoy your plot analyses, the way you break down development and choices.
I audibly screamed when I saw Nico for the fist time(I heard a few things about him) and I knew he was gonna be my fav character
Took a two month break from Pjo(cause I didn’t want to finish it too fast) and I just finished Blood of Olympus.
OMG! Ahhhhh, omg. Shursufabodi!!!!vaf ym *SI* ociN.😊won sgnilbis yllacisab era ociN dna anyeR
Bro, Octavian really said…. Well I don’t wanna spoil anything… 😅
So glad you loved this one (even if it meant suffering a bit - but that’s a right of passage at this point).
Also you met Nico!! My all-time fav character in the series (including HoO).
Honestly, this video felt like rereading the book for the first time and I hadn’t realised how much I missed it so thank you
"she didn't even think about it"
Mikaila not even 2 minutes ago: "WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE TO THINK ALL YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP IS MARRIAGE GURL BYE"
Titans curse is legit the best book in the entire series, Agreed?
Agreed
Agreed
AGREED ITS WHERE I MET NICO!!!!
Nah I think the last Olympian is better in MY opinion BUT I DO LOVE titans curse is my second fav
Percy Jackson series slays but Titans curse is where I met Neeks so its rlly special!!!
Mikaila denied the fact that Bianca died so much and that by the end she was going to come back like a few other characters in the series like Tyson or Sally, but by the end of the book, Bianca never came back!

Not to diss on Artemis that much (I mean, I’m not gonna ignore one of the only headcanoned aroace characters out there), BUT SHE’S SUCH A GROOMER WHEN WRITTEN IN THIS CONTEXT OH MY GO-
Edit: also, have you read the Narnia series, by C.S. Lewis? Just wondering.😐
Edit 2: 8:03
I visibly cringed when when she said she liked the “big bro+little bro” relationship developing between Percy and Nico.
thaila : becoming a hunter just before her 16 birthday avoiding the prophecy

I LOVE watching your reaction!😆 I just started rewatching the series as well. Can't wait for the 4th part!!!
Please take the time to record 4th and 5th part, I love these videos. It's like looking in a mirror 😅😅
pov I just finished blood of olympus and has seen Nico's character development
