Picasso's Blue Period

- Pablo Picasso's most famous period, his Blue Period, was both cathartic and life changing. It will give the young artist the emotional and artistic tools to eventually pioneer cubism and, eventually, revolutionize modern art. This video will showcase both The Old Guitarist and La Vie, two crucial paintings of the Blue Period, one for its fame and the other for its subject matter.

I was searching about Blue Period the one from the manga and ended up stumbling up to this video and I absolutely did not regret it. It will be nice too see your review about a manga called Blue period if you're interested;))
Same! The manga was so good that I was reminded of Picasso's Blue Period. I did not 'get' it while studying in university, I feel like art only grows more meaningful the more you experience in life.
Same lol. Reading the manga right now

I just bought the manga :)

A close friend attempting a horrific murder and then publicly committing suicide would definitely send someone into a "blue period". I had always assumed before that the name referred exclusively to the color, not knowing there was an inciting event itself that was so terrible and sad.
A known fact that was left out of this video is, that Picasso was fooling around with his friend's crush. The blue period was much triggered by Piccasso's remorse of betrayal to his deased "friend."
@@willyamezquita4404 WHOA
One inciting event?? I never took it that way. Picasso was a survivor. If anything, his friend's suicide was perhaps an alert that not everyone is on the same page of creative urgency to exist if for no other reason than to express experiences and seek untold ways to do this.
I clicked on this because I realized this era of Picasso's work is probably what influenced an anime/manga called Blue Period. It didn't click with me at first but it should have! The way Picasso transforms emotionally and artistically shows up a lot in the story of Yatora, the main character of the anime/manga. He discovers his love for art, and it helps him process the loneliness he felt-- His first painting is all in blue hues! Funniest part is how Yatora criticizes Picasso's work on the first episode.
Ah another man of culture with interest in culture

Yes!!! I did not know the title for Blue Period was derived from a Picasso painting. Now that I think about it , Picasso is a a major element in the overall theme in Blue Period.
Tnx for this video, made me found a new appreciation for one of my favorite manga series ever
@@YanosProductions nah wrong not🤓
one could argue it's quite an aggressive and misogynistic act to paint the woman his friend nearly killed (and for what - refusing his hand in marriage) in the embrace of her very attacker. she clearly did not love or want to be associated with his friend in any way and yet picasso still painted her with her attacker in a loving embrace, which of course is a fantasy. i gather he prioritized his feelings for his friend over the heinous act his friend committed. seems to be in line with picasso's view and treatment of women in general.
So glad to see someone pointing this out, Picasso was awfully misogynistic for that painting and very disrespectful to the victim
Exactly what I was thinking. Picasso was a great painter no doubt and could obviously paint whatever he wanted to but knowing the backstory that painting is gross.
it's so gross all i could say is ew
That's why he was the best! Friends first, 21st century moanings like yours later.

@@KevinMurphy01 Boring and low creativity name for a humanistic experience

There is beauty in simplicity
I was lucky enough to see some of the blue period art work in 2020 right before covid, it was soo powerful it made our guide weep infront of 40 teens and I can see why, it’s incredibly moving, raw.
Very well done. I was particularly impressed by the recognition of the subtlety of his doomed friend's hand gesture and it's translation. Bravo
I'm happy that the efforts I put in the video are noticed!
Thank you Peter!
@@TheCanvasArtHistory My pleasure. Any inclination to do a piece on Velasquez, Titian or Van Gogh? By the way, speaking of Vincent, I think you might enjoy exploring the connective tissue between El Greco and Van Gogh. Particularly the View of Toledo and Starry Night.
Some kind of cosmic thing there !
Very enjoyable as always. You talking about the circumstances surrounding the artist's life makes me think about what was going on in the lives of much earlier artists when they created their works, even if they were generally much less personal.
Yes! It's very interesting. Picasso's intense life circumstances made it pretty easy to link them to his art.
Art history is all about finding correlations between the artist's life and their work! We can just think of Frida Kahlo! I recommend the video by The Art Assignment titled The Myth of the Tortured Artist.
Picasso was like "You not loving my friend back led him to his death, and for that..i will immortalize you with paintings where you and him are lovey dovey"
Craziest part is Pablo was sleeping with her behind his back that’s why he was so depressed after his death and why painted him so much because he was remorseful
Definitely, "The blue room" is my favorite painting par excellence ✨
Also love The Blue Room
Pablo Picasso's progression in art kinda looks like when an artist gets dementia, and keeps trying to do art over time.
Not “trying”
that's what happened to him, Picasso had Alzheimers
he had dementia xd
you get dementia as a normal person and you're abandoned in some home, you get dementia as picasso and youre one of the greatest artists of all time 💀
Reminds me of that one artist that, near the end, was drawing what their paranoia basically felt like. But to them it was reality and fact. It's eery looking at the paintings and understanding that the artist felt as though people could read their thoughts, and how that translated into their art.
That is great, massive thank you from Moscow. I'm writing an essay about Picasso's Blue period in university and you really helped me.
Amazing! I'm happy the video helped! I hope you do great on your essay!
I just thought of the blue period the other day and i had an extreme urge to study it further
Thanks!
I'm happy your curiosity led to the video! I'm also happy you enjoyed it!!
I had the opportunity of Curating Picasso’s Blue Period to Summer School Programs and a few Case Western Reserve Art Major’s while interning at The Cleveland Museum of Arts. This was a 10/10 experience. I never knew the severity of Depression until I experienced it myself personally. When I look back on the experience of Curating Picasso’s Blue Period the Summer of 2009, I now relate to it so delicately and personally. I now vividly remember the images so profound and in 3D almost. Hearing that Pablo went through a period of Depression for 7 years is so heartbreaking. His Mental Health being illustrated in his work is so personal, yet beautiful. I appreciate this body of work in abundance now. It truly reflects what I personally went through. Anyone battling depression, please remember to seek help of some form and method. You are not alone and after all the rain, the Sun comes out again! :)
La Vie on display at the CMA was my first introduction to Picasso's Blue Period. (I was so lucky to grow up very close to such a world class art museum!) It's been one of my favorite paintings ever since then. Thank you for your lovely comment
This is fantastic. I’ve been keeping up with your channel for a while now and I can’t wait for you to grow and get the recognition you deserve. The editing, voice over, everything. Splendid!

As an artist I fall in love with color. Over and over, every color….I understand his Blue period.
Picasso in his self portrait reminds me of Pete Davidson, and I can't unsee it.
Exactly what I seeeeennnn!
"What if someone had asked Picasso not to be sad?

this video was really useful not only for understanding a bit more about Picasso but it also helped me with interpreting a manga about panting that I am reading called blue period (the manga in question is honestly one of the best I've ever read I highly recommend it)
Blue Period is an amazing manga
@@izkragutierrez7430 it really is :)
@@hannahettinger9088 great interpretation, the good thing about the name is that it gives many possible interpretations, for example, it might be foreshadowing for something later or it might be a subversion of the original meaning with "blue period" representing a happy period in Yatora's life when he starts to like panting, in this case, blue might be a color with a happy connotation considering Yatora associates it whit happy memories (blue Shibuya and all), I love how many possibilities there are.

What a beautiful walk through the Blue Period, learned yet unpretentious, sensitive and a reminder that art is created by human beings. This was my first look at this channel but I subscribed immediately. Bravo and thank you.
Aww, that hand gesture interpretation is heart breaking. Thank you for the wonderful videos always!
I stopped this video, and can scarcely utter the impact this brilliant Blue Period self portrait has tolled upon me this last half century...
Back to discussing the stylistic merit of Picasso's 'Blue Period'. All of the subjects in this period are complex and deeply moving, they seem to resonate deeply with those of us whom has lost a loved one. Your exegesis on the 'Old Man With Guitar', and 'The Life' are brilliant..I love your clever reference to Casagemas's hand gesture as 'noli me tangere'. Picasso's 'Blue Period' is simply my favorte of his many artistic incarnations.
That's a sad story, but that's inresting.
Thanks!
I love the blue period, it touches me in my heart ❤️

Love Picasso your Blue period was so informative and easy to watch Thank you Carolyn
its really interesting that this is 110 years old, and I'm going through that blue period. I've never felt so intense with the colour and the deep meaning behind it, like mostly everyone comments about the manga that I stumble across lead to this video
Amazing essay!
Thank you Vito! Your continuing support is super helpful
Amazing work as always!
Thank you!!
I'd like to read more about his art development in the blue period, what articles support all of these theories?
For me the last painting could be images of what Cassegama’s life could have been… it’s possibilities. He is shown as an infant; then he is shown in the bloom of the love he so wanted; then the two paintings are what he could never have because he was dead - the top, a long married couple caring for each other; and the bottom, him as an old man whose love has since died. I think this is a painting of his friend had he had the life he had wanted.

An artists style is simply what type of art they choose to create for awhile and it can change. It doesn't just happen for everyone either.
Picasso is known for his memorable cubism but he also had his famous blue period where his friends death and his own depression inspired him to create arts in monochromatic blue tones with a slightly more realistic look. This was before he even started painting cubism.
Life ebbs and flows changing us as people and in turn the art we make. Sometimes it's simply whatever we were into at the time
This is my favourite Picasso period. So many emotions and meanings within those blue paints. Although it has a sad background, I still prefer it over the other periods (not fond of the playful child-like artworks of Picasso's later life). My favourite is the Blue Room.
It was quite interesting, i lovet it , thank you sooo much for this beautiful expression

Picasso is art history on his own

i read the title and assumed picasso ovulated like royalty by some terrible misfortune.
This may be a stretch but, how expensive was color paint back then ?
Since you mentioned that Picasso was struggling with money and his paintings where his only form of income, maybe he wanted to paint with other colors but couldn’t since he had no money, sinking more into the blue period thus making poverty one of his themes in the blue period.
Also how you mentioned Van Gogh. Maybe this is unrelated but, wasn’t Van Gogh also struggling mentally but he was painting using vibrant colors on his paintings, again I have no knowledge about art or it’s process and maybe Picasso only used blue because it reflected his state of mind.
Loved it
Great video. Fascinating time in Picasso's life. I love the interpretation of Casagemas' hand in La Vie

Just want to ask what do you think about Picasso's relation with women , do you think we should divide the men ( Pablo Diego Jose ...) from the artist ( Picasso ) ?

I always enjoy and appreciate learning about art history but I genuinely feel sick at how picasso glorified his dead friend
The guy had mental issues. He was in love with a person as well. The combination of those two factors are never good. So please shut up the both of you.
Picasso painted in blue during this time because he was struggling economically and that's the only medium he could get.
It was used for the working class uniforms.
Tbf, this trivia also makes sense in greater scope. It could be fair to assume that besides the events discussed in this video, the fact that Picasso couldn't afford much colors besides blue might have made him in some way upset too.
Either way, thanks for sharing this trivia, i learned sth new today :)
Evolving .Growing pains. Finding expression through Van Goh and El Greco.

I could be completely wrong, but it looks to me like the mother and baby represent the disappointment or shame casagemas’s mother feels for the tragedy her son created while still wishing he was her baby boy. two things I noticed, the baby and area where the mothers heart would be are both clothed in a shade of white ( representing the purity she wishes her son still had) that is almost illuminated by the darkest shade of blue on the canvas which she is cloaked in.. almost as if she is affected most by the tragedy committed by her son. And two, if you notice the eyes.. the gaze gets slightly higher from left to right with the lowest being that of the lover, followed by casamegas almost in shame.. the mother is the only person looking someone directly in the eyes and it’s almost like a glare..( what have you done? How dare you take the baby I thought my son was away from me!) Lastly I believe the figures in the middle represent the way the couple truly feels on the inside, that even though they are together they feel alone deeply more saddened than they are letting on. The bottom figure is the same shade as the mothers robe and I believe these two things represent the darkest emotions of the painting. The inclusion of Nolie Me Tangere directly in the middle of all the subject matter represents how casamegas wanted everything to go away or rather “not cling to him” including his lady, those inner feelings, his mother, her disappointed glare and the way she wishes he was still her innocent child.. Ultimately, I believe LaVie is Picasso’s theory on what emotions led his dear friend to his untimely demise
It’s 2:54 am and I’m high
Please make the video about the manga/anime blue period it is beautiful
The thumbnail looks like sal from impractical jokers
u rock! thank u 🤠🪨💥
I believe the mother is a reference to his own mom. Considering the oddity of his friend embracing the woman, then the mother holding her child. She is looking at the couple, as the man looks at her. she isn't embracing her child. Maybe it's an assumption but his friendship and the relationship with his mother were coincided. as in he had shared personal details only to that friend, the friend looking directly at the mother while making that sign tells me there are multiple things connected. Also, think about why he omits a father and focuses on duos or being alone.
Just ideas with no knowledge
