Gibson SG Shootout | Humbucker vs P-90 | 2002 Special Faded, 2013 Standard and 2019 Special

- A short video comparing three very different Gibson SGs
- 2002 Gibson SG Special Faded Worn Brown
- 2013 Gibson SG Standard (with mods)
- 2019 Gibson SG Special Inverness Green
This is not meant to be serious scientific comparison by any means - because two of the guitars are not entirely stock, and they are setup differently - I believe the green Special is fitted with .010 gauge strings while the others are running .009s and they are not exactly brand new strings either.
But it's still possible to evaluate the inherent differences - and similarities - between them
Ultimately I just thought it would be a fun video to make.
This is the shorter version of the video.
It's also good if you want a quicker A, B, C comparison.
The extended cut with more examples will be posted later.
The 2019 Special is stock
The 2013 Standard is fitted with 500k CTS audio taper volume pots. Pickups are SoloDallas Solo71 (bridge) and Manlius T-Top (neck).
The Faded still has the stock harness so the 300k volume pots account for the warmer sound of the guitar besides the pickups (Gibson 490R).

I'm becoming a P90 fan. Has really its own sort of rough sound. The 2013 is my favourite though. I just saw it has a Solo71 pickup, that might be the reason.
If I hadn't seen the video, I wouldn't have distinguished the P-90 and the humbuckers on the Standard
Can't get enough SG's.. I have a bunch myself.. 76 with T tops, 86 SG62 with Shaw pups, 2008 green metallic Robot (robot removed) with 498.. and a 2008 Diablo silver with ebony board and Pro buckers.. all sound and play differently but all in the same family.. awesome job
.. I love the special with bound board.. great color too.. crescent moons are great.. but your 2013 is still the best..
Nice collection!
Hard to pick between these three, each is unique
Hey
Could you do "nervous shakedown" guitar
lesson?
Thanks. All sound nice. The 2002 faded has the slightly nicer sound to my ear.
It def has a different vibe going on

Hmm, I actually liked the 2002 Special faded the most! What are those pickups?
490R pickups. Stock bridge would be a 490T but last owner ripped it out of the guitar. I could not find a proper 490T so I just grabbed another 490R and stuck it in there. It works
The 490T only has a wider spacing at 52mm between E to e but they are essentially the same pickup regarding output and A2 magnet.
Pots are still stock so I believe 300k volume and 500k tones, that is why it sounds a bit warmer probably
The modded standard wins for me. Are those pickups potted or no? I modded my LP Classic with unpotted Seymour Duncan Antiquities and it gives it a bit more edge/chime to my ears. Probably similar to Gibson’s unpotted Burstbuckers. That’s not to say that the potted Burstbuckers sound bad- they sound great too, but just a bit different- perhaps more warmth or a bit more muted.
The solo71 is potted I believe. The Manlius neck is actually unpotted.
Regardless of that, I think they are a good match together.
Normally Manlius makes their pups potted but I requested an unpotted set. Since then sets got mixed and matched at my guitar room... so this is the combination that somehow ended up in this guitar
Special feels more whistling than Special Faded which has rough sound. Standard sounds cool, like it has to sound
Yeah, agreed
