This looks amazingly similar to the grapevine or "double fishermans" knot used for rappelling and mountain climbing.

It is the same knot. Just a double fishermans loop. Really and excellent knot for this application. In a single configuration/termination it's known as a scaffold knot. Great vid too.

This is great knot! But why is it called a "figure 8" when it isn't a true figure 8? Just go look up figure 8 and you'll find plenty of videos. This creates confusion in definitions. but it's not the first time and there are knots that have been given numerous alias names.
Why not a no slip uni knot? Should introduce that knot in one of these demonstrations
Eric I do the Non Slip Mono loop. Great loop for lighter line but it kicks off to the side on tarpon leaders. Stand by for a video showing the diference
Might as well just tie a spider hitch knot if you're gonna tie a knot like that. Perfection loop would be a much better choice
The Perfection loop is a knot that I tie in this series. It does not pull straight like the Double figure 8 with 50-60 lb fluoro. This is what I use...if you like the perfection loop, use that...it is a strong knot as well
