- The S160 is one of two Train Simulator add-ons that I bought in the 2020 Steam Halloween Sale; the other one being the General Electric U50.
The S160 is an American locomotive designed in World War 2 by Major J.W. Marsh. They were built in the United States between 1942 and 1945 for service in Europe, although many engines later ended up in Africa and Asia. A staggering 2,120 locomotives of this type were built, and at least 26 are still around today.
Today we will be having a look at the S160, and the specific member of the class we'll be driving is No. 5820 or 'Big Jim'. In real life this locomotive is preserved at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, though I'm not sure why she is nicknamed 'Big Jim'.
Anyway, for whatever reason I decided to use the old China Clay for Export route as the 'testing ground' for the S160. We start our run at Fowey/Carne Point, just after some fitters have finished servicing the locomotive. Then we will take her up the short 4.7 mile branch to Lostwithiel, pulling a rake of Mk2 coaches in British Rail colours.
Upon arrival at Lostwithiel, we will look at three of the international S160 variants (U.K, Poland and the Soviet Union, to be specific) before watching 5820 'Big Jim' depart for Bristol.
