- So with ample opertunity to ride the fire road less travelled, I look to find new routes and dirt roads to sample. When I normally only ride foreroads to access single track, its easy to only ride the tracks that you know take you to a trail you want to descend. So why not broaden my horizons and fill in some of the gaps in my internal map.

nice you are exploring, I do that too, mapped all trails I rode on trailforks.
I will continue to explore areas I did not ride before, and explore further.
still some areas locally to me that are unknown to me apart from looking at maps, satellite imagery.
Thank goodness the bike didn't grow bars 🙉 Those kind of rides tend to be few and far apart. But it's really rewarding to widen your horizons, thanks for the push!

1.8miles from home and I’m in the country side. 2.5miles and I’m on a disused railway track. 12miles later I’m at the sea front, but chippy is shut. It’s good to get out
Thats not bad, I'm crazy lucky as I have the woodland in the video essentially in the next street from my house. I'm very grateful for that fact. 12 miles to the seafront aint bad either, bet the seagulls are getting thinner this summer!
This is pretty much what I've been doing, i use the cycle streets app as you can download the uk maps for free, so if you lose phone service, it still works, the maps show most offroad trails, its a great app for planning rides or ad hock GPS to get you home if you get lost
Apps like that are a great idea because you can really easily share your planned route with loved ones so they know where you'll be incase of an emergency.
Those are steps you should be doing with or without a lockdown. I'd also advise extra food and water, if you get a mehanical problem you'll need it as you might have to walk out of there, sometimes places like forestry roads are blocked off to traffic to stop caravaners, campervaners, and travellers from using the site.
totally agree that in "normal" times we should be providing expected return times and routes to someone at home. But how often do we say I'll be riding "Name of hill or woods". I know plenty of riders (myself included) who wont elaborate on what trails or expected route through those woods. My local hill has 20 - 30 wild dug singletrack trails and 80km+ of fire roads. Thats allot of hill to get lost in. So I probably should of said to be much more specific in terms of where your planning on going. And as always carry spares and tools so you can self rescue from a mechanical.
@@StravaigingMTB true but so many people get into trouble and nobody knows they even went out or what bit of a region they need to look.
I try and make a habit of sharing my location with my wife before I’m out. Even if cell service is out, GPS works.
Very true, I've noticed an increase in less experienced riders during lockdown as folk dust of bikes they never really rode. I'm mostly worries about this group as they might not have the tools and knowledge to self rescue with a mechanical.
You need to try some drop bars man.
But then I would be a gravel rider then.....🤣 that said I do like what Poisieden are doing for affordable gravel rigs.
I think you are a gravel rider, I think we all are gravel riders, cus we ride on gravel at some point.
I guess we are asphalt and road riders too.
but gravel bike rider, I am not, nor road bike rider.
I stick to my enduro bike, no matter what I ride, most rides will involve these surfaces, I won't have a helicopter drop a bike down for me to swap.😀
I am certianly riding "gravel" but I identify as a mountain biker as my cycling tribe. And when the world gets back to normal, rugged natural single track will be back on the agenda, but I still enjoy and always have, fast gravel roads.
