The major weakness, is the crossover. It's a royal pain to work on, as the screws are behind the aluminum label. The crossover uses Mylar and electrolytic capacitors and they are a big limiting factor. I replaced mine with 1% metallized polypropylene and the difference is VERY pronounced. The speakers sounded more detailed, transparent and threw a larger soundstage. I also got rid of the vinyl covering and veneered in oak with a golden oak stain and semi gloss.

That was interesting! I have a pair of JBL L100's where the cabinets are very rough. The speakers are pretty good although I have a small buzz in one of the woofers. They may have the same woofers as yours but mine have a different tweeter and the tweeter is fitted higher in the cabinet. Replacement speakers for the L100 cost big money over here, especially in Canada as we'd probably have to buy them on eBay from the States, pay the exchange and shipping. Then you wonder if it is worth it.

      Hi BN!
It's cold here at the moment, but I suspect it's NOTHING compared to where you are! :-)
The JBL's, including these and your L100s, do indeed sound very good. I can see (hear) why they cost what they do. If I didn't have so much stuff, I'd keep these. It's a shame yours have developed a buzz. Maybe put them in the 'pending' pile and keep an eye out for a replacement driver?

I suspect they cost what they do because they were built in the USA and are getting rare to find .

I've long since sold these speakers so I don't exactly remember. But I do know if the woofers are made of card/something absorbent, I'm VERY careful to not get it wet. If the speakers are carbon fibre I CAREFULLY use wet cloth and detergent or similar. I might spot clean stubborn areas with something specialised but there's always the risk of discolouration.
