Been collecting old commander sealed product. This is helpful! Lots of gems have been forgotten as the new-set pace quickened in recent years. Thank you!
One point of caution with Serene Master: any power/toughness modifying effects will continue to apply to the creatures’ new respective powers. So, the Master is very likely to die to anything with +1/+1 counters or Equipment or other modifiers since the opposing creature will still get those bonuses applied to its now 0 starting power.
@@jaredwonnacott9732 i think they know, but, even if you inherit the buffed stats, the opponents creature will go to 0 BASE, but the buffs they have will bump it back up to 0+buffs
@@Akario3 Oh, that's right. I didn't consider that it's power becomes 0, but then any permanent power modifications would reapply. Power and toughness switching is a last layer effect (and the last sub-layer of the last layer) so I was thinking of this as functionally the same, but swapping powers of different creatures is not the same thing, so the counters and equipments do indeed apply after the power swap.
Another interesting mechanical interaction with Thief of Blood is that she'll take Finality counters off your creatures, making it so they don't get exiled if they die. I use her with Tarian's Journal//The Tomb of Aclazotz with that in mind.
hilariously, she also takes away all counters from stuff like Millenium Callendar(someone dropped in on a friend last time...that calendar lost 560ish years that day lol)
Wolfcaller's Howl is definitely going in my Esika deck. The entire deck is built around getting people to draw absurd amounts of cards and end up decking themselves.
So glad Wolfcaller's Howl is getting some attention! I have it in my Bello, Bard of the Brambles deck and it is absolutely huge there. Can swing with it on my turn, but due to Bello's ability I often don't have a lot of creatures to block with (because I attack with enchantments/artifacts instead). Wolfcaller's Howl creates blockers for me as well as being a good body to swing with on my turn, such a fantastic card in the deck
i think imma get a couple of copies and try it in my chatterfang deck(3 wolves plus 3 squirrels?! WOWIE!) and my Jorn, God of Winter deck(which...is mostly goodstuff, but that 4 drop is important to be ALWAYS good, so that I untap with yorn for interaction, and i REALLY like slow incremental effects in that deck)
PSA that although Rite of the Raging Storm is considered a Goad-themed card, the tokens don’t actually have to attack. It’s definitely a strong card when everyone wants to throw hands, but if you are looking to close out the game or you are in an archenemy position it may not work how you would like it to. Great card, just a word of caution.
You might have wanted to mention the Thief of Blood interaction with Dark Depths. Thief of Blood Enters... you get a 20/20 Indestructible Flying creature. However, I hadn't thought of the relevancy of it having a base of 1/1. 'Grenzo, Dungeon Warden' will bring it out for 2 mana, even if he had no counter... but then steal Grenzo's +1/+1's if he has any (Not a bad thing if you can sac it and recast it)
A bigger weakness of serene master is when a creature has +1/+1 counters or the benefit of an anthem. It doesn’t take much to reach mutually assured destruction.
You know, usually I've looked at the cards you talk about in these videos, but...aside from Sandstone Oracle, and Rite of the Raging Storm, I don't think I've EVER run across ANY of these cards--even when just scrolling through scryfall for fun!
Im building that dimir Inquisitor Eisenhorn deck and i did keep the mirror box & mirror gallery, BUT I added the clue craterhoof Tanglekelp guy & cards like nadiers nightblade alongside the spellsplinger theme.
Impact Resonance would be great in that Stuffy Doll deck your patron has lol. Imagine blocking something big with Stuffy, then casting the Resonance.. hilarious.
One of my newest "rediscovered" cards is Tenured Inkcaster. I have it in a few decks, even in my Kambal, Profiteering Mayor deck, but I have a few cards like Aron, Benalia's Ruin, Felidar Retreat, and Basri's Solidarity in there because I'm getting so many creatures all the time, and end up having to use them as blockers against the original opponents creatures they copied. No point trading if I can pump them and keep them alive. That Tenured Inkcaster should see more play because so many token decks and so many +1/+1 counters have flooded the game lately. On that note, Phalanx Leader is also a card that works so well with tokens and +1/+1 counters if you're looking for a different card that kinda flies under the radar.
I feel like this card would get far more use had it been in Green or White. Excluding Drana, I would expect to see this mainly in an Orzhov deck. It feels rather niche for Black which tends to be more aristocrats or sacrifice as an archetype where it goes wide rather than counters.
@Dragon_Fyre Agreed, it would see more play in those colors specifically, but there are some Abzan commanders that this would work very well with as well.
@@tattooman3603 Abzan with some exceptions is often more combo oriented when playing counters. It has so many easy 2 card infinite combos or powerful synergies.
Serene master is the best card in my banding deck, tbh! Haven't seen some of these may have to pick up those sirens for my skeleton ship deck... They'd be amazing for forcing the creatures shrunken with it to attack. XD
I might try Widespread Panic in my Malfegor discard deck. I didn't consider this kind of hand destruction. I will keep track of how often my opponents search their library after turn 3. Maybe it's worth it.
I prefer Rise of the Dread Marn. It’s much harder to respond to X 2/2 zombies rather than an X/X creature. Spoils of Blood is only advantageous where a board wipe removes a lot of token creatures (and a token deck is going to be able to quickly chump block your non trample X/X). Liliana’s Standard Bearer is good too, where you draw X cards, but it requires you to be the one board wiping (ie. blasphemous edict).
Is it not the case that you can't be given crown of doom once someone else gets it? It specifically staes own, not control, as you own all cards that start in your deck.
It can be tricky to use effectively. You can only activate it during your turn (and it would not be advisable to just keep under your control until ready to use it), so you have to spend 5 to give your creatures +2/+0 versus one opponent (and it is triggered when attackers are declared, so you basically have to use it before you go to combat phase) and if you kill the player, it leaves play with them. That is alot of drawbacks. It may be useful in a deck with multiple combats (because then they would be +4/+0) though that feels rather win-more situational.
The problem with breaching leviathan is it is very slow. 1 - it takes forever to cast, and really there are just better ways to spend your 9 mana (I really would only ever play it in a deck that can ramp in green, and then there are better overrun creatures that cost less) 2 - if you're casting it, most times you will be tapping out to do it so you go shields down 3 - if somehow you cast it an make a big attack, then you have all survivors looking right at you and knowing you are the threat... they will do anything they can to get you, like board wipes spot removal etc. Even if all they can manage is a chump blocker, leviathan has no evasion so you're not getting in
It is ALL non-blue creatures (not just opponents). So as far as including green (you would want creatures with that ramp) or even artifact creatures, that is another problem worth noting. I hate how it includes the “cast from hand” text too, so you cannot even cast it from top of your library or from exile.
@@Dragon_Fyre The reason I mentioned green is the only deck I have that I'd consider putting it in is Aesi Sea Monsters, which has mostly blue / simic creatures but a powerful ramp package that can actually get you to 9 by turn 5 reliably. Unfortunately, there are dozens of better high mana sea monsters out there, so if I want to play a janky old high cost one, I'll go all out and play actual Leviathan for the nostalgia / memes.
Fountainport Bell is a really new card that everybody is sleeping on. I run it in 18 of my 23 decks. Yeah it's not flashy, but for mana fixing and deck consistency it simply can't be beat.
2 mana to draw a basic land seems really bad. Just play bounce lands, they are 1 mana “draw” a land. Thinking about it more, this card is literally evolving wilds that you pay in advance for. If you’re running evolving wilds, terramorphic expanse, escape tunnel, the cappena fetches, and fabled passage and you want more of that effect then fair enough.
@@webbc99 it acts as a re-draw early and late, no need to fetch the land it is a "may" and acts as a landdrop when u need it. but bouncelands are also very good
Yeah it's a may, so at worst it's a 2 mana draw a card. Most often I play it early as basically a land search (mana fix), then it becomes 1 mana draw a card. Then it turns Worldly/Mystical/Vampiric Tutor into Demonic Tutors.
@@webbc99comparing lands to artifacts is inherently non sequitur. It's more of a chromatic star effect where instead of a temporary mana, you get a basic land hand.
Rite of The Raging Storm is in a class of cards that I call “time buyers”. I have a Snapdax deck that really needs time and space to develop. So there’s a mix-bag of goad, pillow-fort, and political cards that allow for me to survive into the late game. I guess, I don’t think of cards like that as “good stuff”, because they facilitate a plan. They aren’t “synergistic”, but some game-plans can’t rely on synergy. 🤷🏻♂️
Its kinda funny that old commander precons have both a lot of insanely strong cards and at the same time complete, unplayable stinkers. I wonder if it was intentional or they genuinly didnt knew better.
This is my favorite series! I just picked up a [cultural exchange]. I put it in my Eluge, endless shore deck. Basically I can cast it for free switch everyone's game plan!!!
Wolfcallers howl is awesome and one of my favorites. Had it in my Kresh deck from the get go and it’s a must remove for my opponents by now 😂 theif of Blood is usually a KO in my Alesha deck since it comes out swinging
5:08 I also like that Rite of the Raging Storm can’t be abused by Sundial of the Infinite, as they are sacrificed at every end step. 😂 -- It also gets around Sogard’s, because the CREATURE has the ability.
i love rite of the raging storm, buuut its a bad card. its missing an important wording: "has to attack" or "goad". cause of that its easy to outdribble that card.

That would be nice but if you put it down people will stop attacking you unless they go wide
@@dariocampanella7992 That's why I would give it Flash, because it could come down to ambush something. And then it discourages attacks thereafter.
