I have loved the Ram Jam version since the 70's and heard the Spiderbait version back in the early 2000's here in Australia. I like both, both versions are great I reckon.
"Black Betty" was Ram Jam's only big hit in 1977. But it is one of the most fun & energetic songs. You really need to react to the video. It shows the guys hanging out in someone's back yard & jamming out. Love it! "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Not familiar with Spiderbait's version.
Spiderbait also have a female singer their bass player. They have a roughly 50/50 split of songs, especially their popular songs, but rarely, if ever do they sing together. Mastodon is another band with a drummer who sings, although again, they have 3 singers who all intertwine in individual songs with the occasional rare solo song for a single singer.
Singing drummers that come immediately to mind Phil Collins from Genesis (after Peter Gabriel left the band) and Karen Carpenter from The Carpenters. I prefer the Spiderbait version. Usually, I prefer the original unless the performer of the cover makes it their own (e.g. Joe Cocker on A Little Help from My Friends; and Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower). Although Spiderbait plays it pretty straight the production values make the Spiderbait version sound so much better.
So great to see you both. I really enjoyed both versions. Don’t recall it from the movie‘Without a Paddle’. Might have to watch again. I enjoy the song comparisons still. 🙏🙏 and both hang in there. 😊
Hey! Jeff is here!! Nice to see you young man, you have been missed. And a double treat, Sue is here also. Sue was correct a real toe tapper, times two. Lucky i was barefoot, I would have worn out my shoes. My feet will heal the shoes not so much. The cover was good I think. i was enthralled by the visuals. Whole lotta fun going on there I will have to relisten. Be well, listen to the docs. and Sue. Thank you as always ps Karen Carpenter sang and drums
Spiderbait did many covers, the other singer is a lady with a very sweet voice giving contrast. I also like the song Run from the Goodies TV show they covered but good luck finding original.
I am sorry for you man, I know you are going to go through a world of frustration and your good lady has to have a lot patience and a lot of support for what a cruel fate that you have been dealt.
This song is actually extremely old and was originally sang by black convicts it was first recorded in 1933 by musicologists they are kinda like archaeologists but for music it has been covered many many times over the years you can actually listen to the original recording here on UA-cam. On a side note that car for me is literally sex on wheels I love it
It’s ok to be biased!! I don’t know enough of Australian music to concur but I’ll check into it My daughter has been in Australia for almost 6 months I’ll ask her when she comes home!!
I prefer the original. The lead singer Myke Scavone played with The Doughboys and The Yardbirds. Currently a music teacher at a Long Island elementary school
Spiderbait is Australian, don’t know much more about them. Other drummer lead singers, abeit not the only lead singer, in addition to Genesis, Eagles mentioned already, include Gil Moore of Triumph, Levon Helm of The Band. Roger Taylor and Ringo sang lead on a few too, but none were the sole lead singer.
A decent song, but never a big favorite of mine. Not sure how you haven’t heard it since high school. Seems like it still gets plenty of playtime on classic rock stations and such. I hear it more than I need too. Think I may have seen the video of the cover somewhere, not sure where. Don’t remember the band, though. Glad to see you back. On the upside, when you don’t get something done that you were supposed to, you can pull the “don’t remember” card.
Wait. Someone with.younger eyes...is that beautiful black car a Cord!? (Excited stomach) The Eagles, Genesis (sorry only got that far b4 I got the murder mittens from cat)
Sue and I have been deep researching your condition to formulate a questions list for a specialist. Jeff, mind your bride... she got you healthcare today! Hey what happened to the HIM Wicked Game cover video? Did it clear?
Yeah he’s great!! His name is Leo Morrachiolli (?) I’ve done a few but the only one that comes to mind is Down Under Maybe I’ve done Don’t fear the Reaper, that one has his wife in it Thanks Ben!!
Spiderbait all the way! Brilliant live band seen them heaps over the years and not one hit wonders.
Aussie girl here, love the Spiderbait version, but maybe I’m biased.
Spiderbait for me .

Loads of people were introduced to that song due to that cheesy movie or Need For Speed Underground 2 game.
America invented Rock n Roll.
Australia perfected it.
I prefer the Spiderbait version (but I’m Australian so I’m biased).

Spiderbait version the guitars are nowhere near as funky. Nice version but nothing on Ram Jam.
Yes certainly not as funky but very respectful of the original
