Photography allows me to communicate slowly and reflectively with the world around me. When I take the picture, too much is happening around me outside of the frame and often the moment passes too quickly to absorb its full essence. But then, later, when I look at it on my screen with plenty of time and no disctractions, the essence surfaces. And my mind wanders freely around it, real or made-up stories evolve, giving even simple pictures a deeper meaning and context. At least, to me.....

There are just so many reasons. For me, it's the magic of it all, which goes back to the first time I saw a print develop in a darkroom and had me hooked on photography. I enjoy the technical aspects, yet also like getting away from the technical aspects. Same goes for editing, I enjoy it and hate it. I really like being able to capture an image, a moment in time, and have it for memories and to share. So hard to narrow down, but I know that when I've decided to quit (did this for several months a few years ago), or have thought about quitting (happens more often than I'm proud of), there is always that pull that brings me back.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I would agree that the first time I witnessed a print show itself in the darkroom it had me hooked as well.

Hi again! This was a very personal and deep video and I loved it :-) For me, taking photos is becoming a main interest for me in the recent years. That and traveling, I can say there’s a parallel… But is also more than that because I try to have always a camera with me, not just the smartphone:-) Why? Because so…
My professional activity is sports related, as PE teacher and as a European Handball Coach… Sports in general are art in movement and the aesthetic aspect of my game always meant a lot to me. Efficiency is decisive to get results but if you can do it beautifully, that get’s you hooked in sports and that is something you see everyday.
As a coach I developed the capacity to observe, to look and to be focused in the environment.
I think that I found those two things in taking photos… The aesthetic and the capacity to observe and this drives into photography… And makes want to learn and get better, that are also important aspects of sports activities:-) I think this are my “Why’s “ :-)
By the way I also watch that show and really enjoy. Have a great 2025!

Thanks for your continued support and kind comments. Funny, but I coached sports from tee-ball to high school varsity for many years and I never even considered that aspect of his helping me in photography, meaning the close attention to details. Something to consider. Good luck with 2025.

@@MichaelCantwell When you talked about certain technical aspects of photography I understood that as observation, analysis, be aware of what is happening around you. Those are Coach skills and if you see it like this, this may help as well in street photography🙂

Very good introspective look into what motivates and inspires photographing life and what ultimately becomes a Time Machine, Ted.

I got rid of cable TV and Netflix many many years ago, it was the best thing I have ever done. It will help clean up the cobwebs between the ears.

I would go further and I have done so with with myself. Why do you like the technical aspect of photography `per se' and not `cars' for instance. And why do you like giving people a memory? In the end of asking 'why' we can only conclude with, I think, `because I do, that's all.' But for me, that's the dead end I try to peer through rather than just accepting it. It can open can of worms mind you.

@@MichaelCantwell haha made my own brain hurt. The question took me down a long and winding road so be careful but I do actually find it fascinating. I learned a lot about myself and in the end it's always good. It p's a process so prunes out the dead wood so to speak. Keep up the good work. Duly subscribed

@@tonyhayes9827 Thanks, Tony. What you did to me is actually make me think on it and now all I can do is sing "It's a small world" over and over. Unless you have been to Disney that wont make any sense to you. Laughs.
