- WestJet mechanics walk off the job at the height of the Canada Day Long weekend. Afua Baah has the details as travellers scramble to find alternate options to get to their destination.
Cut the CEOs pay 95%
CEO and especially shareholders do none of the work but take all the profits, now thats greed 😅
@@geoffreykeating8172 Hey, it's the American way.
When airline goes well no one will worry about that, when trouble strike you just wish for one person that can shift the whole thing. If running a company is really that simple sure go ahead run your own. as long as union exist this will strike again next time.
@@QiuyuanChenRyan916 Skilled labor will always be unionized , and judging by your comment you will never be unionized and are probably a member of the " would you like fries with that " club 🤡
How about 100%? The people should rule the airline we know better than them.
By the way, CityNews needs sound engineers! even TikTok soccer moms get the sound right in their videos!
There is not only westjet in Canada, we can use the other
So much for Ford's "no picketing/protesting at airports... this is the second time since invocation.
As long as WestJet is on the ground, Canada is safer.
How so?
@@TacoMonster4eva - Think about it until tomorrow and get back to me...
Bro is not gonna be sleeping tonight. Lol
To think that under the previous West Jet leadership of Clive Beddoe, the company was one of the most admired, with dedicated employees, faithful customers, and a decent profitable company.
And now this, since acquired by Kestrel Bidco Inc, a cowered president that avoids answering questions truthfully, has made the employees looking to unionized, etc. all in the name of squeezing more money and cutting costs.
The only thing the AMEs want is salary comparable to what mechanics make in the USA and in Europe.
In Japan, when the buses strike, they keep the service running but it's free, that way it impacts the people up top only. They should do something similar here.
Flair is swooping in to help wja customers. Don't strike out.....fly with Flair Air!
Audio is only on R. This is not the first time CityNews failed to deliver sound on both L and R sides.
But feels a tad left sounding, no?
Might depend on your setup, but only getting one channel while other videos get both.
No mechanics? Boeing says no problem
WestJet MANAGEMENT seems to struggle getting deals done with their employee groups.
Then they pawn the issue over to binding arbitration, to do what they should have done.
audio is off
I remember when WestJet first came on the scene that they boasted employees were owners. I guess there was a huge abyss between how much the employees earned as returns and the CEO's. Which made a union necessary.
THANK YOU FOR PRESENTING THE WORKERS SIDE OF THE STORY! out here in Calgary, it’s ALLL about how WestJet management are outraged, and their stance of “how the evil and insulant union flagrantly disobeyed government orders, callously walking off the job, stranding thousands of poor travellers - like how could they?!”
This is not to demean any of the challenges and frustrations that
fare paying customers - regular people - have endured through these disruptions caused.
Thank you for presenting the union and workers side of the story.
They were offered industry leading salaries and benefits. Let the Canadians find there way. Deregulate Canadian airspace and watch things change in a hurry
They could have let the public know their intentions. They purposely allowed the public to believe they weren’t going to strike. Thousands of people travelled on Thursday and Friday because they believed this, and are now stranded. That was pure malice towards the Canadian public by the union.
how much do they make?
$150000
@@lonematrix
Citation? Because a quick search on glassdoor is revealing 87-93k CAD, which is quite paultry given the pay of simularly (or lesser) skilled professions like plumbers.
@@lonematrix That's what someone in the industry close to 30 years makes so imagine what someone starting out is making.
@@lonematrixAn experienced union AME makes between 40-50$/hr.

Y'all shot yourself in the foot for this Stunt...Travel Consumers will make sure your planes stay Permanently grounded / pilots unemployed.
Misleading headline, the mechanics didn't do this, not solely responsible, strike mandates and strike notice was supplied. The airlines unwillingness to negotiate made the strike inevitable.
Wrong. The union did have a new bargaining contract that they accepted. It’s the employees who said no because they’re GREEDY AF.
@@OfficialBigDaddyBC Yeah, it's the greedy employees, not the greedy CEOs and shareholders. The owners being greedy definitely doesn't track, especially in 2024. It's definitely employee greed. Defending billionaires your full time job?
@@kowalski5599 what does this have to do with others salaries. Let me shout this: THEY WERE OFFERED EXCELLENT SALARIES, SO GREAT THAT NO OTHER AIRLINE PAYS THOSE SALARIES AND THE UNION AGREED. THE WORKERS ARE GREEDY MF WHO SHOULD BE FIRED. THEN THEY’D HAVE NO JOB!
The union could have let the public know that they still intended to strike. They purposely let people think the strike wasn’t going to happen. It was done with pure malice towards regular people.
@@leslieb551 Should the union have called you at home? Maybe the airline could've notified those with booked flights of the strike notice and how it may affect the flights. The mechanics union is not going to have access to the flight manifests. Likewise, they are not the ones providing the service to the public, it's the airline, and if the airline had their ducks in order, instead of counting their money while they pit the passengers against the mechanics with the help of flagrant headlines like this video, you'd have been better off. Stop letting corporations tell you the little guy is greedy. Stop kissing the boots of corporations.
Surprised no one's screaming at picketing line.
Both sides turned their backs on Canadians.
I decided not to travel as president said it is absurd
Westjet was purchased by ONEX a private equity firm that trades on the stock exchange with a CEO and shareholders
I support the Mechanics
You are right, because they didn’t cancel your flight
that horsebul guy very proud of himsef
I am so glad I live on the border. I'm 51 years old and have only flown out of Canada once and it was a gong show. Run for the border folks!
I suggest you move across the border… no chaos in the USA when it comes to air travel.
Shut up and stay where you are…
Who needs chaos in air travel when you have the nonsense going on in Washington DC?
I'm trying.
@@FlightData101 You must be a Biden supporter. There is no chaos going on right now in DC. I suggest you look at Ottawa…
WestJet mechanics leaving people stranded, not a great way to make friends
Blame Shameless O Regone sticking his nose without understanding the law
Yal need to fix it or be sued for all the bs inconvenience caused twice on my trip! Fix it now! I need to get home tomorrow!!
Way to go!! Solidarity with our union members and workers
That is what happens when the federal representative is a former CTV host. No experience to deal with labor relations! He doesn't know how to get his hands dirty.
100% agreed with uinon say which also apply to City Bus, Seabus, metro train mechanic and city engineering staffs . :- )
this is why i book asian airlines because they have the best service and the newest aircrafts. european airlines are decent too. asian and emirates and other middle east airlines always the best. Airlines in north america are always not safe, old and bad service but still very expensive. This is a fact.
Time for Canada to deregulate air space and let American airlines fly between Canadian cities. Tired of being held hostage by Canadian compo
lol, no.
Sure, and give away more Canadian jobs? How about getting the government to ease back on all the stupidly high taxes they charge at airports, for so called access, security and navigation plus the BS carbon taxes on everything to move anything?
Another Win for Justinder Trudie government... NOT! 😂😂😂😂
Government does not interfere with an internal issue such as collective bargaining in a private company.
Air travel isn't really an essential service.
Perhaps you should send a letter to Management of Westjet and ask why they let negotiations fall apart.
Hire more people from India then west Jet never strikes again
Ew
Wow, am I glad I live in the USA… an airline strike down here is unheard of!

I don't see any Foreign workers or immigrants in that picket line up. haven't seen a single Pilipino or Indian on strike in my life, even though they work at McDonalds and hotels doing harder work. (Opps except for the reporter, good for her)
Well paying jobs are important. They drive the economy. There's a reason Filipinos and Indians come to Canada.

Ultra basic airfare - they only take you half way home, then go on strike. Never flying westjet again.
Me too.
The problem is management.
Truck drivers are unable to strike and get proper payments
Now paying very less in truck industry.
Only owners make more money

You are correct it is not difficult to find the correct information:
"In December 2019, WestJet Airlines was acquired by Kestrel Bidco Inc., a subsidiary of Onex Corporation. This acquisition resulted in WestJet transitioning from a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) under the symbol "WJA" to a private company."

Not willing to take the risk? Then do NOT book any flights. You know that strikes can happen and you know that unions will do so over busy days/seasons. I wouldn't be mad if WestJet shut down, people lost their jobs, and Air Canada prices went up. No one is entitled to flying - it's a luxury.

You clearly don’t know the first thing about this.
Yeah, you are missing the point that the MEC salaries in Canada are some of the worse in the world. The mechanics are just asking for equal pay for what is paid i
