In Italy slow cooker are not a thing, my mum has been using a pressure cooker since forever and so I've been using it too and I really like it. You can cook a killer minestrone in 10 minutes, steam potatoes in 15 and they will taste like anything you've ever tasted if you're used to boil them in water. The most tender vegetables are almost too tricky if you wan't them to have still a bite, actually. Whole grains and dried legumes usually take 30 min instead of 1-1.5 hrs.
I got a pressure cooker a couple of months ago and it's amazing! During the cooler months I seriously use it everyday! I donated my crockpot recently because our pressure cooker has a slow cooker setting.
Oh, pressure cookers are lifesavers in any South Asian kitchen! You can absolutely cook beans in less than 10 minutes, if not 5, provided you soak them overnight first. But something like the orange lentils that I saw in your pantry cook in a matter of 2 to 3 minutes high heat!
As someone who has many food sensitivities, I really can't wait to see your updated grocery shopping video. It can be so challenging to shop without plastic when avoiding wheat.
I love that you are sharing your entire journey of moving away from plastic and transitioning to a zero-waste lifestyle. It gives me, and I am sure many others, hope. I am sort of in the transition, but I do not have a local bulk store, so I still have a lot of work to do. I am composting which saves me from tossing a lot of cardboard packaging and produce waste. So far, our trash has reduced by one kitchen tall trash bag full a week!
I only have a pressure cooker and it has been life changing! I can cook chickpeas, beans etc in 1 hour total without the need to soak them first! I now eat a lot more beans a lot more often as I don't have to think about hours and hours before dinner! I don't know exactly what a crockpot is used for as it really isn't common in Italy but I can assure you that a pressure cooker is 100% worth it!

I have an instant pot and I absolutely LOVE it! I actually need to sell or donate my crockpot now because I haven't touched it since I started using the pressure cooker. Beans cook soooo much faster and its great for grains too. Highly recommend!
The instant pot does have plastic parts and I have no idea what the life expectancy of them is. Hopefully a good long time. But, I bought mine before starting my zero waste journey so for all I know there could be a better zero waste option out there. 😊
Pressure cookers are a staple in brazilian kitchens (we eat beans everyday). They're great, but you still need about 30 minutes to cook beans and chickpeas after soaking for a few hours. I woudn't get rid of the other cooker and replace it with the pressure one because I think they serve different purposes.
Hi, Alli! I discovered your channel quite recently and really like your videos as I've been taking interest in zero waste, minimalism and purposeful and meaningful living. It's a long process and I'm probably nowhere near zero waste yet but I enjoy the process of learning very much. I just wanted to say that you come across as a very kind and thoughtful person who knows what she's doing. Please keep on doing what you're doing- it's lovely to see good values being spread around and shared so well. It's truly inspiring and uplifting. It inspires me to do more. Hugs!
I have the Instant pot and it's alright! The plastic seal got lose a few months after I got it and ended up ruining a bunch of food. But I definitely utilize it more in the colder months. Also this video gave me the push to clean out my kitchen and I now have lots of stuff to donate! I also love keeping my eye out for vintage cookware when I'm thrifting.
The small wood cars with the plates are just so adorable! And this video and the low waste fridge one are what my soul needed this morning. I'd love to see a video about bulk shopping! Thank you so much for your fantastic content! ❤
I’ve got an instant pot and it really is awesome, donated my crockpot, rice maker and some other extra pots that I stopped using thanks to the instant pot. Get one you will love it.
I have an electric tea kettle from Adagio it cost me $70 and I've used almost everyday for the last 9 years and it still works like it did when I first bought it. I love using glass jars for everything, but I see a lot of things you are doing which I'm going to adopt when we move into our house in 17 days :D.
is that the utilitea kettle? i have one from adagio and it's been great for all 4 years that i've owned it. adagio is really nice, their customer service is a person answering questions, and they sent me a new teapot lid for free even tho it was my own fault that it was broken. sometimes these kettles go out of stock but it's because they're the best and people must be buying them up.
I loveeee my InstantPot! It makes it SO easy to make dry beans from scratch in like an hour! I also love using it to make perfect "baked" potatoes/sweet potatoes. Also works perfect as a rice cooker and great for making soup! If you wait until Black Friday they usually go on sale half off, so I got mine for like $50! Best new purchase I have made in the past year!
Thanks for sharing. Love your vintage dirty towel bucket. You might want to separate your potatoes from your onions and garlic. The onions can make your potatoes go bad faster. I keep my potatoes in the pantry in a basket, and the onions and garlic in a basket on my counter by the cutting board ‘cause I use them a lot.
im in love with your kitchen, so tidy yet so vintage and cozy ! :) Love that you dont even have a trash can, I find it hard because my boyfriend doesnt like to live low waste, and he has some sort of packaged foods everyday...
Alli, you should look at the Instant pot instead of a traditional pressure cooker. It's a single appliance that does the job is seven appliances and tools. You can use it as a pressure cooker, rice cooker, slow cooker, steamer and even make yogurt.
I love how educational and encouraging these videos are. Your channel has been my intro to most of the non/little waste info I've heard. You seem so relaxed and approachable about this subject. :) I'll check your channel to see if you have the soap/cleaner recipes. :)
can you maybe do a video on how you cut up your old t-shirts for rags? :) I've been wanting to do it to a few shirts I have but not exactly sure how to do it lol!
could you do a video on regrouping veggies? I tried to regrow celery and it was going well for the first 2 weeks, than it died. I have no idea what I did wrong. anyway love this video!
Great video. I really want to learn more about healthy cookware. Your cast iron pan and enamel pot look so pretty. I have heard they can difficult to clean and care for though.
You should definitely get an electric pressure cooker! It has way more capabilities and can be used as a slow cooker. Plus I love that the liner is all stainless steel instead of a coated ceramic.
I've been wanting a spiralizer! Also, It's so reassuring to hear you aren't perfect either! I love how hard you try and you're such an inspiration! Our cupboard is starting to look more and more like yours and I'm v excited about it!
+Hannah Eleanor it's totally not about perfection, once I accepted that it made me feel so much better! ❤️ I have the inspiralizer and I love it, their Instagram is full of recipe inspiration too!
If you're still looking into getting a stovetop kettle i have one ive been looking into getting rid of. Its stainless steel with only a plastic handle. Ive probably used it only about 20 times before i moved and started using my inlaws electic one
i bought the instant pot pressure cooker and was able to give away the crock pots. There is a slow cooker feature on the pressure cooker and I can even make yogurt in that feature of the pressure cooker. Less appliances is a good thing.
I would love to see a gf zero waste grocery shop! I'm GF and I'm totally interested in zero/low waste but the bulk bins are a problem for sure!! Thanks! Simple Mills is amazing!!!! Not tried the pizza dough mix yet but everything is amazing! Yay for coconut aminos!
I love this longer video! :) I do try to reduce our waste but while in uni my last month before the end of the semester gets so busy that I'm happy to remember that I have to eat, but you motivated me again :D And finally I managed to contribute to your patreon site :) I hope you vlog more in the future, I really loved your camping trip video.
If you are looking into getting a pressure cooker, you should invest in the instant pot. you can get a 7 in one multi cooker. This will be used so much more than you would ever think!
Love your video! Your kitchen looks so nice, love the vintage vibe. Btw on amazon you can buy coconut oil in swing top glas jars. Perhaps this could be an option.
You never have to worry about a video being too long for us. You could hold my interest for hours. No such thing as TMI either. I'm sorry you have to deal with the wheat issue but you seem to take it in stride. Saw the frig jar... I would imagine they are more plentiful out here on the east coast. I have numerous of to the clear ones (pressed glass with fruit impressions on the lids) and they work well. Looking forward to the frig video or any video you make. Why no microwave and where did you find the chain cleaning thing for cast iron? 😀
Hi Allie! I would LOVE to have as little as you do'! I'm working on getting rid of stuff but it's hard!!! LOL. I just bought that exact coconut butter! Same brand and everything. I found it at grocery outlet for $5.99!!! They have quite a bit of organic stuff now!!! Love my cast iron pants too!!!! Pressure cookers do cook stuff very fast! My mom always used one when I was growing up and I used to be afraid it would explode, it was the old kind that you control how the pressure is released. I would say keep the crockpot though, you will use both and the pressure cooker can't do everything🌺🌺🌺
Can you talk about why you don't use a microwave? I see some other accounts through a little research, but would love to hear your understanding. Loved the video!
I'm also curious about this. My boyfriend and I just moved in together and we currently don't have a microwave. It's just easier for me to prep large meals and store in individual glass containers. We're both too lazy to dump the container into a pot to warm up and make more dishes. But we're debating if we actually need the microwave.
Girlonfire 2.0 actually due to the fast cooking time it keeps the nutrients, cooking food over longer periods (in the oven) makes them lose them. Boiling vegetables loses a load of nutrients unless you use the water in a soup. So microwaving would be the best way to cook followed by steaming. Frozen vegetables also hold more nutrients due to them not being in cold storage for long periods, they are frozen from fresh so lock in the good stuff.
My bff's father is a well-known professor of physics, who regularly travels to the collider in Switzerland and speaks at international symposiums. He refuses to use a microwave at home deeming it extremely dangerous for health... Whatever is written online about the microwave technology isn't precisely the science - it's what the industry wants us to believe. I can only assume you're not professors of physics, and get your information from online sources? Better safe than sorry then.
Have you tried DandiBlend? Its dandelion root coffee alternative. Omgosh its one of the best tasting alternatives! Also silicone baking pads instead of foil or parchment.
Such a great and informative video! I have been looking for dinner plates like yours with the raised side. Were they thrifted? If not, do you remember where they are from? Thank you!
amanda madea I don't know where she Alli got them but my mom had similar ones from Crate and Barrel. They were the Logan stacking collection if I remember correctly.
Love this video! I've been looking up bulkstores ever since you posted about it on Instagram! I'm interested in the oatmeal and parchment paper you use!
I would love to see a video about shopping zero waste with food sensitivities. I myself am celiac and have been having a hard time finding zero waste foods that are safe for me.
Absolutely! I'll make one soon. I've come to realize that I will make trash in the kitchen because of my food sensitivities, and that's ok. Buying food in bulk, while amazing, isn't the only way to be zero waste, there are so many other things we can do to make less trash too. :)
We should go back to the ways of the sixties and seventies paper bags for fruit veg, bread, biscuits, shopping bags. And glass bottles for fizzy drinks, juices, milk, and sauces technology didn't think of the negatives of the future waste
Your pantry is totally goals! I just posted a pantry video and while filming I realized we have been going out and buying bulk before using up our other foods (I have so many BAGS of beans! whyyyyyy!) I'm not sure if you can eat things like rice noodles but those and my Asian dry ingredients have been impossible for me to find in bulk- do you have any experience with that?
You don't need to scrub cast iron cookware. Lookup curing recipes online. If you cure it inbetween uses then it just wipes clean, no scrubbing. If you are looking into a new tea pot, my fav is a black cast iron one. It can be used on stove top, induction, and even a campfire and you really cant damage it. It'll last forever.
Get an Instant Pot it is a game changer...you won't regret it...I'm commenting way later than this video was made so hopefully you have one by now. Not sure you'll see this message now, but if you do...where did you get your 'metal' scrubber from that you use to clean your cast iron pan...I need something to replace my 'disposable' ones. Thank you.
Honest question of trying to understand better. In something like the B12, where you can't buy in bulk to refill, why does glass beat plastic if both are recyclable? Thanks!
Stephanie Smith Glas can be recycled as in melted and used for the exact same thing but plastic can only be downcycled, for example shred into tiny pieces and spun into fleece fabric. Also plastic dissolves into micro plastics which are digested by sea life and at some point even by ourselves. Or at least that's what I learned :)
mia knoll do you use mason jars? I use glass lunch container from Costco or just put it a smaller dish and put in the fridge and if I use it within days there is no smell
Nadie Komarova Thanks for the advice. 😌 I do use mason jars, but I want to start reusing my glass pickle, beats, pepperoncini and other jars that tend to have that lingering pickled scent.
Thanks for sharing, Alli! I lived this video! How do you keep your drawers tidy? After a few days mine look like the one you took a photo of before filming this video O.o
thanks for the kitchen inspiration! :) I was wondering if you have any recommendations for holistic doctors in socal? Ive actually been looking for one!
I love zero waste tours, too. So interesting and inspiring seeing how other people are making efforts towards a more earth-friendly lifestyle. I saw you have glass straws but it looks as though you're drinking from a plastic straw in your cup... is that because you're working through your plastic straws and wont be repurchasing or do you use both?
I attempted my first zero waste grocery shopping today, out of thirty-ish items I only had five in packaging. My question is, what do you use to buy grains in bulk? The quinoa fell through my mesh bags, so I was forced to use a plastic deli container (which I constantly reuse and then recycle).
I'm pretty sure she takes her jars directly to the store to top up quinoa and other grains! She did a video on it before, but she just mentioned doing an updated one soon if that helps :)
I'm a coeliac from the uk and was just wondering how you get around bulk stores and cross contamination of things like lentils and pulses during production? Most supermarkets put warnings on packaged pulses because they get processed near gluten grains.
+NobodyOfTheTardis absolutely! My natural grocery store has separate bins for beans and nuts which is primarily what I buy in bulk. Other items I either buy in glass, paper, or packaged in large quantities.
Hi Alli. Thanks for sharing your kitchen. If you have something beloved but broken, like that electric kettle, see if there is a Repair Cafe in your area. It is a volunteer group of repair coaches who gather monthly and will fix your item for free. #repaircafe
I do not think you can recycle those at all. Just saw your own bags, it will take 3 hours. The material cost me $4, and it will probably last 150 years, lady.
I use wide mouth mason jars with lids and rings and I just wash them y hand. The jars themselves I put in dishwasher. Avoid soaking the lids as that seems to be what caused many of mine to rust. Hop that works for you!
Isn‘t it more wasteful if you heat your water up on the stove? I mean it takes less energy i think if you just plug in the waterheater thing doesn‘ t it
You should check out the following channels: - The Parenting Junkie - Simpler Greener Mummy - Loganberry Home I think they're super great! Hope this helps.

Your kitchen is AWESOME ,I'm brand new to zero waste and researching info like a madwoman right now.so thank you for the HELPFUL TIPS

Those Pyrex bowls!! 😍 Love how you've made the most out of your small kitchen!

Lol I feel like I know your kitchen so well now! Love how many vintage/thrifted/recycled containers you use!
Love seeing how others pursue a zero/low waste lifestyle! Keep it up, Allie! Love your content so much.

Hi Alli. Thanks for sharing! I am trying to be zero waste since 2007. It's a challenge:). Love it!
A silicon mat is god sent. If you’re interested it’s a good alternative to parchment paper
If you're still looking into getting a stovetop kettle i have one ive been looking into getting rid of. Its stainless steel with only a plastic handle. Ive probably used it only about 20 times before i moved and started using my inlaws electic one

Hey I have an Instant Pot and it is a life saver or should I say a time saver!! You would love it. It cooks meals very fast. Love your video!!!
oooh looking forward to your next one on grocery shopping tips! XO
Can you talk about why you don't use a microwave? I see some other accounts through a little research, but would love to hear your understanding. Loved the video!
microwaves use radiation so essentially you are nuking all the nutrients out of your food so it defeats the puyif you are eating healthy
I'm also curious about this. My boyfriend and I just moved in together and we currently don't have a microwave. It's just easier for me to prep large meals and store in individual glass containers. We're both too lazy to dump the container into a pot to warm up and make more dishes. But we're debating if we actually need the microwave.
That is not scientifically accurate. Microwaves don't damage your food or anything like that.

Thumbs up to pressure cooker! It's also more sustainable because you will cook the beans quicker!

Thank you for the suggestion!
Love this video! I've been looking up bulkstores ever since you posted about it on Instagram! I'm interested in the oatmeal and parchment paper you use!
this was so motivating and inspiring! thank you for sharing ❣️
I have a Breville Slow Cooker and Pressure Cooker combo, could be a good option! 😊
I would recommend an instant pot it replaces a pressure cookers and crockpot
Can you make a video on how you use and clean your cast iron pan?
love love love this! I just made a video like this on my channel :) I'm moving next week and I can't wait to reorganize and set up my new kitchen!

I'm not sure if you can eat things like rice noodles but those and my Asian dry ingredients have been impossible for me to find in bulk- do you have any experience with that?
Thank you.
Love your videos and your kitchen!!! So many great tips!!!!
Do you have Hashimoto's, by chance? My best friend does and I would love to hear more about your health journey if you ever wanted to share.
Lotta Kannfastalles Thank you! That makes sense! Great explanation.
Your kitchen is so cute!!!
Where did you get the cast iron cleaner? I've heard of them but haven't seen one anywhere.🌺🌺🌺
You are minimalism goals!
Hi Alli! Was wondering where did you pitches the brown glass spray bottles?
How do you get the leftover scent out of your reused jars?
mia knoll do you use mason jars? I use glass lunch container from Costco or just put it a smaller dish and put in the fridge and if I use it within days there is no smell
Nadie Komarova Thanks for the advice. 😌 I do use mason jars, but I want to start reusing my glass pickle, beats, pepperoncini and other jars that tend to have that lingering pickled scent.
I soak mine in white vinegar and let dry in sunlight and there's no scent!
angrybutterfly I'll try that! I've been wondering too for old salsa/sauce jars!
If you shake some baking soda in your jars and let it soak in vinegar it totally clears the smell. This really helps with mystery thrift store jars :)
Thanks for sharing, Alli! I lived this video!
How do you keep your drawers tidy? After a few days mine look like the one you took a photo of before filming this video O.o
thanks for the kitchen inspiration! :)
I was wondering if you have any recommendations for holistic doctors in socal? Ive actually been looking for one!
I love zero waste tours, too. So interesting and inspiring seeing how other people are making efforts towards a more earth-friendly lifestyle. I saw you have glass straws but it looks as though you're drinking from a plastic straw in your cup... is that because you're working through your plastic straws and wont be repurchasing or do you use both?
Where did you get the pumps for the gallon and 1/2 gallon jugs under your sink?
I attempted my first zero waste grocery shopping today, out of thirty-ish items I only had five in packaging. My question is, what do you use to buy grains in bulk? The quinoa fell through my mesh bags, so I was forced to use a plastic deli container (which I constantly reuse and then recycle).
I'm pretty sure she takes her jars directly to the store to top up quinoa and other grains! She did a video on it before, but she just mentioned doing an updated one soon if that helps :)
if glass jars are really heavy to carry, you can get cotton produce bag to buy grains in bulk. Or if you have told tubberware, you can use those too.
Other items I either buy in glass, paper, or packaged in large quantities.
can you make a video about how to clean your veggies? dif ways
Hi Alli. Thanks for sharing your kitchen. If you have something beloved but broken, like that electric kettle, see if there is a Repair Cafe in your area. It is a volunteer group of repair coaches who gather monthly and will fix your item for free. #repaircafe
How do you compost living in an apartment? 🙂
Virginia Ritter In one of her other videos I think she said she keeps it in a bag in the freezer, and her city has a system where she can compost it 😊
What grocery store do you take your thin plastic bags to get recycled?
I do not think you can recycle those at all. Just saw your own bags, it will take 3 hours. The material cost me $4, and it will probably last 150 years, lady.
Walmart has plastic bag recycling bins now, and they accept any store bags, not just Walmart's
great setup
Hey Ali! How about bean pasta? Tdj has good one :)
+meow me I've had a few of those, they're really good!
I have never had a microwave either. Never needed one.
Can you make some cooking videos chia seed pudding sounds good

👍For the instant pot.
instapot supposedly is a pressure cooker and a crock pot
+deltaflute03 I've heard good things about the instapot :)
What is the brand of the spirulizer/zoodle machine you use?
+Lauren James it's the inspiralizer, it's so easy to use!
Inspirational!
Thanks for sharing , is very useful video for me
I'm glad you liked it!
I'm inspired :D
How do you prevent your jar lids from rusting??
I use wide mouth mason jars with lids and rings and I just wash them y hand. The jars themselves I put in dishwasher. Avoid soaking the lids as that seems to be what caused many of mine to rust. Hop that works for you!
Isn‘t it more wasteful if you heat your water up on the stove? I mean it takes less energy i think if you just plug in the waterheater thing doesn‘ t it
That kettle is prob a simple fix..have someone look at it ,ask around.
Inspiring!
You shouldn't keep the onions and potatoes on the same shelf right beside each other
why not, please tell me
Those jars could have been from a wedding
Are you guys thinking of having babies? I would love to see how you do zero waste with a little one
