    I’ve had Nikon film SLR -> Nikon DSLR -> Nikon mirrorless. Staying in one system was most cost effective over decades. While watching some gear youtube videos is entertaining, I’m not that ‘influenced’ by that. Glad I ignored the Nikon-negativity a couple of years ago!

    Nikon was being wrong-footed by Sony. Sony was getting lots of traction because it was making headway in both improving their flawed cameras (every few months) and offering exciting specifications in seemingly super-talented small packages that set a high bar. Nikon had been solid and ever-present but not flashy as a gold standard pro brand. They couldn’t emulate the cheeky upstart by dropping improved iterations of current models every few months nor did they want to. The new Nikons have the excitement and technical chops without breaking Nikon’s traditions and keep the Nikon cachet. The marketing shows serious photographers doing serious work with Nikon tools and that’s a clever win for Nikon. They didn’t become Sony but they borrowed the idea of using UA-cam influencers to revive their market position.

      I have spoken about Pentax several times in previous videos. I started with a Pentax K1000 and spoke a few times about how that camera was a blessing in teaching me about the exposure triangle. What a great video! I'm on the coast of Massachusetts in early September, 2024, while you're wishing us Happy Holidays at the end of 2023. Isn't UA-cam wonderful. I'm a Nikon DSLR / Z6 shooter, with an occasional Lumix G9 tossed in for local color. At the risk of insulting you.....we're probably within a decade of each other. A lot of beach and grandchildren shots. Thanks for your input and non sales pitch presentation. I'm save this one.

    Like a lot of people my age, I started out with a Kodak Instmatic 126, which I upgraded to a Minolta Hi-Matic F in the early 70s. When I was ready to move to an SLR I bought a used Nikon FE from my uncle. Sadly, that was stolen before I even finished paying for it. After that I went with a Nikon F3 which I still have today. So when I retired and wanted to update to digital I was drawn to the Nikon Z series. I've had my Z50 for about 6 months now and am enjoying learning what it can do.

    Interesting Michael. I have shot with Nikon since 2009 and was desperate for them to enter the mirrorless market. Sticking with them through thick and thin, my patience eventually paid off. I love my Nikon Z8 and Z6III along with some really great lenses. I am so glad I stuck with Nikon.

      It's why I say just stick with your gut and don't always follow the herd. All the companies make really good camera bodies these days. For me, it was more, I knew once Nikon began putting effort into making lenses for the Z system, Nikon would be a winner in my mind. They always make good lenses even if at times they lag behind in the camera body department.

    I salute you, brother, I am happy to have gone with Nikon and stuck with them even though people are STILL trying to convince me that Nikon this and to try this and that, I'm loyal because I love what I get from their cameras and lenses, I don't really care what anyone shoots with, but all I know is, I am in love with the images I get from my gear, and don't care how "heavy" the ZF or Z8 or 85 1.2 or 50 1.2 may be, to each their own.... If you nit pick about anything, you will never be happy, and that nitpickiness can be really expensive lol... so yeah, there are not perfect cameras, but we should listen to our mind and heart and go with what we like, and not what others tell you to go with :) cheers!

    What a great video and true to heart. As much as I hate to say, I'm one such photographer who has sold his images at a discounted price mainly to friends and family. Over the past couple of years I have changed that philosophy. I don't sell near as much, but I don't do photography as a living, so any sales is like an unexpected gift. To all the photographers out there take it from a reliable source, he's right don't sell yourself short! If would like the name of the photographer you discussed in your video or maybe his website - Thanks.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I guess everyone has to determine what they think their work is worth, but I know when you feel like people are taking advantage of you, it's time to rethink your own worth. Years ago, I made the mistake of sending off several of my baseball prints to a "friend" and all I got in return was a comment of how they thought I would have sent more and larger prints. I think I sent more than 5 and didn't even charge for postage. It really opened my eyes. The site for the gallery is: iuriefineart.com/collections. I'm still looking for the name of the photographer again but its likely on that site.

    Dear Michael, my name is Nimrod Oren from Israel, and I am one of your 1000 followers. Maybe I didn't comment on all the great videos you uploaded but I saw them all and enjoyed the beautiful way that suited me so well because first of all I have the very same cameras and a large part of the lenses you presented to us. We both have a similar taste in choosing the locations and like you I also have 9 grandchildren in number and they are my models. Like you, I also travel the world, especially in interesting countries in the East, such as Vietnam, China, Japan, India, Thailand, many countries in Europe, the USA, etc. And every evening when I return to the hotel I continue until the wee hours of the night to edit them in Photoshop. I lived in Wellington Florida in 2007 2008 and before that in Boca Raton for over a year but unfortunately then I didn't take pictures like I do now. I would be very happy if you continue to produce more films and I promise to be one of those followers who will enjoy watching them. Take care dear man. Nimrod

    I shoot mainly circus and have a Z6 II with the 24-120 f4 as my lens. I was thinking of something with a bit more reach but can't quite push the button on the Tamron. Thanks for the video.

    • @MichaelCantwell
      @MichaelCantwell Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching. I'm not sure if I mentioned it in the video or not, however there is a difference in focus speed between the Tamron and the Nikon 24-120. The Nikon is faster at least when shooting birds. I would suspect it would be the same indoors for fast moving objects in a circus. Also, because the Tamron is not a constant F4 like the Nikon, be aware that you will lose one or more stops of light. Thanks again.

  • @Tamjam2011
    @Tamjam2011 Місяць тому

    Hey Mike and friends, Can shoot sports and wildlife with the Z7ii, but to be successful need to use manual and crank up the shutter speed. Also, use the dynamic focus, using the back button focus. Use the 200-500 mm lens, which is sharp in good light. Love the 24-120 s lens for a walk around. Likely will add the 100-400 s lens (maybe the 180-600 later down the rd). Also, down the road, would like to either add the Z8 or 9. Anyway, it is do-able with the Z7ii, but lots easier with those other faster camera bodies for sure 👍🏼 Nicely done vid ⭐️

    • @MichaelCantwell
      @MichaelCantwell Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I do agree, yes, you can photo birds with the Nikon Z7II with the 24-120. My issue was that I was using the older Nikon 80-200 F.2 F lens that has a very slow motor compared to the newer lenses. It took too long to focus. I had the same issue with the 24-200 in that the 24-120 does pick up focus faster. You combine that with the Z8 and it really improves trying to photograph sports and birds. Sometimes it's hard to quantify things in a short video, especially when I'm walking around without notes and only thoughts in my head. Since that's the way I write my novels (with mostly scenes in my head) I sometimes don't remember everything I want to say in the way I say it in the videos. With books, I can go back and edit and do rewrites :) But yes, you can use the Z7II for moving objects, but I do prefer the Z8. For landscapes, travel, portraits, there is little to no difference between the 2 cameras other than the size and weight.

    Largely based on your rave reviews of the Voigt 50mm APO Z lens I went ahead and preordered one this week, now that a new shipment (probably the last!) is coming to CameraQuest next week. I am slowly building a new system around the Nikon Zf for landscapes and general walking around, having come from the Nikon F3. For me, the tactile shooting experience is almost as important as the final image result, so I am especially keen to get beautifully made MF lenses with aperture rings for my new Z kit..Thanks for your enthusiastic, insightful comments and comparisons with other fine lenses for the Z system. It's so refreshing to get genuine, heart-felt impressions from an experienced photographer not trying to make a buck or curry favor with the big manufacturers. I enjoy your style and sharing your photo journey.

      Thanks very much for watching my videos and good luck with the Voit lens. I love that lens. I'm likely going to do another video about it in the near future while walking around town with it. I figure I should practice what I preach about my gear by using what I recommend in videos. I've always enjoyed the Voigtlander line of lenses. This is my 3rd one, first specifically for the Z mount. I've considered the 75mm, but I love the 85mm 1.8 Nikon. Since I use the 85 mostly around my grandkids, the AF on the 85mm comes in handy. I do feel the same with you in the one of my favorite parts using the Voigtlander lenses is the tactile shooting experience. I'm afraid too many photographers have moved away from understanding the benefits of enjoying the feeling of taking it all in before taking and or creating and image. Good luck with the lens. I hope it's what you are anticipating.

      @@MichaelCantwell Thanks a lot Michael. I'll look out for your next videos highlighting these awesome Voigt lenses. Now that Nikon has had such a great success wth the Zf, I really hope they will offer a "classic" line of lenses that have satisfying clicky aperture rings (like the vintage AI and AIs lenses), with much better build quality than the plasticky 28mm and 40mm muffin lenses, and still fairly compact and not too heavy. Or at least work out a license for Sigma to offer their lovely Contemporary line optimized for the Z system. But the Voigt lenses are wonderful and seemingly a perfect fit for the Zf. I'd love to see Cosina introduce a superb compact 28 mm lens (f/2?) optimized for the Z sensors. I'm also very surprised Cosina has discontinued the Z line of APO Lanthars (35mm and 50mm at least). The Nikon 1.8 S lenses are fine enough and have full AF with 5-axis IBIS vs, only 3-axis for the Voigt Z lenses), costing hundreds less, so I'm sure the great majority newcomers to the Z cameras will tend to buy these full-featured Nikon lenses. MF lenses are pretty intimidating and demanding for most, especially for moving subjects. Even you admit they require practice to focus well.

    • @MichaelCantwell
      @MichaelCantwell Місяць тому

      @@RBRowe7 Seems everything needs practice to improve :) I too hope that Cosina continues putting out Voigtlander lenses for the Z mount. My hunch tells me that they will eventually release an updated version of the 50 and 35 lenses. They were too good to discontinue. I'll be curious to see if they release a 125mm lens like they had for the F mount. It might depend on how well Nikon does with the 135mm Plena. I have no clue how they make decisions on what to release, but I would assume being able to make a profit is near the top of the list. I've debated on selling my Z7II and picking up a ZF but so far I've resisted. I use the Z8 the vast majority of the time, though I could see myself taking a ZF with one or two Voigtlander primes on a cruise vacation where you're mostly wandering around towns. I'd prefer the Z8 and the 24-120 and something else on a photo vacation. Thanks again for staying in touch.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. It's funny, for two days while I was trying to think about and create the video about Henry, he wanted no part of me. Then after I uploaded the video, he went right back to allowing me wander around and take images. I made one of my favorites of him (I assume Henry is a male, who knows) the next time I went looking for him. It was too late to include it in the video. I will say however that there is one fisherman, who is in Henry's territory, who Henry will allow to get close while fishing. I can also get close, but other than the two of us Henry is as skittish as the other 2 or 3 herons I see along the lake. They all have their own territories. When I say Henry will talk with me, he does squawk at me at times when I'm talking with him. He usually then squawks just before lift off to fly away but most of the herons do that, but not all. Anyway, thanks for checking in and your thoughts, much appreciated.

    Quite an inspirational story! I'm happy to learn how a bird and a camera brought so much photographic joy. I can totally relate. Prior to switching to mirrorless with the Z8 nine months ago, I was primarily a landscape and cityscape shooter with a bit of still life sprinkled in for good measure. Now? I'm a birder and it's all due to the Z8. I never attempted birds with my D810, but I'm so happy with the way I can now nail sharp eyes in birds. I was happy shooting landscapes, but now I'm able to push the limits to new genres. I've also started shooting astro for the first time ever, and it is so much fun. Honestly, the Z8 has been a huge inspiration for me. I just love shooting with it even more than using my beloved D810. And I haven't even started shooting video with it yet!

      Hey Marcus. Always good to hear from ya. Yeah, I just got back from following Henry around for about 30 minutes. He wasn't having much luck fishing and went and hid in some weeds to cool down. I found a younger heron about a mile away, but that bird didn't like me within 20 feet and flew off. He was a young bird from a nearby nest. I think. Henry needs to teach the young ones that I'm no harm to them. LOL. Glad to know you're shooting away though. I'm sure there a lot of photographers who feel inspired by the Z8. I still contend it doesn't make you a better photographer by its design. I think it makes you want to photograph more, get more keepers, which in turn inspires you to try hard and, in the end, that's what makes you a better photographer. People can argue back and forth about is it the gear, I guess I could argue both sides. However, in the end, you have to enjoy your photography, or the gear will only collect dust. You still must practice your craft to get better.

    What a wonderful frank, well grounded and explained video! Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights. I'm wondering what smallish sling bag(s) you would use for a trip to Europe, or general walk around landscapes, if you were to carry your Z7, Nikon 24-120 f/4, and maybe also the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO along? Now that I am past 65, i am trying to plan a new Z system and bag combo that would not weigh me down too much or be too bulky and would therefore be more likely to be used often, even for casual walks.

    • @MichaelCantwell

      Thanks for watching and commenting. That's a hard one for me to answer because when I usually travel it's me driving. I can take a backpack in the car and if I hike, I take the backpack. When on a cruise, I normally pick one lens and walk around with that and leave the rest on the ship. For Iceland, I had a car and took everything in the backpack. I do have one shoulder bag, but I don't often use it. I picked it up at Best Buy many years ago. I find at least for me, the backpacks are easier on the back if I'm taking more than one camera and lens. That's just me though. I know what you mean about not wanting to carry around a big kit, it's why I generally take one camera and lens when walking around a town if on a cruise and take a full backpack when I'm traveling in a car. Sorry I wasn't more help, but I rarely take a shoulder bag. I know they are popular with some people, but not me. Maybe some others can chime in and help you.

      HA. I think you've already qualified, Marcus! I like the Voigtlander a bit more than the Nikon, but it's a close call. Unless you use 50mm a lot then I'd stick with the Nikon. If you want that tad extra pop (separation between the subject and background) that you get with the Voigtlander, then try to find one before they are gone.

    I love the Voigtlander Z mount APO lenses. I feel very lucky to have all three. That 50mm just performs outstandingly well (from a technical perspective) while still having a beautiful character. And the 35mm is almost always in my bag when I travel. It’s not as razor sharp wide open as the 50mm (only slightly less so), but it has such a beautiful rendering that it just doesn’t matter. In fact, I struggled to wrap my head around the 35mm focal length for the longest time and with the Voigtlander APO everything just clicked; I suddenly “got it.” Anyway, I hope, as you suggest, this just means there are updated versions on the horizon. Beautiful prints, by the way! Cheers!

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I once owned the 58mm and the 40mm for the F mount. I sold them when I migrated to the mirrorless system and jumped all over the 50mm F2 as soon as it was made available. I never bought the 35 because I have always tended to shoot far more at 50mm then 35. I have the Nikon version of the 35mm, but I might sell it off and pick up a copy of the Voigtlander 15mm. I realize plenty of people know about the value of the Voigtlander lenses, however I still think they are one of the best kept secrets when it comes to excellent lenses. Thanks again.
