For most of the series, Tau is suspicious of Mendoza and doesn't believe he is what he says he is. When Zia's father dies and the children are mourning, Mendoza is busy plotting a course to the City of Gold by the stars. Esteban, who to this point has never doubted Mendoza, lashes out at him and claims he is just as greedy as the other Spaniards. Tau intervenes and defends Mendoza, explaining to Esteban that Mendoza distracts himself to avoid grief, just as he had done so many years ago, alone on his island, and that he finally understands the navigator. It's a powerful little moment accentuated by this great tune.
I never knew my father, and he wasn't out there to find. I rooted so hard for Esteban to find his. Such a beautiful journey.

And better written than you'd ever believe for a children's show. Just staggering.
It also has Mendoza's memorable line "....death no longer upsets me"
@@redandblue323 You really have a heart of stone!
This is actually recorded on the music cue sheets with the title "Sad"
Ok. You've intrigued me. How do you know this? And did you happen to be a part of the old MCOG list on Yahoo Groups?
CLT very kindly sent me copies of them about 25 years ago - they're handwritten! And yes I was!
@@gregtaylor9198 sorry to sound stupid, but who is CLT? What was your handle back in the day on the groups? I was Corey Miller over there.
CLT in Luxembourg who partly funded the production with NHK. On the Goldlist I think I went by my own name!
